  • Until now, the study of eye refractive error examination for high school students are a few report that in Korea. In particular, there is few report about the visual power for same group during several years. We compared the study of refractive error done this year with that reported three years ago at the same high school. From the these data, the distribution of ammetropia was investigated. The study of refractive error for high school students was also compared with those reported before for the Adults and the middle school student. When the visual power is refered to spherical equivalent, the 36% of the whole students examined above had emmetropia and the other part of them fumed out to be ammetropia which is classify to 60.6% belonged to myopia and 4.4% belonged to hyperpia. The ratio of myopia for this year students is increased in comparision with the students in 1995. The ratio of emmetropia for this year students is 7.4% higher, and the ratio of myopia for this year students is 4% higher, but the ratio of hyperopia is very lower than that for the adults in 1997. In the kind of refractive error, it is classified that a simple myopia is shown to highest ratio as a 28.6% of 1212 eyes examined, a compound myopic astigmatism to the next high ratio as a 22.4%, a simple myopic astigmatism as 14.4%, a simple hyperopic astigmatism as 3.1%, a mixed astigmatism as a 1.7%, a simple astigmatism as 1.2%, a compound hyperopic astigmatism as 1.2%, respectively. The percentage of an astigmatism is a 76.7% of total eyes examined if Cyl-0.25 Dptr is included to an astigmatism. On the other hand, The percentage of an astigmatism is a 45.6% of total eyes examined if Cyl-0.25 Dptr is excluded to an astigmatism. In the kind of astigmatism, the number of students had an astigmatism with the rule is about 4.5 times than that of astigmatism against the rule. From the result of comparision the right eye with the left eye, the right eye of the students had more a myopic refractive error than the left eye, which is same as adults' case, there is no difference in a refractive error between the boy students and the girl students.

  • Many studies have reported that retinal defocus cause and increase refractive error specially myopia. Uncorrected astigmatism may be one factor of retinal defocus factors. To understand the relationship between myopia and astigmatism 62 college students were participated in this study. Spherical refractive error and astigmatism were measured using N-vision 5001 autorefractor (Shinnippon). Co-relations between spherical refractive error and astigmatism were high both in the with-the-rule astigmatism group(r=0.53; ANOVA F=32.40, N=87, P<0.05) and oblique astigmatism group (r=0.53ANOVA F=5.14, N=15, P<0.001). However it was very low (r=0.09; ANOVA F=0.18, N=22, P<0.001)in the against-the-rule stigmatism group. In the total group co-relation was also high (r=0.56: ANOVA F=77.80, N=173, P<0.001). Uncorrected astigmatism may cause and increase spherical refractive error.

  • This study was designed to demonstrate the ability of Texas Eye Research and Technology Center Dry Eye Questionaire (TERTC-DEQ) to examine the distribution of self-reported dry eye symptoms and their diurnal intensity in university students and compare it with McMonnies & Ho DEQ. Two dry eye questionnaires were administered to 46 contact lens wearers and 47 nonwearers. Contact lens wearers scored higher on the TERTC-DEQ (52.2%) than McMonnies & Ho DEQ (6.5%). Non-contact lens wearers also scored higher on the TERTC-DEQ (19.1%) than McMonnies & Ho DEQ (2.1%). Ocular symptoms worsened with progression of time of day in both groups of subjects. This study suggests that TERTC-DEQ provides a first-choice diagnosis tool to obtain a comprehensive assessment of patient's symptoms, especially in comparison with McMonnies & Ho DEQ. The TERTC-DEQ is an efficient screening survey and may be use in dry eye diagnosis of contact lens-related dry eye.

  • Purpose: The study was to analyze the correlation between kinetic visual acuity (KVA), visual acuity(static visual angle, SVA) and contrast sensitivity. Methods: Ninety-nine undergraduate students studying Ophthalmic Optics were fully corrected by the Topcon CV-3000 Phoropter. The contrast sensitivity was measured for the participants under the photopic condition ($100cd/m^2$) with Vector Vision CSV-1000E at 2.5 meter, while KVA was measured with KOWA AS-4A. The participants were classified into three groups L, M and H depending on the KVA (0.1~0.3, 0.31~0.6 and greater than 0.61, respectively) and were analyzed whether there was the correlation between the contrast sensitivity, visual acuity and refractive error. Results: The KVA was correlated with the contrast sensitivity for 3 cpd (r=0.26), for 6 cpd (r=0.48), for 12 cpd (r=0.38) and 18 cpd (r=0.47). Except for the low frequency of 3 cpd, they all were higher than the one of the SVA and the KVA (r = -0.37). The contrast sensitivity for 3, 6, 12 and 18 cpd was 59.41, 92.22, 38.41 and 14.39 in the group L, respectively. The contrast sensitivity in the group M was 66.03, 108.78, 53.51 and 19.20 and the one in the group H was 70.90, 146.10, 62.90 and 25.33 for 3, 6, 12 and 18 cpd, respectively. Conclusions: The correlation of the contrast sensitivity and the KVA was higher than the one of the contrast sensitivity and the SVA. It can be assumed that the contrast sensitivity will be high if the KVA is high, except for the case for low spatial frequency.
