  • Purpose: To understand the status and actual condition of clinical practice in ophthalmic optics and offer a effective operation plan and improvement of quality of clinical practice. Methods: The school survey were investigated from 30 ophthalmic optics school and student survey were investigated from 161 students among these 4 schools. Results: 'No specific program for clinical practice' were 60.7%. Most schools apply clinical practice to credit (96.4%) but naming of subject and credit were varied in each school. 'Communication skill' was most difficult task and 'cleaning and arrangement of frame and stuff' were major task to students during clinical practice. Best benefits through clinical practice was 'knowing real status of optical business'. Comparison in carrier preference, optical shop and spectacles/contact lens company were decreased and eye hospital and norelation work were increased after clinical practice. Conclusions: Wide study on effective operation plan for clinical practice in ophthalmic optics and on the improvement of students' satisfaction and close cooperation and interest were needed between schools and clinical practice places.

  • In this study, I developed a teaching-learning model using project learning model which makes the most of PIM(Peer & Instructor Mentoring), Presentation contest, and unification of courses on the field ophthalmic optics. There were several conclusion as followings;. The teaching-learning model considering the unification and organic connections among subjects was efficient to the students' academic achievement. Peer & instructor mentoring system was helpful for students to accomplish their own learning projects. Project learning model with collaboration was useful for the development of students' self-controled learning ability and communicative ability. Project learning model gave its driving force to the better motivation and to the goal achievement. Project learning model was instructive for building up the related theories and concepts on the students' major. In conclusion, project learning model mixed subjects with festival, can be a alternative teaching-learning model.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate students and optometrist opinion of the usefulness of different subjects of optometry curriculum. This date will then be used as base-line data during a process of curriculum development Methods: 292 of ophthalmic optic's students and 123 of optometrists were surveyed in the usefulness of curriculum (five-point scale) followed by statistical analysis of the results. Results: Optometrists gave a higher average score for curriculum usefulness (3.89) than the students (3.71). The subject which showed the highest usefulness for the student was optometry (4.55) but clinical practice was the highest for the optometrist (4.48). There was significant differences (p<.05) on optics, ophthalmology, basic science, optometrist related subject and foreign language but optometry and contact lenses showed high usefulness in common without significant difference. The usefulness of subject for the student showed significant difference according to gender, grade, age, and desired working place and has demonstrated significant difference depend on gender, age, scholarship, total working experience as an optometrist, workplace, and position for optometrists as well. Conclusions: It is necessary to continue research for the development of standard and bench-marked curriculum for ophthalmic optics and also the curriculum, which reflecting the usefulness and needs obtained from ophthalmic optics' students and optometrists need to be developed.

  • Purpose: We have studied the problems associated with increased number of ophthalmic optics students and its effects on the supply and demand of optician. Methods: We collected data from Education Statistics, a white paper of Minister for Health, Welfare and Family Affairs, academyinfo web site and University (College) web site. Results: We forecasted an estimate for supply and demand of optician using the entrance number of ophthalmic optics. Conclusions: The numbers of produced optician are in excessive supply. The excessive supply of optician can contribute towards worsening working conditions and lower job satisfaction of an optician. Therefore this can result infrequent turn over of jobs within the same field and migration into the different field of areas. To solve these problems, we will need to act with the manpower policy of government by gathering the voices of the related optician agencies. Then expansion of job domain, improvement of quality level, the improvement of the working conditions for optician can be accomplished by the unification of university system and reduction of entrance numbers for department of ophthalmic optics.

  • Purpose: The aims of this study are to conduct a fact-finding survey of eyeglasses use based on the visual acuity of middle and high school students in Busan. Methods: A total of 821 middle and high school students from four different schools participated by Self-administered qustionnaire test on July, 2007. Results: Among these students, 74.3% of the students had low vision and 66.26% of the students wore eyeglasses. The percentage of non glasses-wearers were 13.77% in low vision and 15.26% of the students had low vision in glasses-wearers. The reason why they did not wear eye glasses and why they did not change eyeglasses prescription was they did not feel any inconvenience in their usual life. Conclusions: Many students have bad eyesight due to limited spheres of environment and they do not feel any inconvenience of non-wearing eyeglasses in spire of their bad eyesight.

  • Testing of color vision by Ishihara's test was followed in 1306 healthy elementary school students from 8 to 13 years old. The number of color deficiency was 27(2.07%) patients who consisted in 25(3.8%) boys among 654(male) and 2(0.31%) girls among 652(female). The male' s patients were definitely more than female's. The type of color deficiency were consisted in 10(37%) patients of red-green anomaly, 7(26%) patients of anomalous trichromatism, 6(22%) patient of red-green anopia and 4(15%) patients who were difficult to classify. All of patients were normal binocular vision and visual acuity.

  • We have studied the problems associated with increasing number of ophthalmic optics students every year. The main problems are surplus supply of the optometrist and poor working condition. Thus all parties concerned who aim to solve the numerical unbalance of optometrist must have the common policy in sight. And we have to make a long-term plan and permanent organization for medical technician to establish supply and demand of medical technician with exact policy. To solve this unbalance of optometrist numbers, we have to establish an exact job category, reform the specialized education course, estimate the practical technique of national licensing examination for Korean optometrist, and innovate the contents and methods of reeducation.
