  • In this study we tried to give a decision on propriety of working conditions, to present ideas on reducing work loads, and to grope for efficiency of agricultural works. For this we examined the actual working conditions of cultivating welsh onion in the summer ground. And we improved harmful factors that affect farmer's health by considering results of previous study and farmer's subjective sensation. And we measured. compared, and analyzed the farmer's work loads before and after improvement. The results of this study are as follows ; 1. According to examine the actual working conditions of cultivating welsh onion in the summer ground, farmers have experienced physical and mental chronic fatigue on the basis of farmer's appel to eye - fatigue and sun - burned skin on hot working environment including excessive ultraviolet rays, the rough ground condition, inconsistent arrangement of working stand and sorter, heavy - weared habits, and unsuitable working posture. 2. When we improved harmful factors that affect farmer's health, conformed the effects on important work efficiency index such as heart rate, electromyovolume, body temperature, and microclimate inside clothing and work loads were decreased by eliminating the hillock and obstacles of ground, decreasing the clothing weight, using proper clothing appliances such as hat and sunglasses, controlling height of working stand and sorter suitably, improving the working postures and methods as using assistant appliances, alloting the working time and sequence effectively and presenting the light gymnastic exercises and rest for fatigue restoration.

  • Leaf blotch of Welsh onion was observed at a farmer's field at Kangnung in July 1990. Further collection o the diseased materials was made in 1993 and 1994. The symptom initially appeared as discolored spot and later yellowish blotch with the long axis parallel to the leaf veins, which turned to sooty colored concentric lesion due to heavy production of conidiophores and conidia. Cladosporium allii-cepae (Ranojevic) M. B. Ellis was repeatedly isolated from the leaf lesions. Healthy Welsh onion inoculated with conidial suspension of the fungus produced the typical symptom 10 days after inoculation. Koch's postulates were fulfilled by reisolation of the fungus. This is the first report of a Cladosporium leaf blotch of Welsh onion in Korea.

  • This study analyzed the effect of the farm's sense of community on participation satisfaction by participating in the contract cultivation of onions. To this end, we investigated the participation satisfaction with the sense of community's emotional connection, fulfillment of need, membership, and influence. According to the analysis of the sense of community of onion farmers, the definition of need, membership, and influenced participation satisfaction and were statistically significant. It was also shown to affect sense of community in the order of membership, Influence, fulfillment of need, and emotional connection. Therefore, it is necessary to form a continuous relationship with the leader and Nonghyup, to lead to improved farm income, induce pride as a member of participating farmers, and form a positive perception among onion farmers.

  • To devise better development plan, survey was conducted about current Farmer's irrigation Practice on upland in the Youngsan River Irrigation Project District IV. Major upland crops are garlic and onion in this region. Currently, upland irrigation is conducted using ground water. It is found that irrigation interval is $2{\sim}3$ day for dry-field rice and $3{\sim}7$ days for other crop, in general. Whole day is required to irrigate for many farmers due to lack of facilities and water source. Farmers have no intention to change staple crops even after completion of Irrigation Project of Youngsan River District IV.

  • The sclerotium rot of onion (Allium cepa L.) was occurred sporadically in the farmer's fields at Daehap, Changnyeong in Korea. The typical symptom was water-soaking on the bulb, stem and leaves and then rotting, wilting, blighting and the infected plants eventually were rotted and died. The sclerotia were globoid, 1-3 mm, and white to brown. The optimum temperature for mycelial growth and sclerotial formation on PDA was $30^{\circ}C$. The hyphal width was 4-9 ${\mu}m$. The typical clamp connections were observed in the hyphae of the fungus grown on PDA. On the basis of mycological characteristics, ITS rDNA sequence analysis, and pathogenicity, this fungus was identified as Sclerotium rolfsii Saccardo. To our knowledges, this is the first report of sclerotium rot on onion caused by S. rolfsii in Korea.

  • There is a growing need to understand how local, farm household, and elementary units are responding to changes in agricultural conditions due to increased internal and external agrarian conditions and increased uncertainty in agricultural management due to increasing FTA and climate change. Therefore, we analyze dynamics of changes through more detailed and precise gathering of information related to agricultural products and DB, and by analyzing the satisfaction level of the first year panel survey by constructing a producer panel for utilization in agricultural research and policy. A total of 500 farmers in the producer panel who mainly grow rice, garlic, onion, strawberry, apple were collected through questionnaires. The actual analysis used data from a total of 393 farm households, including 82 farms of rice, 51 farms of apple, 100 farms of garlic, 88 farms of onion and 72 farmhouses of strawberry. The distribution by age was similar to the distribution of rural ages in Korea, with 2.8% under 30s, 17.6% in 40s, 32.4% in 50s, 37.5% in 60s and 9.7% in 70s. Panel happiness and rural life satisfaction were examined using the 7 - point Likert scale and the analysis method was one - way ANOVA. The results showed that the happiness of garlic and strawberry cultivator was significantly higher than that of rice and onion cultivator. However, the satisfaction of rural life did not show any difference among the cultivars. As a result of difference verification about Agricultural Outlook and Crop-specific Outlook after 5 years, there was no difference between the crops in terms of prospects for Korean agriculture after five years, but a survey of industrial prospects for crops after five years showed that the rice growers have a significantly negative outlook compared to garlic, onion and strawberry growers, and garlic and onion growers have a more positive outlook than rice and apple growers As a result of verifying whether there is a difference in ages between the agricultural prospects and the industrial prospects by crops after 5 years, there was no difference between the ages of prospects for Korean agriculture after 5 years, However, in the survey on industrial prospects by crops after 5 years, 40s were more positive than 60s.

  • Survey on the status of cultivation and production of medicinal crop was studied on 18 medicinal herbs and 5 medicinal trees in 66 major crop producing complexes. Native seeds or seedlings of the crops obtained from self-seed or neighbored farmer were cultivated and organic fertilizer was preferred to chemical fertilizer in the complexes. More than 60.7% of farmers were applied compost among the organic fertilizers, while 34.8% of them cultivated without any organic fertilizers. Both of using the compound chemical fertilizers and urea and urea only used were showed 51. 5% and 40.9%, respectively. Ostericum koreanum, Angelica gigas, Phellopterus littoralis, and Bupleurum fulcatum belonging to the family Umbeliferae and Aralia continentalis, Polygonatum sibiricum and Eucommia ulmoides in the complexex were not damaged by insect pests and plant diseases. Mite, aphid, grub, cutworm, onion magot fly and european corn borer were known to as major insect pests and anthracnose, powdery mildew, brown leaf spot, leaf blight and root rot as major plant diseases. Productivity and income of a farm by medicinal crops in the complex were greatly different from seeding time, planting distance, year yielded, and selling routes even in the same cultivation method and in the same cultivated area.
