  • In this paper, the shock waves in compressible solids and liquids are simulated using a six-equation diffuse interface multiphase flow model that is extended to the Cochran and Chan equation of state. A pressure relaxation method based on a volume fraction function and a pressure-correction equation are newly implemented to the six-equation model. The developed code has been validated by a shock tube problem with liquid nitromethane and an impact problem of a copper plate on a solid explosive. In addition, a new problem, an impact of a copper plate on liquid nitromethane, has been solved. The present code well shows the wave structures in compressible solids and liquids without any numerical oscillations and overshoots. After the impact of a solid copper plate on liquid, two shock waves (one propagates into liquid and the other into solid) are generated and a material interface moves to the impacting direction. The computational results show that the shock velocity inside the liquid linearly increases with the impact velocity.

  • For one-dimensional two-phase flow without phase change and without axially-temporally rapid change of pressure, the interrelationship between the drift-flux model and the two-fluid model is studied. It is derived on the basis of the fact that the vapor conservation equation is related to the momentum equation by the drift flux. Starting from the two-fluid model, we obtain the interfacial friction expressed in terms of drift-flux parameter. Also, by deriving the void propagation equation, the drift-flux is shown to have jnterrelationship with forces in the two-fluid model.

  • A mathematical model has been developed for describing the oxygen concentration during the exponential growth of microorganisms, in a static solid substrate bed supported on a tray fermentor. The model equations comprise of one partial differential equation for mass transfer and an ordinary differential equation of growth. After nondimensionlisation, analytical solution tn the model has been obtained by the method of Laplace transforms. An expression for critical thickness of bed is deduced from the model equation. The significance of the model in the design of tray fermentors is discussed. The validity of the discussion is verified by taking an illustration from the literature.

  • To analyze the saline intrusion in the place, such as an estuary, the three-dimensional numerical model is developed. In this study, the advection terms of the governing equations are discretized by upwind scheme. By using an explicit scheme for the longitudinal direction and an implicit scheme for the vertical direction, the numerical model is free from the restriction of temporal step size caused by a relatively small grid ratio. The equation of state is used to consider the density, and the scalar transport equation for salinity is employed the third order TVD to scheme to prevent unphysical oscillation near discontinuity. In order to verify saline intrusion, the numerical model is conducted to compare the previous model in the lock exchange. The present model generally show a good agreement with the previous one.

  • In this study, a empirical equation which can be feasibly used to evaluate minimal track buckling strength without exact numerical analysis is presented. Parameter studies we carried out to investigate the effects of the individual factor on buckling strength. In order to simulate track buckling in the field as precisely as possible, a rigorous buckling model which accounts for all the important parameters is adopted. A empirical equation for prediction of minimal track buckling strength is derived by taking nonlinear regression of data which are obtained from numerical analyses. Its characteristics and applicability are investigated by comparing the results by the presented equation with the one by the equation which was presented in japan, and is frequently using in korea when designing track structure.

  • For a locus with two alleles (IA and IB), the frequencies of the alleles are represented by $$p=f(I^A)={\frac{2N_{AA}+N_{AB}}{2N}},\;q=f(I^B)={\frac{2N_{BB}+N_{AB}}{2N}}$$ where NAA, NAB and NBB are the numbers of IAIA, IAIB and IBIB respectively and N is the total number of populations. The frequencies of the genotypes expected are calculated by using p2, 2pq and q2. Choi defined the density and operator for the value of the frequency of one gene and found the adapted partial differential equation as a follow-up for the frequency of alleles and applied this adapted partial differential equation to several diploid model [1]. In this paper, we find adapted equations for the model for selection against recessive homozygotes and in case that the alley frequency changes after one generation of selection when there is no dominance. Also we consider the triploid model with three alleles IA, IB and i and determine whether six genotypes observed are in Hardy-Weinburg for equilibrium.

  • TCSC can not only increase power flow but also damp low frequency oscillation by controlling firing angles of thyristors. But, a model considering voltage, current firing angles is not derived. This paper used a small signal model considirng these variables which was derived in paper [1]. TCSC model is combined with swing equation. Being related to rotor angles and firing angles of thyristors, current and synchronizing torque coefficient is reformulated. Because firing angles of thyristors can be controlled only twice within one period, swing equation is transformed to discrete time model. It is shown that low frequency oscillation can be damped by controlling firing angles in one machine infinite bus power system.

  • We investigate the evolutionary dynamics and the phase transitions of the island model which consists of subdivided populations of individuals confined to two islands. In the island model, the population is subdivided so that migration acts to determine the evolutionary dynamics along with selection and genetic drift. The individuals are assumed to be haploid and to be one of two species, X or Y. They reproduce according to their fitness values, die at random, and migrate between the islands. The evolutionary dynamics of an individual based model is formulated in terms of a master equation and is approximated by using the diffusion method as the multidimensional Fokker-Planck equation (FPE) and the coupled non-linear stochastic differential equations (SDEs) with multiplicative noise. We analyze the infinite population limit to find the phase transitions from the monomorphic state of one type to the polymorphic state to the monomorphic state of the other type as we vary the ratio of the fitness values in two islands and complete the phase diagram of our island model.

  • A one-dimensional flood routing model was formulated to simulate the flood flow of drainage sub-canal using the continuity equation of paddy field and the momentum and continuity equation of drainage sub-canal. The model was applied for evaluating the hydraulic characteristics of drainage sub-canal at large-sized paddy fields. The model applicability was evaluated with field data and the simulated results were in good agreement with the observed data.

  • One of the main objectives of this study is to propose a realistic limit state model for reliability-based safety assessment of precast segmental prestressed concrete box girder bridges, considering 1) combined effects of bending, shear and torsional forces, and 2) the difference between transverse reinforcments of box girder. A improved limit state model is derived from a modified interaction equation compared with the Bruno's equation. A Drectional sampling algorithm is used for reliability analysis of the proposed model.
