In fresh water fish hatcheries and farms, Saprolegniales often cause serious mortality to the fish and their eggs. Malachite green is an effective antifungal agent, but is carcinogenic to fish and humans. Alternative antifungal agents are needed. Presently, we tested various concentrations of MBT-01108 (Opuntia ficus-indica extracts) alone and in combination with bronopol, formalin and sodium chloride (MBT-01108 mixture) on in vitro mycelial growth and in vivo remediation of adult eel, Anguilla japonica, infected with Saprolegnia sp. and fertilized eggs of chum salmon, Oncorhynchus keta, to evaluate the compounds' antifungal efficacy on eyed-egg and hatching rates. MBT-Oll08 mixtures incorporating bronopol and formalin at respective concentrations of 50 and 30 parts per million (ppm), and 100 and 20 ppm were most effective in controlling Saprolegnia in vitro and in vivo (P<0.05). Repeated daily exposures to 50 ppm and 100 ppm MBT-01108 were more effective than exposure every 2-3 days post-fertilization for the inhibition of Saprolegnia infection of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss eggs as compared with control (0 ppm).
At the present, fish farms are suffering a lot of economic losses due to infectious diseases caused by various pathogens including aeromonad. Aeromonad is ubiquitous bacteria that causes infectious diseases. At least 26 species in the genus Aeromonas have been reported to cause fatal infections not only in salmonid fishes, but also in other freshwater and seawater fishes. Molecular techniques based on nucleic acid sequences of 16S rDNA and housekeeping genes can be used to identify the Aeromonas species. In this study, The genus Aeromonas was isolated from salmonid fishes of sixteen fish farms in Gangwon-Do, Korea and phylogenetically identified based on the sequences of 16S rDNA and housekeeping genes for Aeromonad, i.e. RNA polymerase sigma factor ${\sigma}^{70}$ (rpoD) or DNA gyrase subunit B (gyrB). Consequently, 96 strains were collected from Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch), masou salmon (Oncorhynchus masou) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), and 36 isolates were identified as the genus Aeromonas by 16S rDNA analysis. Thirty six Aeromonad isolates were further analysed based on rpoD or gyrB gene sequences and found Aeromonas salmonicida (24 isolates), A. sobria (10 isolates), A. media (1 isolates) and A. popoffii (1 isolates), indicating that A. salmonicida is a main infectious bacteria in Salmonid fishes in Gangwon-Do. It was also proved that the phylogenetic identification of Aeromonas species based on the sequences of housekeeping gene is more precise than the 16S rDNA sequence.
Matured adults of chum salmon were collected from Namdae-chun River, Yangyand-gun, Kangwon-do, Korea in december of 1989 and 1990. Artificial insemination was made in the field. Hatching and neasing were cassied out in laboratories of the Yangyand Fisheries Institute and Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute : Ossification of bones of alevin, fry and smolt were investigated : 1. The newly hatched alevins, 1.80 to 2.56mm in total length, were ossified partly on parasphenoid, maxillary, dentary and opercle bones. 2. The alevin stage, the visceral bones connected with feeding and respiratory function were ossified earlier than cranium and vertebra. At swim up stage, the fry attained 3 to 4cm in total length, most of bones except cranium were ossified. 3. Teeth on the jaw bones, palatine, vomer, upper and lower pharyngeal bones were increased conspicuously when the body length were ranged from 3 to 4cm. 4. Caudal fin of hatched larvae had already seventeen occified rays and developed earlier than any other fins.

To clarify relationships between the abundance and biological characteristics of Pacific salmon Oncorhynchus spp., we analyzed spatiotemporal changes in fork length, body weight, and an index of relative abundance (catch per unit effort, CPUE) for pink salmon (O. gorbuscha), chum salmon (O. keta), and sockeye salmon (O. nerka) collected by research gill-nets from the T/V Oshoro-maru and the T/V Hokusei-maru of Hokkaido University in the North Pacific during 1953-2007. Populations of each species were distributed throughout the western Bering Sea, eastern Bering Sea (EB), western North Pacific (WNP), central North Pacific (CNP), eastern North Pacific (ENP), and Okhotsk Sea. Since 1970, the average body size of chum salmon at ocean ages 0.3-0.4 has generally declined in the WNP and CNP. However, the average body sizes of sockeye and pink salmon have not shown temporal changes. Chum salmon showed significant negative (positive) correlations between CPUE and body size for populations in CNP (ENP) at ocean ages 0.2-0.3 (age 0.1) for both sexes. In general, sockeye salmon also showed significant negative (positive) correlations between CPUE and body size for populations in the EB at ocean ages X.2-X.3 (age X.1) for both sexes, except in CNP at age 2. Our results suggest that better growth by chum and sockeye salmon in the early periods of their ocean life histories might produce higher abundance. This higher abundance, which might also be affected by overlapping distributions among Pacific salmon species and populations in certain seas, in turn appears to cause density-dependent declines in growth in the following ocean life history period due to the limited carrying capacity of the seas. To understand complex dynamics in Pacific salmon species in the North Pacific Ocean, research on interactions among species and populations is needed.
The present study estimated the variation of early survival of chum salmon families with respect to temperature and size after transfer to seawater. Heritability for seawater tolerance of half-sib families was also estimated at 45 days after hatching. Gametes were collected from 6 male and 18 female chum salmon to make 18 paternal half-sib families. Seawater tests were carried out at 3, 7 and $12^{\circ}C$ of $32\%$ seawater and compared with freshwater. Survival was significantly affected by seawater temperature. The highest seawater tolerance was obtained in 45-day old chum salmon at $7^{\circ}C$ seawater and the lowest seawater tolerance was obtained at $3^{\circ}C$. Overall survivals in seawater tolerance at $32\%$ varied among families. There were significant variance in fry survival among females (P=0.0001), and among males (P=0.0001). The heritabilities of survival in seawater in chum salmon were estimated to be 0.32-0.34 for the sire components at 45 days after hatching in 1998.
Chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) meat oil contained high amounts of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) compared to oils extracted from other tissues of the fish. EPA and DHA occupied more than 25% of the total fatty acids in chum salmon meat oil. The main lipid classes in the meat oil were triacylglycerides and phospholipids. The major fatty acids of the molecular species composition of phosphatidylcholine isolated from the meat oil were DHA and EPA. DHA and EPA were the major molecular species in the phosphatidylcholine of chum salmon meat oil, representing 44% and 17%, respectively.

Effects of extraction methods on reducing concentrations of pro-oxidants (total iron and protein) of salmon was determined. For development of the extraction process, the effectiveness of several extraction methods was determined and compared, including heat treatment (60, 80, and $100^{\circ}C$), ion exchange and carboxymethyl (CM)-cellulose column chromatography, and ultrafiltration (UF). Protein, total iron, and anserine contents of salmon extracts were 23.64 mg/mL, $16.20{\mu}g/mL$, and 5.47 mg/mL in non-heated extracts, 7.40 mg/mL, $2.32{\mu}g/mL$, and 5.20 mg/mL in heated extracts at $60^{\circ}C$, 7.64 mg/mL, $1.20{\mu}g/mL$, and 5.21 mg/mL at $80^{\circ}C$, and 7.04 mg/mL, $0.68{\mu}g/mL$, and 4.04 mg/mL at $100^{\circ}C$, respectively. Heating and UF decreased contents of protein and total iron, whereas only UF slightly decreased anserine content. Application of the primary ion exchange method increased the content of anserine up to 16%. Protein and total iron contents by the primary ion exchange method decreased by 70 and 98%, respectively. Secondary ion exchange (CM-cellulose) treatment after primary ion exchange and UF resulted in lower anserine content than the primary ion exchange method. However, the content of impurities (protein, total iron) was lower than in all other salmon extracts. Therefore, primary ion exchange, UF, and secondary ion exchange method were the best extraction processes in this study.

The relationship between North Pacific chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) population and climate variability was investigated in the North Pacific ecosystem. Time-series for the Aleutian Low Pressure, Southern Oscillation, Arctic Oscillation, and Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) indices dating back to 1950 are compared with the chum salmon catch using a cross-correlation function (CCF) and cumulative sum (CuSum) of anomalies. The results of CCF and CuSum analyses indicated that there was a major change in climate during the mid 1970s, and that the chum salmon population responded to this climate event with a time-lag. The PDO and chum salmon returns showed a highly significant correlation with a time-lag of 3 years, while the AOI with a time-lag of $6{\sim}7$ years. The favorable environments for fry chum salmon might cause better growth in the coastal areas, but higher growth rate during the early stage does not seem to be related to the improved return rate of spawning adults. Rather, growth in the Okhotsk Sea or the Bering Sea during immature stages has a significant correlation with return rate, which implies the size-related mortality process. The development of a local climate index is necessary to elucidate the effect of climate variability on the marine ecosystem around the Korean Peninsula.
Fish community structure and inhabit status of endangered fish species were investigated during April to November 2011 in Baebong Stream, Gangwon do, Korea. The number of fish species inhabiting the upper section (Stations 1~3, 5) was 14 and the stream bottoms were mostly composed of cobbles and boulders (Aa-type). Meanwhile, the number of fish species inhabiting the lower section (Stations 4, 6, 7) was 26 and the stream bottoms were mostly composed of pebbles, cobles and sand (Bb-type). A total of 26 species belonging to ten families were found in the stream during the survey period. The dominant and subdominant species were Rhynchocypris steindachneri (31.1%) and Squalidus multimaculatus (13.3%), respectively, and others such as Pungitius kaibarae (11.0%), Zacco koreanus (7.8%), Misgurnus anguillicaudatus (7.0%), Iksookimia pacifica (5.5%) and Z. platypus (5.3%) were followed in the order. Four species of Squalidus multimaculatus, Z. koreanus, I. pacifica and Liobagrus andersoni were endemic to Korea. And, Lethenteron japonica, L. reissneri, Pungitius sinensis and Cottus hangiongensis were endangered fish species in this stream. Oncorhynchus keta, L. japonica and Tribolodon hakonensis were anadromous species, and Plecoglossus altivelis was an amphidromous species. The similarity index based on species composition and abundance clearly divided the fish community structure of the Baebong Stream into two sections fragmented by a weir installed into the stream. It is necessary to install a fish ways on the weirs for a fish migration and movements.
