Equalization Digital On-Channel Repeater Part 2 : Field Test Results (등화형 디지털 동일 채널 중계기 Part 2 : 필드 테스트 결과)

  • This paper presents and analyzes field test results of Equalization Digital On-Channel Repeater (EDOCR) using ATSC(Advanced Television Systems Committee) terrestrial digital TV broadcasting system. In the field test, according to EDOCR On/Off, types of antennas and receivers we measured reception possibility, C/N(Carrier to Noise Ratio), reception power, noise and input margin at each test point. By the field test results, the reception rate of the receiver manufactured in 2004 was $33\%$ when EDOCR is off and directional antenna is used. However, the reception rate was $100\%$ when EDOCR is on. In addition, the noise margin, which determines reception quality was increased at least 6 dB, so that it is capable of constructing SFN(Single Frequency Network) using the EDOCR.

Integrated Photonic Channel Selective Microwave Bandpass Filter Incorporating a 1×2 Switch Based on Tunable Polymeric Ring Resonators (폴리머 링 공진기 기반의 스위치를 이용한 집적광학 채널 선택 마이크로웨이브 대역통과 필터)

  • A reconfigurable photonic microwave (MW) channel selective filter was demonstrated incorporating a $1{\times}2$ switch based on two tunable polymeric resonators with different free spectral ranges. Each resonator, consisting of two cascaded rings with an electrode formed on one of them, plays a role as an on/off switch through the thermooptic effect. The optical signal carrying the MW signal is routed to either port of the switch and detected to show the filtered output at the frequency determined by the free spectral range of the corresponding resonator. When the channel centered at 10 GHz was chosen, the extinction ratio was ${\sim}30dB$, the bandwidth 1 GHz, and the electrical power consumption 4.1 mW. For the other channel located at 20 GHz, we have achieved the extinction ratio of ${\sim}30dB$, the bandwidth of 2 GHz, and the required power of 8.0 mW. Finally the crosstalk between the selected and blocked channels was higher than 24 dB.

Risk Factors of On-Pump Conversion during Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass Graft

  • Background: Off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCABG) procedures can avoid the complications of an on-pump bypass. However, some cases unexpectedly require conversion to cardiopulmonary bypass during OPCABG. The risk factors associated with a sudden need for cardiopulmonary bypass were analyzed. Methods: This retrospective study included 283 subjects scheduled for OPCABG from 2001 to 2010. These were divided into an OPCABG group and an on-pump conversion group. Preoperative, operative, and postoperative variables were compared between the 2 groups. Results: Of the 283 patients scheduled for OPCABG, 47 (16%) were switched to on-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). The mortality of the both the OPCABG and on-pump conversion groups was not significantly different. The major risk factors for conversion to on-pump CABG were congestive heart failure (CHF) (odds ratio [OR], 3.5; p=0.029), ejection fraction (EF) <35% (OR, 4.4; p=0.012), and preoperative beta-blocker (BB) administration (OR, 0.3; p=0.007). The use of intraoperative (p=0.007) and postoperative (p=0.021) inotropics was significantly higher in the conversion group. The amount of postoperative drainage (p<0.001) and transfusion (p<0.001) also was significantly higher in the conversion group. There were no significant differences in stroke or cardiovascular complications between the groups over the course of short-term and long-term follow-up. Conclusion: Patients who undergo OPCABG and have CHF or a lower EF (<35%) are more likely to undergo on-pump conversion, while preoperative BB administration could help prevent conversions from OPCABG to on-pump CABG.

Effect of Digital Noise Reduction of Hearing Aids on Music and Speech Perception

  • Background and Objectives: Although many studies have evaluated the effect of the digital noise reduction (DNR) algorithm of hearing aids (HAs) on speech recognition, there are few studies on the effect of DNR on music perception. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the effect of DNR on music, in addition to speech perception, using objective and subjective measurements. Subjects and Methods: Sixteen HA users participated in this study (58.00±10.44 years; 3 males and 13 females). The objective assessment of speech and music perception was based on the Korean version of the Clinical Assessment of Music Perception test and word and sentence recognition scores. Meanwhile, for the subjective assessment, the quality rating of speech and music as well as self-reported HA benefits were evaluated. Results: There was no improvement conferred with DNR of HAs on the objective assessment tests of speech and music perception. The pitch discrimination at 262 Hz in the DNR-off condition was better than that in the unaided condition (p=0.024); however, the unaided condition and the DNR-on conditions did not differ. In the Korean music background questionnaire, responses regarding ease of communication were better in the DNR-on condition than in the DNR-off condition (p=0.029). Conclusions: Speech and music perception or sound quality did not improve with the activation of DNR. However, DNR positively influenced the listener's subjective listening comfort. The DNR-off condition in HAs may be beneficial for pitch discrimination at some frequencies.

Fabrication of thin Film Transistor on Plastic Substrate for Application to Flexible Display (Flexible 디스플레이로의 응용을 위한 플라스틱 기판 위의 박막트랜지스터의 제조)

  • Amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) based TFT process has been studied at the maximum temperature of 15$0^{\circ}C$ with 25${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ thick flexible and adhesive tape type polyimide foil substrate, which has benefit on handling a rugged, flexible plastic substrate trough sticking simply it to glass. This paper summarize the process procedure of the TFT on the plastic substrate and shows its electrical characteristics in comparison with glass substrate using primarily the ON/OFF current ratio and the field effect mobility as the quality criterion. The a-SiN:H coating layer played an important role in decreasing surface roughness of plastic substrate, so leakage current of TFT was decreased and mobility was increased. The results show that high quality a-Si:H TFTs can be fabricated on the plastic substrates through coating a rough plastic surface with a-SiN:H.

Estimation and Prediction-Based Connection Admission Control in Broadband Satellite Systems

  • We apply a "sliding-window" Maximum Likelihood(ML) estimator to estimate traffic parameters On-Off source and develop a method for estimating stochastic predicted individual cell arrival rates. Based on these results, we propose a simple Connection Admission Control(CAC)scheme for delay sensitive services in broadband onboard packet switching satellite systems. The algorithms are motivated by the limited onboard satellite buffer, the large propagation delay, and low computational capabilities inherent in satellite communication systems. We develop an algorithm using the predicted individual cell loss ratio instead of using steady state cell loss ratios. We demonstrate the CAC benefits of this approach over using steady state cell loss ratios as well as predicted total cell loss ratios. We also derive the predictive saturation probability and the predictive cell loss ratio and use them to control the total number of connections. Predictive congestion control mechanisms allow a satellite network to operate in the optimum region of low delay and high throughput. This is different from the traditional reactive congestion control mechanism that allows the network to recover from the congested state. Numerical and simulation results obtained suggest that the proposed predictive scheme is a promising approach for real time CAC.

  • The conventional PWM method, which was used in controlling the on-off valve, such as high-speed solenoid valve, was modulating the width of the pulse applied to the valve, by selecting arbitrary sampling time and modulating the duty-ratio in proportion to the error. However, in this method, a selection of long sampling time was inevitable and it was unable to get a high accuracy and a quick response. This study is for designing an appropriate controller for high-speed solenoid valve by proposing an improved duty-ratio modulation method using the Saw-toothed Carrier Wave which enables a short sampling time selection, high accuracy of control, and a quick response. Test which was carried out in the laboratory shows that transient and steady state response could be improved by PID controller.

  • A thin metal-embedding Schottky device was fabricated for an efficient photoelectric device. Semitransparent thick of 10 nm metal layers were deposited by sputtering of Ag and Ni on a Si substrate. The (111) N-type Si wafers with one-side polished, 450~500 ${\mu}m$ and resistivity $1{\sim}20{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ were used. High rectifying ratio about 100 from Ni-Schottky device was achieved. This design would provide an effective scheme for high-performing photoelectric devices.

Improvement of Device Characteristic on Solution-Processed InGaZnO Thin-Film-Transistor (TFTs) using Microwave Irradiation

  • Solution-derived amorphous indium-gallium-zinc oxide (a-IGZO) thin-film-transistor (TFTs) were developed using a microwave irradiation treatment at low process temperature below $300^{\circ}C$. Compared to conventional furnace-annealing, the a-IGZO TFTs annealed by microwave irradiation exhibited better electrical characteristics in terms of field effect mobility, SS, and on/off current ratio, although the annealing temperature of microwave irradiation is much lower than that of furnace annealing. The microwave irradiated TFTs showed a smaller $V_{th}$ shift under the positive gate bias stress (PGBS) and negative gate bias stress (NGBS) tests owing to a lower ratio of oxygen vacancies, surface absorbed oxygen molecules, and reduced interface trapping in a-IGZO. Therefore, microwave irradiation is very promising to low-temperature process.
