Objectives: This study aimed to examine the level of dementia knowledge of older Korean adults living alone in rural areas and to identify related factors. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive design was applied. The participants were 231 older adults living alone who were recruited from 12 of the 13 primary health care posts in the rural area of Chuncheon. Participants' level of dementia knowledge was assessed using the Dementia Knowledge Scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and the t-test, analysis of variance, chi-square test, and Mann-Whitney test were applied. Results: Participants' mean age was $77.3{\pm}5.4$ years, and women comprised 79.7% of the sample. Over half of the participants (61.9%) had no formal education, and all the participants were enrolled in Medical Aid. The participants' average percentage of correct answers was 61.6%. The highest rate (94.4%) was for the item "Dementia can change one's personal character." The item with the lowest proportion of correct answers was "Dementia is not treatable" (23.4%). Dementia knowledge was significantly associated with age, education, health coverage, source of living expenses, and dementia risk. Conclusions: Dementia knowledge among Korean rural older adults living alone was relatively low. Participants' misconceptions about symptoms and treatment could hinder them from seeking early treatment. The results of this study suggest the need for active outreach and health care delivery for rural older adults living alone in South Korea.
Behavioral symptoms are frequent and problematic components of dementia. The aim of this study was to detect behavioral problem of the 25 item of dementia problem behaviour(DPB)assesment scale for demented older adults. Seventy-three patients with dementia staying in the day care center, group home, dementia hospital, nursing home were recruited data on problematic behavior obtained through interviews with their caregiver during 2 months from March to May 2004. Results shows that problematic behaviors common occurring in 95% of subjects. The most frequently exhibited problematic behaviors were repetitive movement(1.05), repetitive questions(1.03), restlessness(1.0). indifference(0.97). shouting/screaming(0.92). Problematic Behaviors of the demented older adults were closely associated to the distress for caregiver. Most distressful ones for caregivers were repetitive questions(1.46), repetitive movement(1.42), shouting/screaming (1.42), indifference(1.41). restlessness(1.41). Problematic Behaviors of the demented older adults were divided into six subdivisions, among those restless behavior was positively correlated with aggressive behavior, nervous symptom and psychotic symptom. and then nervous symptom was interrelated to psychotic symptom(P<0.01). This study has limitation that field study data were derived from various primary caregivers.
Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the level of person-centered care, patient safety culture, and fall prevention behaviors of eldercare facility workers, and identify influencing factors. Methods: Data were collected from 185 care workers at eight eldercare facilities in City J from February 1 to March 25, 2022. The data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 25.0. Results: The results indicated that the factors influencing fall prevention behaviors in older adults with dementia were person-centered care (β=.28, p=001), patient safety culture (β=.21, p=.012), age (β=-.18, p=.005), and participation in fall prevention education (β=-.15, p=.018). The explanatory power of the model was 31.6%. Conclusion: These results suggest that, to improve fall prevention behaviors in older adults with dementia, efforts to promote person-centered care and patient safety culture are necessary. Accordingly, effective measures such as developing fall prevention education and programs should be explored to provide safe and high-quality care for older adults with dementia.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors influencing health-related quality of life among spouses of older adults with dementia based on an ecological model. Methods: This study used data from the 2015 Korean Community Health Survey with the subjects of 541 spouses of older adults with dementia. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, ANOVA, and hierarchical multiple regression. Results: In this study, 26.5% of quality of life was explained by employment status, physical activity, perception of stress, perception of depressive symptom, self-rated health status, self-rated oral health status, and contact with neighbors. Conclusion: To develop more effective nursing intervention for improvement of quality of life, it needs to consider not only the individual system related factors but also community system related factors including contact with neighbors.
PURPOSE: This study measured the impact of a 12-week fall-prevention exercise program on balance, ambulatory ability, lower limb strength, and psychosocial characteristics in older adults diagnosed with dementia. METHODS: The participants comprised 31 older adults (9 men, 22 women) diagnosed with Alzheimer's or vascular dementia at a long-term care hospital located in Gunsan City. A fall-prevention exercise program was provided to the experimental group, while the control group was only provided with instruction and materials related to the fall-prevention exercise program. The participants were evaluated before the intervention, 6 weeks after the intervention, and 12 weeks after the intervention on static and dynamic balance abilities (using Timed Up and Go test: TUG, Tinetti-balance scale, one-leg standing test: OLS), gait (Tinetti-balance scale, 6-minute walk test: 6MWT), lower limb strength (sit to stand test; STS), and psychosocial characteristics (Short Form 36 Health Survey-Korean version, Korean Mini-Mental State Exam). RESULTS: An independent samples t-test and repeated measures analysis of variance were used for the statistical analysis. There were statistically significant improvements after the intervention (p<.05) in dynamic balance abilities (TUG and OLS using the left foot), gait (6MWT), and lower limb strength (STS) for the experimental group, but not for the control group. No difference was seen in psychosocial characteristics. CONCLUSION: Older adults with dementia who participated in the fall-prevention exercise program showed significant improvements in their static and dynamic balance abilities, lower limb strength, and ambulatory ability after the intervention.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of depression and suicidal ideation in elders with dementia and to identify factors influencing their suicidal ideation. Methods: A descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted from February to March, 2011. The participants were 298 older adults whose MMSE-KC score was 15 to 23. Collected Data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: According to the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) classification criteria, 86.2% of the elders in this study exhibited depression (GDS=5), and 31.5% manifested severe depression. The mean score of suicidal ideation was 5.70 (range 0-20). The risk factors for suicidal ideation were depression, suicidal attempt experience, present location for care, and activities of daily living. Conclusion: The results of this study can be utilized in the development of suicide prevention programs for older adults with dementia. In particular, depression should be screened and managed to reduce suicidal ideation of older adults with dementia.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of fall-related knowledge and fall prevention self-efficacy of care-givers working in long-term care hospitals on fall prevention behaviors and fall management behaviors for older adults with dementia. Methods: Participants were 125 care-givers working in long-term care hospitals. Data were collected with structured questionnaires from August 7 to 14, 2018. Data were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, $Scheff{\dot{e}}$ test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple regression analysis using SPSS 18.0. Results: Fall prevention self-efficacy influence fall prevention behaviors(${\beta}=.55$, p<.001), while fall-related knowledge impacted fall management behaviors(${\beta}=.43$, p<.001). Conclusions: The results suggest that an education program for fall prevention of older adults with dementia in long-term care hospitals should focus on improving the fall-related knowledge and fall prevention self-efficacy of care-givers to increase both the fall prevention behaviors and fall management behaviors of care-givers.
Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate factors affecting the dementia screening test based on the health belief model. Methods: The survey was conducted with structured questionnaires assessing the knowledge of dementia, health beliefs, self-efficacy and cue to action for dementia screening. Study participants were 156 older adults and data from 121 respondents were analyzed. Descriptive statistics, frequency percentage, chi-squared (${\chi}^2$) test, t-test and logistic regression analysis were conducted using SPSS version 23.0. Results: Factors influencing the dementia screening test were found to be gender, self-efficacy on dementia screening, and the presence of family or friends who underwent dementia screening. Older adults who were female (OR=4.92, p=.003), showed an increasing average score of self-efficacy for dementia screening (OR=2.85, p=.002), and had family members or friends who underwent dementia screening (OR=4.60, p=.003) were more likely to receive dementia screening. Conclusion: This study showed that education and programs enhancing self-efficacy associated with the dementia screening test, as well as utilizing the network of family or friends are necessary to increase the rate of dementia screening.
