The impact of freshwater discharge on plankton was investigated in a semi-closed Cheonsu Bay during the rainy season. Field observations for environmental factors (seawater temperatures, salinities, chlorophyll a concentrations and nutrient concentrations) and zooplankton sampling were carried out from June 27 to September 1, 2012 at about 10 days interval. The relationship between the measured parameters and estimated values of zooplankton abundance were examined. After freshwater discharge, nutrient concentrations increased up to about twice and resultant increase of chlorophyll a followed within about 10 days. Both positive and negative impacts on zooplankton were observed. Positive one was the numerical response of zooplankton on this increased food supply, and negative one was the increased mortality caused by sudden changes in salinity. Maximum mortality of copepods was found to be up to 40%, although fast sinking of carcass made it difficult to estimate reliable mortality caused by salinity shock.

The ESCORT model is applied at Mokpo coastal zone to analyze the effect of fresh water discharge released from the gates of the Youngsan River sea-dyke. Applicability and validity of both 2-D and 3-D hydrodynamic modules could be guaranteed by simulating hydrodynamic feature with ebb dominance characteristics. Then, effects of the released discharge on the hydrodynamics are investigated. And analysis of the effects on diffusion phenomena show that 3-D model is essential for such diffusion modelling. Moreover, vertical salinity distributions near the gates are examined, and the influence range of fresh water is also estimated, which shows that dilution of fresh water is going on slowly because of poor flushing.
The current system of the East China Sea, a marginal sea in the northwest Pacific, has a seasonal variation. The Changjiang Diluted Water, Chinese coastal water in the East China Sea, has different seasonal paths. It flows southward along the Chinese coast within a narrow band in winter and does northeastward the Korea/Tsushima Strait in summer, which has been a subject to many researchers. In particular, low salinity in the South Sea of Korea in 1996 and 1998 was in discord with the Changjiang River discharge and the Changjiang Diluted Water seems to play an important role in occurrence of red tide in the South Sea of Korea in 1997 and on the contrary, disappearance in the next year. These facts suggested that the Changjiang Diluted Water does not flow along the same path in every summer. According to the analyses for path of the Changjiang Diluted Water using ocean color images by SeaWiFS and salinity observations by shipboard CTD in August for recent years, the Changjiang Diluted Water in summer flowed within the range of direction from southeastward to north-northeastward anticlockwise. However, the Changjiang Diluted Water flowed northeastward toward Jeju Island of Korea for the most part. It is necessary to examine the influence of major factors on path variability of the CDW in summer such as surface wind, the Changjiang River discharge and background current.

The buoyancy and initial momentum fluxes make near-field dominated by buoyant jet when thermal discharge releases underwater. In order to estimate prediction capabilities of those near-field phenomena, non-hydrostatic RANS applied CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamic) model was used. Condition of model was composed based on past laboratory experiments. Numerical simulations carried out for the horizontal buoyant jet in the stagnant flow and vertical buoyant jet into crossflow. The results of simulation are compared with the terms of trajectory and dilution rate of laboratory experiments and analytic model(CorJET) results. CFD model showed a good agreement with them. CFD model can be appropriate for assessment of submerged thermal discharge effect because CFD model can resolve the limitations of near-field analytic model and far-field quasi 3D hydrodynamic model. The accuracy and capability of the CFD model is reviewed in this study. If the computational efficiency get improved, CFD model can be widely applied for simulation of transport and diffusion of submerged thermal discharge.

This study suggested a method calculating the influence of effluent discharge from Saemangeum sluice-gates using the particle tracking model. For 2017, we presented the seasonal effects of effluent discharge as probability spatial distributions and compared with the results of the water age, one of the indicators of transport time scale. The influence of sluice-gates effluent discharge increases radially around Sinshi or Gaseok gates, which are expected to be biased toward the south in winter and north in summer due to the effect of seasonal winds. Although the results of the prediction are limited to the 2017 situation, the method of calculating the influence of sluice-gates effluent discharge using the Lagrangian particle tracking model can be used to predict the future of the around Saemangeum.

Overtopping Wave Energy Convertor (OWEC) is an offshore wave energy convertor for collecting the overtopping waves and converting the water pressure head into electric power through the hydro turbines installed in the vertical duct which is fixed in the sea bed. The numerical wave tank based on the commercial computational fluid dynamics code Fluent is established for the corresponding analysis. Several incident wave conditions and shape parameters of the overtopping device are calculated. The straight line type and parabolic type of the sloping arm are compared in the optimal designing investigation of the overtopping characteristics and discharge for OWEC device. The numerical results demonstrate that the parabolic sloping arm is available for wave running up and the overtopping discharge increasing.

To determine the temporal variations of submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) and SGD-driven nutrients inputs, we measured the seepage rate and the nutrient concentrations of pore water/groundwater in Bangdu Bay of Jeju Island at two and three month intervals from September 2009 to September 2010. The seepage rate of groundwater ranged from 0 to 330 cm/day (average ~170 cm/day) during the five sampling periods, which increased sharply from high tide to low tide due to changes in hydraulic pressure gradient between water table in land and water sea level in the coastal ocean by the tidal cycles. The submarine inputs of groundwater were also relatively higher in summer than in winter. The nutrient fluxes from SGD were about 90~100%, 70~95%, and 65~100% of the total input (except from open ocean waters) for dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), phosphorus (DIP), and silicate (DSi), respectively, potentially supporting about 0.9~33 g $carbon/m^2/day$ of new primary production in Baugdu Bay. Thus, our study suggests that SGD-driven nutrients may play an important role in the eutrophication and biological production in the coastal ocean of Jeju Island.

A small hydropower plant(SHP) using cooling water discharged from the power plant was constructed in Samcheonpo. This study presents predicted and measured hydrological data in the construction process of small hydropower plant in order to evaluate characteristics of water level variation of cooling water discharge channel which is a key factor in the design of SHP since the water level rise of channel is related to impact on circulating water system of the existing power plant. Various methods were applied for prediction of water level variation in the design stage from simple empirical formula to sophisticated 3-dimensional CFD method. Measured results reveal that mean value was similar between measured and predicted, but measured results were larger than predicted in deviation. Moreover, simple formula, i.e. standard weir equation and Honma equation, were more useful before installation of SHP, but sophisticated methods during operation of SHP.
