Purpose: This study is research of the conditions which causes difference between the refractive power of the measurement of autorefractometer and the prescription using phoropter. Methods: Autorefractometer (SR-7000) and phoroptor (AV-9000) were used to measure 60 eyes of 30 participants who had no eye diseases and wore the corrective lens due to Ametropia. To prevent the dependence of the prescription value of the refractive power on the testers, two testers measured the refractive power of the eyes of the participants at the same measuring conditions. Results: Statistically, the prescribed values of the refractive power by two testers were not significantly different. Most of the prescribed values of the refractive power were smaller than the refractive power by autorefractometer In case of myopic eyes, the difference between refractive powers by the measurement of autorefractometer and the prescription using phoropter showed the trend of increase as the spherical refractive power became larger. The result was analyzed by the range of the different cylindrical refractive power for the myopic astigmatic eyes. In this case, the difference between refractive powers showed the trend of decrease as the cylindrical refractive power became larger. Conclusions: No difference between the prescribed value by two testers was observed. In case of myopic or myopic astigmatic eyes, the difference between refractive powers by autorefractometer and the prescription were measured to be approximately proportional to the refractive powers of ametropic eyes. As the this difference become larger for the participant who needs the lens of larger refractive power, additional caution is needed in the prescription of the refractive power of the corrective lens.
Purpose: This study was designed to investigate the current status of visual acuity for elementary school students in Muan-gun and to analyze improvements of their visual function after vision training for the elementary school students who have either insufficiency of accommodation or vergence. Methods: Subjective refraction, objective refraction and binocular function were examined for 335 elementary school children from year 1 to year 6 live in Muan area, and then 47 students who have symptoms of binocular dysfunction among them were selected. We analyzed and compared between before and after vision training (VT) in binocular vision function results. Results: The results show that most of the subjects had much problem in near point convergence (NPC) than accommodation. After the vision training, the average of subjects NPC was improved about 5.93 cm, from $11.57 {\pm}1.850$ cm for before VT to $5.66{\pm}0.965$ cm for after VT. After VT positive fusional vergence at near distance after VT was $19.64{\pm}3.66$$\Delta$, which was as much as double of near phoria. Accommodative amplitude was improved from $10.02{\pm}2.566$ D for before VT to $12.30{\pm}1.397$ D for after VT, which similar to mean of expected accommodative amplitude of 11.27 years old. Conclusions: Among insufficiency of accommodation and vergence NPC was improved specially, and accommodative facility and other ocular functions were also improved. Therefore, it is considered the vision training is very effective to recover from visual function problems.
Purpose: This study was designed to be used as the basic visual function data after analyzing and investigating the refractive errors variation between city and rural elementary school children. Methods: To compare with city and rural areas, 2501 elementary school children who lived in Mokpo, Yeongam, Muan, Hampyeong were participated. Objective refraction, Subjective refraction and binocular function examinations were measured. Results: Mean of refractive error of rural areas was -1.47 D in 2012 years, -1.52 D in 2013 years, and -1.40 D in 2014 years. However average of refractive error was -1.65 D in 2012 years, -1.76 D in 2013 years and -1.75 D in 2014 years who lives in city areas. Average myopia was showed higher who lives in rural areas elementary school children than city areas elementary school children. There were significant differences between rural areas and city areas elementary school children (p = 0.03), but there were no significant differences by averagre hyperopia (p = 0.32). Average myopia was showed the tendency of increase as the students get older by analysis compare with rural and city areas elementary school children. It also showed high prevalence of myopia who lives in city areas elementary school children compare with lives in rural areas elementary school children. Conclusions: It is the very important to performed regular visual acuity test and correction during the largest refractive change period and it is necessary to have experts in the visual acuity test.
Purpose: This study was designed to investigate the condition of refractive correction and heterophoria and monocular pupillary distance on myopic elementary school children wearing glasses in Gwangju city. Methods: Subjective refraction and objective refraction were examined after investigating heterophoria and monocular pupillary distance on 145 (290eye) elementary school children wearing myopia-corrected glasses. Results: 1. Anisometropia > 2.00 D was present in 4 children (3%). 2. 9 anisometropia (47%) were present in 19 undercorrected visual acuity boy wearers. and 16 anisometropia (64%) were present in 25 undercorrected visual acuity girl wearers. 3. Among the 67 myopic glasses boy wearers, the distance between optical centers was coincided with the pupillary distance in 30% (Oculus Uterque), and discrepant in 70% (Oculus Uterque). Among the 78 myopic glasses girl wearers, the distance between optical centers was coincided with the pupillary distance in 23% (Oculus Uterque), and discrepant in 77% (Oculus Uterque). The mean optical center distance was longer than the pupillary distance on both boy and girl wearers 4. The result of measured heterophoria revealed 14% for orthophoria, 63% for exophoria, 23% for esophoria at far distance and 10% for orthophoria, 76% for exophoria, 14% for esophoria at near distance. Conclusions: Correct refractive test and monocular pupillary distance must be examined because incorrect refractive test and pupillary distance induce asthenopia and heterophoria.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to research any effect on vision protecting or decreasing VDT syndrome of extracted anthocyanine from fermented purple sweet potato and blueberry. Methods: Subjects were aged 19-20 years old who do not have ophthalmic and systemic diseases and over -N4.00 D of refraction error. 40 mg of extracted anthocyanine from fermented purple sweet potato, from blueberry, and control group, placebo were dosed at separate try. After 2 hours later, subjects were directed perform visual display terminal (VDT) work for 2 hours. Objective refractive error was measured before dosing anthocyanine and after VDT work for 2 hours. Degree of head ache, eye pain and strain and subjective symptoms of neck, shoulder and waist was also examined through interviews by dividing its degree into severe, moderate, slight or none. Results: After 2 hours VDT work, vision protection effect in terms of refractive error for dominant eye was decreased by $0.031{\pm}0.21$ D in the group of extracted anthocyanine from fermented purple sweet potato, $0.006{\pm}0.32$ D in the group of extracted anthocyanine from blueberry. However, there was significantly myopic progression in the placebo group by $0.144{\pm}0.28$ D (t=2.27, p=0.03). Conclusions: It is considered that extracted anthocyanine from fermented purple sweet potato inhibits increase of refraction anomalies of dominant eye rather than non-dominant eye after VDT work.
Purpose: This study was designed to investigate the condition of refractive correction on wearing glasses currently of elementary school children and their accommodative ability in Jinju city. Methods: Objective refraction, subjective refraction, amplitude of accommodation, negative and positive accommodation, accommodative facility, and dynamic retinoscopy were examined on 60 elemenary school children who aged 8~12 wearing myopiacorrected glasses. Results: The condition of refractive corrections was distributed that a case of full correction was 11.7%, a case of low correction with more than 0.8 visual acuity (VA) was 10%, and a case of low correction with less than 0.8 VA was 78.3% in wearing glasses currently. In results from examination of accommodative ability, the number of children having accommodative anomaly is 8 persons (13.3%), they were divided into accommodation insufficiency (4 persons), accommodative facility insufficiency (2 persons), accommodation excess (1 person), and accommodation insufficiency related to ocular function (1 person). Conclusions: It is demanded a periodic inspection of refractive correction to growing children, and the refractive correction after due consideration to accommodative ability is really needed.
Silicone hydrogel contact lenses developed as a continuous-wear modality are now used as a daily-wear contact lenses. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical performance in a group of successful long-term wearers of conventional hydrogel contact lenses when refitted with daily wear $O_2OPTIX$ silicone hydrogel lenses. Sixty-two wearers ($30.7{\pm}19.9$ months of prior lens wear) among sixty-five soft lens wearers refitted with $O_2OPTIX$ silicone hydrogel lenses were participated in this study finally. Subjective symptoms were scored and objective signs were graded using CCLRU scales during the study period. 98% of subjects were successfully refitted with the one base curve of $O_2OPTIX$, and 33.9% of subjects were needed more or less lens powers compared with their habitual lenses. Subjects reported a concurrent reduction in dryness, redness and tiredness compared with their habitual lenses and both subjective and objective evaluations showed that dryness, tiredness, itchiness, bulbar and limbal hyperemia were decreased and significantly decreased particularly for those subjects with greater baseline symptoms (p<0.0001). But corneal staining was increased and was seen in many subjects during the study (p<0.0001). Refitting existing soft contact lens wearers with silicone hydrogel contact lens could result in a decreased in dryness, redness and tiredness, particularly more effective for those subjects with greater baseline of those symptoms. When patients using conventional hydrogel materials switch to a silicone hydrogel material, the potential for increased corneal staining should be considered and over-refraction should be needed to give a best vision.
The purpose of this study was to perform a clinical test using ez NANOsence II RGP contact lenses for the effects of visual acuity and cornea on subjects with abnormal refraction status. One hundred twenty one adults (twenty nine males, ninety two females, range = 17 to 43, mean = 22.86) were recorded. The subject's history including, the symptoms from previous lens wear, were studied. The subjects were observed, both pre and post lens wear, for any symptoms and signs of change of the eye. The Visual acuity and the binocular status were tested at the far distance using the contact lens. The refraction test was performed on the naked eye using the objective method (Topcon KR-8100, Japan). The Stereopsis test was performed at the near distance after contact lens wear by the Titmus fly (Stereo Optical Co., U.S.A) and TNO (TECH, The netherlands). The contrast sensitivity diagnosis was performed at 1m distance after contact lens wear by the contrast sensitivity chart (pelli-Robertson, USA). The corneal topography was analyzed on the naked eye after lens wear by ORB scan (Bausch Lomb, U.S.A.). The ultra structure of surface on the contact lens was observed using SEM (JMS-5800, Japan). The chemical component's of the contact lens was analyzed by EDS program. The results of this study were as follows: 1. The longer of contact lens wear period, The subjects have acquired the most improved visual function. 2. Subjects had experienced few side effects wearing the contact lenses. 3. The lenses were easy to use by the subjects. 4. The longer of contact lens wear period, the power of cornea had more decrease. but the base curve of cornea had more increase and corneal astigmatism was decrease (p<0.01). Also, the thickness of corneal center was few decrease. 5. Longer periods of using the contact lens showed stereopsis and contrast sensitivity at more normal values. 6 The corneal topographical after lens wear showed most subjects with similar morphology for different wear periods. 7. The surface ultrastructure of the new and used contact lens was the similar fine shape. 8. The chemical component's of in the new and used contact appeared to have similar results. In conclusion, this study showed that the surface ultrastructure and chemical component's of the new and used contact lens are similar. In addition, the subjects had improved the quality of vision and few experienced any side effects during long periods of contact lens wear. Also they have decrease of corneal astigmatism during the long period of lens wear. Our test has showed that the chemical composition and fine structure of contact lens have related to the visual function on contact lens wearer. In this paper, we suggested that ez NANOsence II RGP contact lenses had a moderate effect for correcting vision of abnormal refraction eye.
This paper intends to introduce more objective and qualitative rock mass classification method easily applicable to the excavation of gneissic masses showing corestone weathering profiles. It is proven that corestone weathering profile could be divided with reasonable accuracy into digging, ripping and blasting layers using visual and simple mechanical techniques such as Schmidt hammer rebound test on cut slopes, taking into consideration strength and spacial distribution of corestone, workability and work efficiency of excavation. Also, seismic refraction surveys were employed for shallow investigations (down to $20{\sim}30m$ depth) in corestone weathering profile and conducted across the top of vertical exposures where the underlying geology could be directly inspected. Some discrepancies ($3{\sim}4m$ in average and 6 m occasionally) between the actual and assumed materials with respect to seismic velocities were observed. Thus it can be concluded that field geotechnical mapping and field seismic test should be used together in order to get a relatively good accuracy in assessing likely excavation conditions of corestone weather-ing profiles.
The researchers have studied on the effect of three main morphological types(nuclear, cortical, and subcapsular cataract) of age related cataract on refractive error. We also identified that spherical and cylinderical shift in each type of morphological cataract accoding to their locations and effect of intraocular pressure before and after cataract surgery. Nuclear cataract showed myopic shift while cortical cataract showed hyperopic shift, and subcapsular cataract showed not significant changes on both direction. Age related cataract subjects(120 eyes) only were recruited from sun-cheon area. We use optic section of slit lamp biomicroscope to identify the anatomical location of cataract, and optimal refractive correction determined by objective(retinoscope) and subjective refraction then spherical changes were calculated from the spherical eqivalent value. Intra-ocular pressure were measured by auto-tonometer before and 7 days after cataract has been replaced by IOL. The change in cylindrical power, usually A-P diameter decreased according to increases of age, A-P diameter increased because intra-ocular pressure rises by progression of cataract and this convertion with the rule astigmatism to against the rule astigmatism and this increases more by intra-ocular pressure.
