  • This study focused on the Korean-wave content consumed in the global market and analyzed success/failure factors of services through business model analysis. It aims to offer an effective new media content platform model. ViKi, Drama Fever, Maaduu.com which are representative global OTT were researched on management strategy by case analysis. The success of the global OTT platform is organized into three factors, target customer coverage, revenue model and community activation. Clear and wide coverage of target customer is important to determine the value of the service. Also, revenue model based on the pay service and community for Korean-wave fandom are essential to make good performance in new media platform business.

  • In addition to the OTT video production service represented by Nexflix and YouTube, a personalized recommendation system for content with artificial intelligence has become common. YouTube's personalized recommendation service system consists of two neural networks, one neural network consisting of a recommendation candidate generation model and the other consisting of a ranking network. Netflix's video recommendation system consists of two data classification systems, divided into content-based filtering and collaborative filtering. As the online platform-led content production is activated by the Corona Pandemic, the field of virtual influencers using artificial intelligence is emerging. Virtual influencers are produced with GAN (Generative Adversarial Networks) artificial intelligence, and are unsupervised learning algorithms in which two opposing systems compete with each other. This study also researched the possibility of developing AI platform based on individual recommendation and virtual influencer (metabus) as a core content of OTT in the future.

  • In a situation where service providers are increasingly focusing on content development due to the intense competition in the OTT market, interactive content that encourages active participation from viewers is garnering significant attention. In response to this trend, research on interactive content is being conducted more actively. This study aims to analyze interactive content through text mining techniques, with a specific focus on online unstructured data. The analysis includes deriving the characteristics of keywords according to their weight, examining the relationship between OTT platforms and interactive content, and tracking changes in the trends of interactive content based on objective data. To conduct this analysis, detailed techniques such as 'Word Cloud', 'Relationship Analysis', and 'Keyword Trend' are used, and the study also aims to derive meaningful implications from these analyses.

Factors Influencing OTT Continued Use: Focusing on the Behavioral Economics Perspective (행동경제학 관점에서 본 온라인 동영상 서비스(OTT)의 지속적 이용에 영향을 미치는 요인에 관한 연구)

  • The study explored the key factors(content satisfaction factor, functional satisfaction factor, inertia factor and situational factor) that influence OTT users' continued use from the perspective of Behavioral Economics. In addition to rational factors that make OTT users feel satisfied after experiencing the contents and functions by the platform, we assumed that it would also affect habitual factors from the 'status quo bias'. To verify this, an online survey was conducted on 523 adults in 20s and 40s who have subscribed to the Top3 OTT platform(Netflix, Wavve, and Tving). As a result of regression analysis, 'content satisfaction factor', 'functional satisfaction factor' and 'inertia factor' were significant in OTT continued use. 'Inertia factor' did not affect domestic OTT users. Unlike previous studies that supposed OTT service users as beings with complete rationality, this study is meaningful to explain OTT continued use by applying 'bounded rationality'.

  • This paper illustrates not only the effectiveness of applying content quota system for on-demand video streaming platform, but also the effect of OTT regulation on copyright protection and cultural industry protection in a single market, focusing on the community's response to Netflix's entry into the EU market. Additionally, this paper examines on-demand video streaming services, growth of Netflix. The EU policy on the on-demand video streaming service market consists of 'portability' in the digital single market and content quota for copyright protection. In this paper, I analyze the market protection and the aspect of improving competitiveness of online streaming service industry. The EU is trying to protect the cultural industry and copyright protection in the region by applying and regulating the OTT business in content quota system, which has been applied only to European broadcasting companies.

Comparative Study of User Reactions in OTT Service Platforms Using Text Mining (텍스트 마이닝을 활용한 OTT 서비스 플랫폼별 사용자 반응 비교 연구)

  • This study employs text mining techniques to compare user responses across various Over-The-Top (OTT) service platforms. The primary objective of the research is to understand user satisfaction with OTT service platforms and contribute to the formulation of more effective review strategies. The key questions addressed in this study involve identifying prominent topics and keywords in user reviews of different OTT services and comprehending platform-specific user reactions. TF-IDF is utilized to extract significant words from positive and negative reviews, while BERTopic, an advanced topic modeling technique, is employed for a more nuanced and comprehensive analysis of intricate user reviews. The results from TF-IDF analysis reveal that positive app reviews exhibit a high frequency of content-related words, whereas negative reviews display a high frequency of words associated with potential issues during app usage. Through the utilization of BERTopic, we were able to extract keywords related to content diversity, app performance components, payment, and compatibility, by associating them with content attributes. This enabled us to verify that the distinguishing attributes of the platforms vary among themselves. The findings of this study offer significant insights into user behavior and preferences, which OTT service providers can leverage to improve user experience and satisfaction. We also anticipate that researchers exploring deep learning models will find our study results valuable for conducting analyses on user review text data.

The Effects of Perceived Netflix Personalized Recommendation Service on Satisfying User Expectation (지각된 넷플릭스 개인화 추천 서비스가 이용자 기대충족에 미치는 영향)

  • The OTT (Over The Top) platform promotes itself as a distinctive competitive advantage in that it allows users to stay on the platform longer and visit more often through a Personalized Recommendation Service. In this study, the characteristics of the Personalized Recommendation Service are divided into three categories: recommendation accuracy, recommendation diversity, and recommendation novelty. Then proposed a research model which affects the usefulness of users to recognize recommendation services by each characteristics and leads to satisfaction of expectations. The result of conducting an online survey of 300 people in their 20s and 30s who subscribe Netflix shows that the perceived usefulness increased when the accuracy, variety, and novelty of Netflix's Recommendation Service were high. It was also confirmed that high perceived usefulness leads to satisfaction of expectations before and after Netflix use. The derived research results can confirm the importance of evaluating the personalized recommendation service in terms of user experience and provide implications for ways to improve the quality of recommendation services.

A Study on the Influencing Factors from Use Intention &Flow of Netflix Users (넷플릭스 이용자의 이용 의도와 몰입에 이르는 영향요인 연구)

  • This study attempted to identify the effect of personal innovation, perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness on the intention to use for users of OTT service platform Netflix, and finally affects flow and addiction. According to the research results, personal innovation has a positive impact on compatibility, simplicity and perceived usefulness, simplicity and perceived usefulness have a positive effect on use intention, compatibility and use intention have a positive effect on flow, and flow has a positive effect on addiction. This study is meaningful in that it can improve the understanding of user intention based on Netflix's new subscription standard and provide basic data that can be used for basic research on OTT service users' flow and addiction and development strategies of OTT content providers.

Over-The-Top (OTT) Platforms' Strategies for Two-Sided Markets in Korea

  • The purpose of this paper is to present the Over-The-Top (OTT) platforms' strategies for two-sided markets. For this, we examine six strategic factors influencing OTT's success in Korea. The analysis reveals, among six OTTs, Netflix utilizes five strategic factors except the same-side network effects. OTTs from pay TV operators and channel providers tend to block the cross-side network effects on the opponent OTTs, because they think their giveaway to content providers is in vein, if the invested content by them would be consumed on opponent rival platforms. Interesting is that after experiencing a negative association between the market entry of Netflix and the subscription revenue growth rate of pay TV services, pay TV operators utilize the same-side network effects by offering hybrid services in partnership with global OTTs like Netflix, Disney+ which are considered as a complementary OTT. In conclusion, it is suggested to target a new connected TV based OTT service offering with collaboration with Korean TV device manufacturers for Korean OTTs' global strategy, because Netflix-like global market expansion is not easy for them to cover their content cost.

A study on the effects of digital content marketing in OTT (Over The Top) service platform: focusing on indirect advertising types (OTT(Over The Top) 서비스 플랫폼에서 디지털 콘텐츠마케팅 효과 연구: 간접광고 유형을 중심으로)

  • This study measured the effect of PPL(Product Placement: PPL) in OTT(Over The Top) to search a new advertising revenue model according to the change of viewers' video content consumption patterns. On the first, by two research steps, the experiment was carried out using an eye-tracker and then a survey as the second step was administered asking subjects about their attitude about advertising messages, attitude about brand, and intention to purchase the brands used in the experiments. Specifically, the PPL materials used in the experiments were classified with three parts. This study has the meaning as approaching to the PPL research with new methodology by quantitatively access through the eye tracking of the subjects beyond the conventional qualitative measure that depends only on the memory of them. This research aims to find the possibility of indirect advertising as a new revenue model in the OTT environment.
