Effect of temperature on membrane degradation in PEMFCs was studied. After cell operation at different temperatures($60{\sim}90^{\circ}C$) under accelerating degradation conditions(OCV, anode dry, cathode RH 65%) for 144 h, cell performance decreased from 12 to 35%. The results of FER in effluent water showed that this decrease in cell performance was caused by membrane degradation by the attack of $H_2O_2$ or oxygen radicals(${\cdot}OH$, $HO_2{\cdot}$) and that resulted in increase in gas crossover for radical formation. Radical formation on the electrode was confirmed by ESR. Activation energy of 66.2 kJ/mol was obtained by Arrhenius plot used to analyze the effect of temperature on membrane degradation. Increase of cell temperature enhanced gas crossover rate, radical formation rate and membrane degradation rate.
Microbial fuel cells (MFC) were operated with pig wastes and PEMFC (Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells) MEA (Membrane and Electrode Assembly). Performance of hydrocarbon membrane was compared with that of perfluoro membrane at MFC condition. Sulfonated-Poly(Arylene Ether Sulfone) was used as hydrocarbon membrane and Gore membrane was used as perfluoro membrane. OCV of sPAES MEA was 50mV higher than that of Gore MEA and power density of sPAES MEA was similar that of Gore MEA. Reinforcement of sPAES membrane stabilized the performance of MEA in MFC. The highest performance was obtained at temperature of $45^{\circ}C$ and with culture solution circulation rate of 50 ml/min. The highest power density was $1,100mW/m^2$ at optimum condition in MFC using pig waste.
Recently, there are many efforts focused on development of Redox Flow Battery (RFB) for large energy storage system. Economical hydrocarbon membranes alternative to fluorinated membranes for RFB membrane are receiving attention. In this study, characteristics of poly(arylene ether sulfone) (PAES) were compared with expensive fluorinated membrane at VRB (Vanadium Redox Flow Battery) operation condition. Permeability of vanadium ion through membrane, ion exchange capacity (IEC), change of OCV, swelling, charge-discharge curves and energy efficiency were measured. PAES membrane showed lower permeability of vanadium ion, higher IEC and then higher energy efficiency compared with Nafion 117 membranes.
The electrochemical characteristics of $V_2O_5$ as working electrode were studied in the cell (1-butene+$O_2$, $V_2O_5{\mid}YSZ{\mid}Ag$, $O_2$) with a YSZ solid electrolyte. The sintering of Ag as a counter electrode was occurred after calcination, and the structure which has the pores of over $3{\mu}m$ was achieved. In particular, the peak of (010) plane of the working electrode on the XRD spectrum which is responsible for selective oxidation appeared after calcination. The major product of 1-butene oxidation over $V_2O_5$ was butadiene. The technique of SEP (solid electrolyte potentiometry) was used to monitor the chemical potential of chemical species adsorbed on the working electrode. Over a wide range of gas compositions of 1-butene and oxygen, open circuit voltage (OCV) exhibited the mixed potential of surface oxygen activity.

The influencing factors on the OPC (optical proximity correction) results are quantitatively analyzed using OPCed L/S patterns. ${\sigma}$ values of proximity variations are measured to be 9.3 nm and 15.2 nm for PR-A and PR-B, respectively. The effect of post exposure bake condition is assessed. 16.2 nm and 13.8 nm of variations are observed. Proximity variations of 11.6 nm and 15.2 nm are measured by changing the illumination condition. In order not to seriously deteriorate the OPC, these factors should be fixed after the OPC rules are extracted. Proximity variations of 11.4, 13.9, and 15.2 nm are observed for the mask mean-to-targets of 0, 2 and 4 nm, respectively. The decrease the OPC grid size from 1 nm to 0.5 nm enhances the correction resolution and the OCV is reduced from 14.6 nm to 11.4 nm. The enhancement amount of proximity variations are 9.2 nm corresponding to 39% improvement. The critical dimension (CD) uniformity improvement for adopting the small grid size is confirmed by measuring the CD uniformity on real SRAM pattern. CD uniformities are measured 9.9 nm and 8.7 nm for grid size of 1 nm and 0.5 nm, respectively. 22% improvement of the CD uniformity is achieved. The decrease of OPC grid size is shown to improve not only the proximity correction, but also the uniformity.

This paper presents a new state of charge(SOC) estimation of large capacity of Li-ion battery (LIB) based on the multiple model adaptive estimation(MMAE) method. We first introduce an equivalent circuit model of LIB. The relationship between the terminal voltage and the open circuit voltage(OCV) is nonlinear and may vary depending on the changes of temperature and C-rate. In this paper, such behaviors are described as a set of multiple linear time invariant impedance models. Each model is identified at a temperature and a C-rate. These model set must be obtained a priori for a given LIB. It is shown that most of impedances can be modeled by first-order and second-order transfer functions. For the real time estimation, we transform the continuous time models into difference equations. Subsequently, we construct the model banks in the manner that each bank consists of four adjacent models. When an operating point of cell temperature and current is given, the corresponding model bank is directly determined so that it is included in the interval generated by four operating points of the model bank. The MMAE of SOC at an arbitrary operating point (T $^{\circ}C$, $I_{bat}$[A]) is performed by calculating a linear combination of voltage drops, which are obtained by four models of the selected model bank. The demonstration of the proposed method is shown through simulations using DUALFOIL.

The recent trend of performance increase in the smart mobile devices demands more power consumption and lower batter life time. Among three battery models of mathematical model, electrochemical model and electric model, the Thevenin's equivalent circuit with non-linear function model of SOC in the electrical model is widely used. However, the OCV results have only limited accuracy because of the characteristic shift caused by temperature and age and atypical impedance property that cannot expressed by electrical components. In this paper, the new battery model that improves the accuracy of the existing models is proposed. In the proposed simulator the mathematical model for SOC characteristic is improved and the adjustment for the temperature, the age of battery and atypical electrical characteristics. In the experimental results of predicting of the battery in the static and dynamic state, the proposed simulator shows improved MSE comparing to the results of the existing methods.
The durability of the PEMFC stack for large commercial vehicles should be more than 5 times that for passenger vehicles. If the Chemical Accelerated Stress Test (AST) of PEMFC(Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells) membrane for passenger cars is applied as it is for large commercial vehicles, there is a problem that the AST time becomes more than 2,500 hours. In order to shorten the AST time of DOE (Department of Energy), the chemical durability of the polymer membrane was evaluated using oxygen instead of air as a cathode gas. In this study, Nafion XL was used as a polymer membrane to evaluate accelerated durability under OCV, 90?, RH 30%, H2/(air or oxygen) conditions. Among the DOE membrane durability target criteria, the decrease rate of short resistance was the fastest. By using oxygen instead of air, the degradation rate of the polymer membrane was accelerated while being less affected by electrode deterioration, reducing the polymer membrane durability evaluation time to less than half.

Hydrocarbon-based polymer membranes to replace perfluorinated polymer membranes are being continuously researched. However, hydrocarbon-based membranes have a problem in that they are less durable than fluorine-based membranes. In this study, we sought to compare the annealing effect to improve the durability of sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK). After membranes formation, thermogravimetric analysis and tensile strength were measured to compare changes in membranes properties due to annealing. After manufacturing the membrane and electrode assembly (MEA), the initial performance and chemical durability was compared with unit cell operation. During the 24-hour annealing process, the strength increased due to the increase in-S-O-S-crosslinking, and the sulfonic acid group decreased, leading to a decrease in I-V performance. By annealing, the hydrogen permeability was reduced to less than 1/10 of that of the nafion membrane, and as a result, open circuit voltage (OCV) and durability was improved. The SPEEK membranes annealed for 24 hours showed higher durability than the nafion 211 membranes of the same thickness.
