The purpose of this study was to investigate the anthropometry, biochemical parameters and electrolytes concentrations of the Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) patients according to their nutritional status at the time of admission. Thirty-three patients in the Intensive Care Unit at S University Hospital were the subjects of this study. Their nutritional status was classified as At-risk I (Mild PCM, n = 13), At - risk II (Moderate PCM, n = 9) and At-risk III (Marasmus + kwashiorkor + severe PCM, n = 11) . Anthropometeric, biochemical and dietary assessments were performed. The Patients intake of calories (75.02%) and protein (53.15%) was insufficient compare with Korean RDA requirements. The body weight and the Body Mass Index (BMI) in the At-risk III group were significantly lower than in the other groups. The percentage of body weight loss and change of body weight (kg) were significantly higher than in the other groups. The subjects were malnourished as indicated by nutritional related parameters such as serum total protein, albumin, total lymphocyte count (TLC), hemoglobin and hematocrit. Serum total protein, albumin and TLC levels were lower at the time of admission before TPN administration. But after TPN administration, they increased. The electrolyte concentrations did not show any differences following TPN administration. The nutritional status of the patients could be affect by the duration of TPN administration and the number of days of the patients hospitalization. The patients who require nutritional support need the continuous follow-up care and monitoring by a nutritional support team. (Korean J Community Nutrition 8(4) : 574-583, 2003)
The objective of this study was to determine the nutritional support in patients treated in medical intensive care units (MICUs) by evaluating the extent of current nutritional support using the patient care plan and considering the association between nutritional status and the amount of nutrition supplied. From April to December 2010, 114 patients (age ${\qeq}$ 18 years) admitted to the MICU and who underwent nutritional support for > 5 days were included. Descriptive statistics showed that the 114 patients received nutritional support within 1.2 ${\pm}$ 0.7 days and for 16.2 ${\pm}$ 11.7 days in the MICUs. The total delivered/required caloric ratio was 81.08 ${\pm}$ 27.31%, and the protein ratio was 80.32 ${\pm}$ 28.93%. Patients who received > 80% of required calories and protein showed improved nutritional status (p < 0.05). The results showed that adequate nutritional support is crucial to critically ill patients. We suggest early nutritional screening using simple tools such as periodic monitoring and management to recalculate nutritional status and nutritional requirements and nutritional support using a multidisciplinary method. Systematic nutritional support teams are needed to provide adequate nutritional support for patients in the MICU.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: In times of disaster, simplified and minimized nutritional standards are necessary for a quick response to provide nutritious relief food. This study aimed to develop nutrient-based nutritional standards for foodservice at shelters during disasters in the Republic of Korea (South Korea). SUBJECTS/METHODS: The standards were developed in 2 phases. First, nutrients to be included in the standards were selected. Initial candidates were selected considering 3 aspects: preceding standards, insufficient intake during disasters, and inadequate intake among South Koreans. Final selection was made by excluding nutrients for 3 reasons: nutrients for which there is no deficiency concern in South Korea, nutrients whose intake data were not available, or nutrients whose values presented by Dietary Reference Intakes for Koreans are difficult to achieve based on the current diet among South Koreans. Second, the reference values of energy and the selected nutrients were calculated. The reference values for the entire population who were 1-year-old and over were calculated by multiplying the estimated energy requirements or the recommended nutrient intake and the proportion of each age and sex group. Respective reference values were also calculated for 4 different age groups (1-5, 6-11, 12-64, and ≥ 65-year-old). RESULTS: The standards for the entire population were 2,000 kcal for energy, 55 g for protein, 650 ㎍ retinol activity equivalents for vitamin A, 95 mg for vitamin C, 1.1 mg for thiamin, 1.3 mg for riboflavin, 14 mg niacin equivalents for niacin, 350 ㎍ dietary folate equivalents for folic acid, 750 mg for calcium, and 11 mg for iron. Four additional standards corresponding to each age group were developed. CONCLUSIONS: The nutritional standards during disasters were developed for South Korea, including energy and 9 nutrients with reference values for the entire population and 4 different age groups. The standards will contribute to maintaining the health of disaster evacuees in South Korea.
This study deals with the conditions of nutritional intake of the urban elderly (age sixty years and older). This study analysis is based on factors that are influenced on the prevalent conditions of dietary-intake of the urban elderly either it be for better ment of health or desire. The method of this research was based on the interview-survey with questinaire in the Seoul area. In comparison to the surveys taken of the rural society and the urban slum elderly the urban elderly standard nutritional requirements was higher. Of the standard nutritional requrieemtns the twomen's nutrition intake was higher than of the men. But still the problem of malnutrition existed in the urban elderly both men and women at the probability nutritional deficienty rate higher than 30%. The food intake frequency factors which might influence the condition of nutritional intake was significant more than condition of eating. Another important factors of the conditions of nutritioal intake of the urban elderly are one's self-consciousness of health and degree of one's will change . In healthy case of the aged, their will was almost maintained and hand -grip strength was high when they had regular meal with their family . For elderl with the lower academic career and the one with more satisfactory to his meal, their wills didn't change before or after retirement. The objectiveness of this survey is to convince the elderly that the problems of nutritional deficiency can only be solved by reeducation and to improve their nutritional diet to have the enjoyments of a healtheir elderly life.
This study was conducted to develop a nutritional education program based on the health belief model to improve nutritional status among Vietnamese female marriage immigrants in Korea. The education program was developed through literature review, focus group interviews, expert consultation, and pilot tests. Based on theoretical requirements and needs of beneficiaries, the education program was consisted of 16 sessions with nine topics: 'how to evaluate own dietary habits and nutritional status', 'health problems according to dietary habits and nutritional status', 'understanding six food groups', 'healthy eating plan', 'understanding food cultures of Korea and Vietnam', 'traditional and seasonal Korean foods', 'how to cook Korean food', 'nutrition management of family members', and 'practicing of healthy dietary life'. Program contents in each session consisted of activities that could induce outcome and value expectations, self-efficacy, perceived benefits, and barriers and cues to actions regarding dietary behavior. This nutritional education program based on the health belief model would be helpful to implement healthy diet behaviors in Vietnamese marriage immigrants and their families. Extension of these nutritional education programs to health centers and multicultural family support centers would improve the current poor nutrition status of Vietnamese marriage immigrant women. Further studies are needed to validate our program.

The beef cattle industry in China has advanced remarkably since its reform and opening up; consequently, China has become the world's third-largest beef cattle producer. China is also one of the countries with the most substantial research input and output in the field of beef cattle feed and nutrition. The progress and innovation by China in the research field of beef cattle feed and nutrition have undoubtedly promoted the development of the domestic beef cattle industry. This review summarizes recent advances in feed resource development, nutrient requirements, and nutritional regulation of beef cattle in China. Limitations in current research and perspectives on future work are also discussed.

The objective of this work was to investigate the nutritional requirements for the growth of Actinomyces sp. 9RCC5 isolated from the rumen of a native goat in Korea. The growth of strain 9RCC5 on the basal medium or the medium minus certain ingredients from the basal medium demonstrated that strain 9RCC5 showed absolute requirement of vitamin B complex mixture, while hemin and volatile fatty acids (VFA) were stimulatory to growth to some extent. The 9RCC5 strain grew well with casein hydrolysate as the sole added nitrogen source. However, neither a complex of 18 amino acids nor ammonium sulfate effectively replaced casein hydrolysate. Vitamins such as riboflavin and pantothenate were essential for growth, while thiamin and biotin were stimulatory. With regard to VFA, the growth was stimulated by acetic acid but inhibited by valeric acid. Relatively large quantities of $Na^+$, $K^+$ and $Ca^{2+}$ were absolutely required for growth. Supplementation of clarified rumen fluid to the basal medium in a range of 0-10% (vol/vol) resulted in an increased rate of growth as well as an increased extent of growth.
The nutritional requirements for Prevotella sp. 4PCCNB2 isolated from the rumen of a native goat in Korea and those of the ATCC 19189 strain isolated from the bovine rumen were investigated. The two strains grew well with ammonium sulfate as the sole added nitrogen source. However, neither a complex of amino acids nor casein hydrolysate effectively replaced ammonium sulfate. Biotin, p-aminobenzoic acid, and vitamin $B_12$ were essential to culture the ATCC 19189 strain. Unlike the ATCC 19189 strain, however, $B_12$ was only stimulatory for the growth of the 4PCCNB2 strain. The 4PCCNB2 strain grew well in the basal medium without an individual acid such as acetic acid or valeric acid. In contrast, either acetic or valeric acid was absolutely required for the growth of the ATCC 19189 strain.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the nutritional status and dietary habits in predialysis patients of chronic renal failure(CRF). The patients group was composed of total 35 persons with chronic renal failure(diabetes exclusion), male 20, female 15 who were treated in the kidney internal department and the control group also composed of 35 persons, male 18, female 17 who were classified as normal by the medical examination. Their dietary habits, nutritional status and nutritional knowledge were investigated from two general hospitals in Inchon, middle of this year 2002. There were 31.4% of low weight patients (BMI below 20), 77.1% of anemia patients (serum hemoglobin below 12g/㎗), 6S.6% of hypertension patients with diastolic blood pressure over 90mmHg, 80% with systolic blood pressure over 140mmHg, 20% of hypercholesterolemia patients (serum cholesterol over 230mg/㎗), and 22.9% of hyperlipemia patients (serum triglyceride over 200mg/㎗). The cardiovascular disease seemed to be caused by the abnormality of lipid metabolism. The possibility of the bone disease was shown from patients of hyperphosphatemia (serum phosphorus over 4.7mg/㎗, 22.9%) and hypocalcemia (serum calcium below 8.4mg/㎗, 25.7%). Intake of insufficient calories which was caused by the lack of appetite affected on the nutritional status. The intake of most nutrients was not significantly different from the RDA for Koreans. Consequently, the patient groups took a lot of salt even after the diagnosis of CRF. But patients ate 6.lg of salt which were more than the recommended amount 2∼4g for patients with CRF. The patient groups, who had the experiences of nutritional counselling, had significantly higher nutritional knowledge related to CRF than control group. Unfortunately, patients could not have enough chances for nutritional counselling by the nutritionist even though they needed the nutritional informations and dietetic treatments. The continuous research is expected with regard to the detail plan for the improvement of nutritional support and the nutritional counselling because it is important to decide the requirements of nutrients for patients with kidney disease, considering the kidney function and status of nutrition.
Nutritional requirements for the growth of Cellulomonas flavigena were studied. C. flavigena grew well on cellulose when 0.005% or more of yeast extract was present in the growth medium. The growth factor in yeast extrct was, in part, thiamine and biotin. Amino acids had little effect on the growth on the organism. The extent of growth on yeast extract was much higher than that obtained on those vitamins, which indicates the presence of growth factors in yeast extract besides the vitamins, among the carbohydrates tested, the organism grew best on glucose and galactose, and the optimum N/P ratio was within the range of 0.75~3.17.
