  • Purpose: The purpose of this research was to describe how nurses in intensive care units (ICU) work. Method: A total of 18 ICU nurses participated in the research. The data was collected through individual in-depth interviews and analyzed by grounded theory method using NUDIST 4.0 software program. Results: Three different patterns regarding nursing performance among ICU nurses were identified. These are 1) nursing performance of nurses who perform excellently, 2) nursing performance of nurses who do not perform well because of their lack of experience, and 3) nursing performance of nurses who do not perform well in spite of their good years of experience. These three different nursing performances were described in terms of seven different categories; 1) assessing and monitoring nursing problems, 2) clinical decision making, 3) interpersonal relationships, 4) holistic care, 5) technical skills, 6) problem solving, 7) working independently and creatively. This study also identified two intervening factors that influenced the advancement of their expertise. Conclusion: The results of this study might help nurse managers in developing continuing educational programs for inexperienced nurses or those nurses not performing well to become experts by a deeper understanding of the nature of nursing performance and the factors that influence nursing performance in ICU settings.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify nurses' perceptions of the importance of concrete items as a basis for nursing practice. A total of 179 concrete items for basic nursing, which clinical nurses must know in order to practice appropriately, were identified. Method: The participants in this study were 225 nurses who had worked for two to five years in university hospitals. The nurses were asked to rate the importance of the 179 items (in 39 middle range categories) on a 5 point scale. Result: The mean age of the nurses was 26 and about 54% were university graduates. Of the 39 middle range categories those rated as the top ten were transfusion (4.682), IV injection (4.492), po medication (4.476), surgery (4.469), infection control (4.438), IM injection (4.413), safety (4.388), oxygenation (4.376), diagnostic test (4.366), and fluid & electrolyte balance (4.359). The categories that had the lowest scores were sexuality (3.449), conceptual nursing (3.465), spirituality (3.527) and personal hygiene (3.548). Conclusion: The results of this study show that most nurses evaluate items which they use frequently in their practice as important.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was aimed to develop evidence-based nursing practice guideline for preventing intermittent urinary catheterization (IUC) related complications using guideline remake process. Methods: Guideline remake process was conducted according to guideline adaptation manual developed by Gu et al (2012) which consisted of three main phases and 9 modules including a total of 24 steps. Results: Newly developed IUC guideline consists of introduction, overview of intermittent catheterization, summary of recommendations, recommendations, references, and appendices. There were 50 recommendations in 5 sections including assessment, equipments, catheterization, complications management, and education/consult. Three recommendations (6%) were graded A, and five (10%) and 41 recommendations(82%) were B and C, respectively. Conclusion: The IUC remade-guideline was developed based on evidence-based nursing and therefore, this guideline is recommended to be disseminated and utilized by nurses nationwide to improve the quality of care for IUC and to decrease the IUC related complications.

  • Purpose: Patients' perception of fall risk is a promising new indicator for fall prevention. Therefore, a fall risk perception questionnaire that can be used rapidly and repeatedly in acute care settings is required. This study aimed to develop a short version of the fall risk perception questionnaire (Short-FRPQ) for inpatients. Methods: For the psychometric measurements, 246 inpatients were recruited from an acute care hospital. The construct (using confirmatory factor analysis and discriminant validity of each item), convergent, and known-group validities were tested to determine the validity of the Short-FRPQ. McDonald's omega coefficient was used to examine the internal consistency of reliability. Results: In the confirmatory factor analysis, the fit indices of the Short-FRPQ, comprising 14 items and three factors, appeared to be satisfactory. The Short-FRPQ had a significantly positive correlation with the original scale, the Korean Falls Efficacy Scale-International, and the Morse Fall Scale. The risk of falls group, assessed using the Morse Fall Scale, had a higher score on the Short-FRPQ. McDonald's omega coefficient was .90. Conclusion: The Short-FRPQ presents good reliability and validity. As patient participation is essential in fall interventions, evaluating the fall risk perception of inpatients quickly and repeatedly using scales of acceptable validity and reliability is necessary.

  • Objectives: This study investigated the effectiveness of the social marketing mix approach in increasing students' knowledge about smoking, promoting positive attitudes toward smoking cessation, and decreasing smoking behavior. Methods: This quantitative research study incorporated a quasi-experimental method with a pretest-posttest non-equivalent group design. Using the purposive sampling technique, 152 smoking students were selected as participants. They were divided into 2 equal groups, with 76 students in the control group and 76 in the intervention group. The data were collected using questionnaires and analyzed with the chi-square test, independent t-test, Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and Mann-Whitney U-test. Results: The social marketing mix intervention was effective in increasing the students' knowledge about smoking (p<0.001), improving their attitude toward smoking cessation (p<0.001), and reducing their smoking behavior (p=0.014). Conclusions: This approach should be implemented by local governments to reduce smoking behavior in the community, especially among teenagers, in addition to instituting a smoking ban and applying fines.

Methods: The research design was a descriptive survey design using a convenience sampling. Data were collected by self-report questionnaires from 196 elders. Data analysis was done using SPSS 18.0 pc+ program for descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression. Results: The average score for health related quality of life was 3.33 (SD=0.86). Differences in health-related quality of life were statistically significant according to age, gender, occupation, presence of spouse, monthly income, source of income, economic status, medicine, and existence of chronic disease. Health-related quality of life was significantly correlated with malnutrition and social network. Major factors affecting health related quality of life for elders were malnutrition, occupation, age, social network, and economic status which explained 52.0% of the variance in health related quality of life. Conclusion: Findings provide a basis for developing nursing interventions to improve health-related quality of life. Future studies are needed a wide variety of variables that might influence health -related quality of life in elders.

  • Purpose: This descriptive study was performed to explore trends in child health nursing research by analyzing the themes, contents and structure of articles published in 2014 in Child Health Nursing Research, the official journal of the Korean Academy of Child Health Nursing. Methods: Thirty-eight articles were reviewed using keywords, author (s), subjects, ethical considerations, designs, statistics involved, funding resources, and others. Results: Ten domains from 160 keywords were identified as follows, child related, psycho-social variable related, parents and family related, nursing and health related, and others. A mean of 2.9 authors per article was identified and 71% of the authors were academic- affiliated. Twenty-eight articles were human-participant related while 21 articles addressed both Institutional Review Board and written consent. Non-experimental design was the most commonly used method followed by experimental design, and qualitative design. The duration for acceptance was a mean of 89.1 days from submission with most articles requiring a second round of article review. Half of the articles were supported by grant organizations such as Korean National Research Foundation. Conclusion: The findings of the analysis show an improvement in the scientific quality with a diversity of articles in Child Health Nursing Research.
