  • The purpose of this paper is to study the perturbation analysis of the matrix equation $X=I-A^*X^{-1}A+B^*X^{-1}B$. Based on the matrix differentiation, we give a precise perturbation bound for the positive definite solution. A numerical example is presented to illustrate the shrpness of the perturbation bound.

  • This paper presents a study of soil-structure interaction problems using infinite elements. The infinite elements are formulated for homogeneous and layered soil media, based on approximate expressions for three components of propagating waves, namely Rayleigh, compressive and shear waves. The integration scheme which was proposed for problems with single wave component by Zienkiewicz is expanded to the multi-wave problem. Verifications are carried out on rigid circular footings which are placed on and embedded in elastic half space. Numerical analysis is performed for a containment structure of a nuclear power plant subjected seismic excitation.

  • This study is conducted to examine the theoretical background of characteristics for electric shock encountered in special high-voltage electric lines among the accidents of electric shock, and to calculate applied current to human body and field strength over the head by means of numerical anaysis through FEM(Finite Element Method), and to make clear the hazard level to the human body, and to establish the approach limit distance of human body to the electric lines, which could be applied to the safety standard while working in the vicinity of special high-voltage electric lines.

  • The flow characteristics of developing turbulent steady flow are investigated numerically and experimentally in the entrance region of a square duct ($40 mm{\times}40 mm$ and 4, 000 mm). The numerical anaysis are incorporated by finite- volume discretization with staggered grid system and SIMPLE algorithm. The numerical solution are compared with experimental results of mean velocity profiles, turbulence intensity and entrance length. For turbulent steady flow, the turbulent components in the velocity waveforms increase as the dimensionless transverse position approaches the wall. Thrbulence intensity increases as the dimensionless transverse position increases from the center to the wall of the duct for the developing turbulent steady flows. The entrance length of the turbulent steady flow is about 40 times as large as the hydraulic diameter under the present experimental condition.

  • Structural analyses are preformed for the high pressure steam turbine casings of the nuclear and the fossil power plants. An axisymmetric boundary element program for analysis of the casings is developed and applied in the process of practical structural design. To show the useful-ness and accuracy of the developed program results of the analysis are compared with those of the finite element analysis under hydrostatic test pressure, To check the validity of the axisymmetric numerical analysis of the casings the stresses resulting from the hydrostatic test pressure are measured using the strain gate. The results of the numerical analyses are compared and discussed with those of the experiments.

  • Optical filters with graded index profiles are designed by applying the fourier transform to a riccati equation which governs the reflection and transmission characteristics of inhomogeneous refractive index distributions. The inhomogeneous refractive index profile of an optical filter with specified target spectrum is obtained through iterations. The spectra response of the inhomogeneous refractive index layers are analyzed by using runge-dutta numerical method to solve the differential euations of the amplitude and the phase of reflection coefficient derived from the riccati equation and the results are in good agreement with the resutls obtained by using matrix method.

  • Bellows is used to control temperature of a Joule-Thomson micro cryocooler. It is made of Nickelcobalt alloy that retains mechanical properties from cryogenic temperature to temperature of 570K. The geometry of bellows is an axisymmetric shell and Nitrogen with high pressure was charged at temperature of 293K. During cool-down process, the pressure and volume of Nitrogen are changed and must be satisfied with state equation. At cryogenic temperature, Nitrogen can exist as a part liquid and part vapor. Pressure-density-temperature behavior under this vaporliquid phase equilibrium is closely given by the Modified-Benedict-Webb-Rubin(MBWR) state equation. To evaluate deformation of bellows for temperature change, the numerical calculation of the volume within bellows and finite element analysis of bellows under internal pressure were iteratively performed until MBWR state equation is satisfied. The numerical results show that deformation of the bellows can be analyzed by the present method in a wide range of temperature including cryogenic temperature.

  • In this study, a numerical method for the material nonlinear analysis of reinforced concrete shell structures including the time dependent effects due to creep and shrinkage is developed. Degenerate shell elements with the layered approach are used. The perfect or strain hardening plasticity model in compression and the linearly elastic model in tension until cracking for concrete are employed. The reinforcing bars are considered as a steel layer of equivalent thickness. Each :steel layer has an uniaxial behaviour resisting only the axial force in the bar direction. A bilinear idealization is adopted to model elasto-plastic stress-strain relationships. For the nonlinear anaysis, incremental load method combined with unbalanced load iterations for each load increment is used. To include time dependent effects of concrete, time domain is divided into several time steps which may have different length. Some numerical examples are presented to study the validity and applicability of the present method. The results are compared with experimental and numerical results obtained by other investigator.

  • In this study the rigid-plastic finite element method is used in order to study the deformation characteristics of solid cylinder upsetting. The effects of friction and aspect ratios on the effective strain distribution, axial stresses at the die-material interface, radial displacements, strain components, grid distortion on the meridional cross-section and gradual changes of outer profile are studied analyzed and compared with the experiments for commercially pure aluminum and .alpha.-brass. The agreement between numerical (or theoretical)and experimental results is shown to be acceptable for the engineering purpose.
