  • Since Korea has excellent port infrastructure and competitive petrochemical complexes, there is plenty of potential for creating an oil hub in Northeast Asia. In particular, Ship-to-Ship (STS), which creates high added values, contributes greatly to the national economy. In this study, the liquid cargo volumes of chemical industrial products, refined petroleum products, and crude oil were analyzed at the national and regional (Busan, Ulsan, and Yeosu/Gwangyang) levels. Additionally, a Granger causality analysis was performed between imports, exports, and transshipments, in pairs. ADF, PP, and KPSS were analyzed for the unit root test. In addition, the VAR model and expanded VAR model suggested by Toda and Yamamoto were used for further analyses. Findings revealed a difference in Granger causality depending on the region or cargo type. These findings suggest that policies and incentive schemes for ports need to be differentiated according to the region and cargo types. In addition, the different patterns in the relationship between transshipments and import-export petrochemical cargoes should be considered.

  • Shipping and ports have important roles as the nodes and links in maritime logistics. The environment between shipping and ports is interrelated and has been changing' together. Recently, the changes of shipping and ports are rapidly in progress and it is expected to be developed complementarily. Especially, mega carriers reduce the number of ports of calls because the size of ships is becoming bigger and bigger and the 'hub and spokes' strategy is appeared. Therefore, the position of a hub port by the region has questioned This paper aims to research the competitive ports by the region on the basis of the patterns when mega carriers call at ports. Six regions, Far East, Southeast Asia, Northwest America, Northeast America, West Europe and Mediterranean, are organized for this research. According to the volume of cargoes, the top five ports of each region are analyzed. As a result, the competitive ports by the region are Shanghai, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, New York New Jersey, Rotterdam and Gioia Tauro.

  • The study started with the question, "Is Japan's normalization of nationalization a return to militarism?" Therefore, in order to analyze this, the characteristics of the international system after the inauguration of the Japanese Empire during World War I and World War II and the Abe's 2nd Cabinet in contemporary Japan were compared. Through this, there were some differences in the characteristics of the international system of the two periods, and as a result, it was intended to derive the differences between the two examples. During the prewar period of World War I, the militaristic Japanese Empire suffered great damage from the national pride of being the only power in Asia through the Paris Enhancement Conference, the Washington Navy Treaty, and the London Navy Treaty. However, the Western powers with colonies in Asia still existed in the region, so it was not possible to turn them into immediate power expansion. Meanwhile, World War II broke out in Europe. As a result, the Western powers had to focus on the whole of Europe, and the militaristic Japanese empire became a regional hegemony without missing the international system characteristic of "the hegemony." Unlike in the past militarism, Japan's case of pursuing common nationalization since 2012 has been carried out in the order of Northeast Asia in the composition of the "cold war" new cold war. In particular, Japan is attempting to transform itself into a normal state to strengthen the US-Japan alliance on a self-reliant level due to the lack of quantitative military power compared to the neighboring countries.

  • Busan Port has been facing critical situation in terms of container handling volume, especially growth rate of transshipment(T/S) container of the year of 2006 was at a standstill. Annual average growth rate of T/S container during the period of 2003 to 2006 slowed down to 7.7% while it recorded over 34% to the period of 1999 to 2002. It has mainly resulted from the change of circumstance of Northeast Asian ports, that is, firstly mega carriers' increasing direct call to Northern Chinese ports such as Qingdao, Tianjin and Dairen effected to T/S container volume of Busan port, secondly start to operate deep-water port of Shanghai, thirdly Japanese super hub port project to handle their local containers at domestic ports. This paper aims to analyze the T/S type of inter-routes and hub and spoke and statistical status of Busan port. The purpose of the paper is to propose new concept which is to attract T/S container utilizing hub port function of Busan port in Northeast Asia It is that mega carriers are given dedicated terminals to use Busan port as T/S base in the region.

  • Despite the existence of effective anthelmintics, parasitic infections remain a major public health problem in Southeast Asia, including Thailand. In rural communities, continuing infection is often reinforced by dietary habits that have a strong cultural basis and by poor personal hygiene and sanitation. This study presents a survey of the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections among the people in rural Thailand. The community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in villages in Khon Kaen Province, northeastern Thailand, from July to August 2013. A total of 253 stool samples from 102 males and 140 females, aged 2-80 years, were prepared using formalin-ethyl acetate concentration methods and examined using light microscopy. Ninety-four individuals (37.2%) were infected with 1 or more parasite species. Presence of parasitic infection was significantly correlated with gender (P=0.001); nearly half of males in this survey (49.0%) were infected. Older people had a higher prevalence than younger members of the population. The most common parasite found was Opisthorchis viverrini (26.9%), followed by Strongyloides stercoralis (9.5%), Taenia spp. (1.6%), echinostomes (0.4%), and hookworms (0.4%). The prevalence of intestinal protozoa was Blastocystis hominis 1.6%, Entamoeba histolytica 0.8%, Entamoeba coli 0.8%, Balantidium coli 0.4%, Iodamoeba b$\ddot{u}$tschlii 0.4%, and Sarcocystis hominis 0.4%. Co-infections of various helminths and protozoa were present in 15.9% of the people. The present results show that the prevalence of parasitic infections in this region is still high. Proactive education about dietary habits, personal hygiene, and sanitation should be provided to the people in this community to reduce the prevalence of intestinal parasite infections. Moreover, development of policies and programs to control parasites is needed.

  • The southern coastal area of Korean peninsula maintains unique natural views, social environment and tourism infrastructure. Even though the coastal area has world-class tourism resources and a great potential for development, it was an outsider from the tourism development in Korea. The coast development has recently reemerged because of increased tourism demand in the Northeast Asia, however, increased interest for the outstanding marine tourism resources and the marine culture, improvement of accessibility to the coast Considering these characteristics, the southern coastal area will be grown to a marine resort-belt, which will serve as a marine tourism hub in the Northeast. In the long run, it can be developed for leisure residential space with environment-friendly well-being fashion, new growing area that continuously drives the local development and area for a mutual development between Yeongnam and Honam Region. To accomplish this vision, several strategic matters should be resolved. Mall strategic issues are as follows: the loosening related rules and regulations that limit the development, legislation of a special law for tourism promotion, supporting for investment in public service and strategic investment, establishment of a marine tourism route connecting China-Korea-Japan, formulating new planning for Hallyo-Haesang Marine Park, designation of special marine tourism development zone, and invitation of the World Expo 2012.

  • This study was conducted on the assumption that for Incheon international airport to become the logistics hub of northeast asia's region, it is necessary to investigate and analyze problems of forwarder's international air cargo transportation process, those factors and so on. The conditions of the process of international air cargo transportation was analysed individually according to the time required, satisfaction and problems of each step of process by dividing those into import and export. Consequently it turned out that the time required for the export process of the international air cargo transportation is longer by about 1 hour than the import process which means the improvement of import section rather than export is more urgent to improve the overall international air cargo transportation process. For the improvement of the process, it is also necessary to construct the international air cargo transportation' information system, secure competition of operating and to improve logistics standardization by considering all factors above.

  • In order to spatially interpolate the near-surface temperature (Ta) values, satellite and reanalysis methods were used from previous studies. Accuracy of reanalysis Ta was generally better than that of satellite-based Ta, but spatial resolution of reanalysis Ta was large to use at local scale studies. Our purpose is to evaluate accuracy of reanalysis Ta and satellite-based Ta according to elevation from April 2011 to March 2012 in Northeast Asia that includes various topographic features. In this study, we used reanalysis data that is ERA-Interim produced by European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), and estimated satellite-based Ta using Digital Elevation Meter (DEM), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), difference between brightness temperature of $11{\mu}m$ and $12{\mu}m$, and Land Surface Temperature (LST) data. The DEM data was used as auxiliary data, and observed Ta at 470 meteorological stations was used in order to evaluate accuracy. We confirmed that the accuracy of satellite-based Ta was less accurate than that of ERA-Interim Ta for total data. Results of analyzing according to elevation that was divided nine cases, ERA-Interim Ta showed higher accurate than satellite-based Ta at the low elevation (less than 500 m). However, satellite-based Ta was more accurate than ERA-Interim Ta at the higher elevation from 500 to 3500 m. Also, the width of the upper and lower quartile appeared largely from 2500 to 3500 m. It is clear from these results that ERA-Interim Ta do not consider elevation because of large spatial resolution. Therefore, satellite-based Ta was more effective than ERA-Interim Ta in the regions that is range from 500 m to 3500 m, and satellite-based Ta was recommended at a region of above 2500 m.

  • We measured the concentrations of five aromatic hydrocarbons (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, m,p-xylene, and styrene) in the atmosphere during four seasonal campaigns at Deokjeok and Jeju Islands in the Yellow Sea from October 2005 to June 2006. Toluene was the most abundant aromatic hydrocarbon, with median of 0.24 ppb at Deokjeok and 0.20 ppb at Jeju, followed by benzene (0.21 ppb, 0.15 ppb) and m,p-xylene (0.06 ppb, 0.06 ppb). Aromatic hydrocarbon measurements exhibited the typical seasonality of the major emission sources, such as vehicle exhaust, solvent evaporation, and regional circulation patterns. The ratios of m,p-xylene/ethylbenzene of 1.57 at Deokjeok and 1.05 at Jeju reflected the degree of proximity to outflows of each source region, South Korea and China. The toluene/benzene ratios of 1.0 were consistently both on field observations and on the 3-D chemical model simulation, which is slightly higher than that in the Western Pacific area. It implied that the air over the Yellow Sea was influenced to a great extent by the surrounding areas. We confirmed that current emission inventories of aromatic hydrocarbons in Northeast Asia reasonably reproduced temporal and spatial variations of toluene and benzene over the Yellow Sea.

  • A giant jellyfish (Nemopilema nomurai), which is presumed developing in the East China Sea, is recently one of major issues in the Northeast Asia region due to its fatal damage to the fishery. The biomass estimates have generally been conducted by trawl sampling and sighting survey methods. The biological research is also needed to clarify such environmental origin or diurnal migration patterns. While trawl sampling or sighting survey methods are effective to investigate its density estimates in its distributed community of near bottom or surface, they have a problem in investigation on the vertical distribution of jellyfishes. In this case, an echo sounding detection would have an advantage to survey it more extensively and effectively. This trial was conducted to observe the vertical distribution of giant jellyfish, where thermocline strongly formed, during mooring at each station of the East China Sea and southern coastal area using acoustical and optical methods. By the results, they were observed to exit and move at the water column under the thermocline using the optical camera and echo sounder system, and the information was analyzed to find out the acoustical sound scattering characteristics relatives to 120kHz frequency. These results can be utilized effectively to estimate the vertical distribution and biomass of Giant jellyfish with comparing results from trawl sampling and sighting survey methods, hereafter.
