  • In this work, effects of hyper-elastic rubber material properties on the indentation load-deflection curve and subindenter deformation are examined via finite element (FE) analyses. An optimal location for data analysis is selected, which features maximum strain energy density and negligible frictional effect. We then contrive two normalized functions, which map an indentation load vs. deflection curve into a strain energy density vs. first invariant curve. From the strain energy density vs. first invariant curve, we can extract the rubber material properties. This new spherical indentation approach produces the rubber material properties in a manner more effective than the common uniaxial tensile/com-pression tests. The indentation approach successfully measures the rubber material properties and the corresponding nominal stress-strain curve with an average error less than 3%.

  • This paper focuses on the unsteady close-contact melting phenomenon occurring between a phase change material kept at its melting temperature and a flat surface on which constant heat flux is imposed. Based on the same simplifications and framework of analysis as the case of constant surface temperature, an approximate analytical solution which depends only on the liquid-to-solid density ratio is successfully derived. In order to keep consistency with the known solution procedure, both the dimensionless wall heat flux and the Stefan number are properly redefined. The obtained solution proves to agree quite well with the published numerical data and to be capable of resolving the fundamental features of unsteady close-contact melting, especially in the presence of the solid-liquid density difference. The density ratio directly affects the film growth rate and the initial value of solid descending velocity, thereby controlling the duration of unsteady process. The effects of other parameters can be evaluated readily from the steady solution which is implied in the normalized result. Since the dimensionless surface temperature for the present boundary condition increases from zero to unity along the evolution path of the liquid film thickness, the unsteady process lasts longer than that for the case of isothermal heating.

  • Superconducting properties of thin film MgB2 superconductors irradiated with 45 MeV ${\alpha}$-particle beam were studied. After the irradiation, enhancement of the critical current density and pinning force was observed, scaling close to strong pinning formula. Double logarithmic plots of the maximum pinning force density with irreversible magnetic field show a power law behavior close to carbon-doped MgB2 film or polycrystals. Variation of normalized pinning force density in the reduced magnetic field suggests scaling formulas for strong pinning mechanism like planar defects. We also observed a rapid decay of critical current density as the vortex lattice constant decreases, due to the strong interaction between vortices and increasing magnetic field.

  • In an effort to learn more about the reaction mechanisms which lead to the compound nucleation at the interface of cobalt and silicon, electrical noise properties has been investigated for cobalt thin films deposited on silicon substrates by the electron beam evaporation and rf sputtering techniques. Microstructural variations at the Co/Si interfaces have been observed by transmission electronmicroscopy. Amorphous structures are observed at the Co/Si interfaces for samples whose cobalt thicknesses are less than 4nm and a polycrystalline compound nucleation has been occurred for thicker films. 1/f noise power same samples, and the spetral density has been normalized. The amplitude of 1/f noise power spectral density shows a gradual increase as the cobalt thickness is increased, and the amplitude has dropped abruptly after the compound nucleation. The variations of the noise parameters areassumed to be an indiction of the phase transformation along the nucleation reaction path, and amplitude has been interpreted as instabilities of the Co/Si interfacial structures.

  • An experimental study on energy density distributions produced by dish solar concentrating system was performed to optimally design and rightly position a cavity receiver. This deemed also very useful to find and correct various errors associated with a concentrator. It is observed that the actual focal length is 2.17 m with a maximum energy density of 1.89 MW/$m^2$. By evaluating the position of flux centroid, it was found that there are errors within 2 cm from the target center. As a result of the percent power within radius, approximately 90% of the incident radiation is intercepted by about 0.06 m radius. The area concentration ratio normalized to 800 W/$m^2$ insolation and 90% mirror reflectivity was 347 suns. The total integrated power of 2467 W was measured under focal flux distributions, which corresponds to the intercept rate of 85.8%.

  • AC loss is an important factor in the development of superconducting tapes and superconducting power applications. In this paper we measured and compared characteristics of BSCCO tape and YBCO Coated Conductor(YBCO CC). BSCCO tape was fabricated by PIT method. We measured critical current density and transport current loss of it. Also, YBCO CC tape consist of substrate. buffer, YBCO and metal layers. We measured critical current density on variations of external magnetic field and transport current loss of these cases. The results of measurement show that normalized critical current of YBCO CC is smaller then that of BSCCO tape in the external magnet field. According to the results. measured loss and calculated of the YBCO CC show the same tendency.

  • Among many dimensional and dimensionless amplitude parameters, kurtosis (4-th normalized moment of probability density function) is generally regarded as a sensitive good parameter for machine diagnosis. However, higher order moment may be supposed to be much more sensitive. Bicoherence is an absolute deterioration factor whose range is 1 to 0. The theoretical value of n-th moment divided by n-th moment calculated by measured data would behave in the same way. We propose a simplified calculation method for an absolute index of n-th moment and name this as simplified absolute index of n-th moment. Some favorable results are obtained.

  • We present a MEMS-based portable Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (micro-DFMC), featured by a platinum sputtered microcolumn electrode and a built-in fuel chamber containing a limited amount of methanol fuel. Also presented is a micro-DMFC stack structure having a common electrolyte sandwiched by the microcolumn electrodes. The single cells with ME16 and PE16 electrodes show the maximum power densities of $31.04{\pm}0.29{\mu}W/cm^2$ and $9.75{\pm}0.29{\mu}W/cm^2$, respectively; thus indicating the microcolumn electrode (ME16) generates the power density (3.2 times) higher than the planar electrode (PE16). The single cell tests of ME16 and ME4 electrodes (Fig.8) show the maximum power of $31.04{\pm}0.29{\mu}W/cm^2$, and $25.23{\pm}2.7{\mu}W/cm^2$, respectively; thus demonstrating the increased window frame reduces the normalized standard power deviation (standard deviation over the average power). The normalized deviation of 0.11 in ME4 cell has been reduced to 0.01 in ME16 cell due to the increased window frames. The maximum power density of 4-cell stack is 15.7 times higher than that of the single cell. 4-cell stack produces the power capacity of 20.3mWh/g during 980min operation at the voltage of 450mV with the load resistance of $800{\Omega}$.

  • Objectives : In this study, aged BCAO rats were used to observe the effect of Bupleuri Radix on brain ischemic injury because aging is an important factor in storke. Methods : The brain ischemic injury was induced by temporary closing carotids on both sides in a low blood pressure state, and Bupleuri Radix was orally administered to 18 month-old BCAO rats. The ischemic damaged hippocampus and c-Fos and c-Jun expression were analyzed by the immunohistochemical staining. Result and Conclusions : Results are summarized as fellows; 1. The c-Fos expression after inducing a brain ischemic injury in the hippocampus was more inhibited in the experimental group than in the control group. 2. The normalized optical density of c-Fos expression was more reduced in cornu ammonis(CA)1, dentate gyrus(DG) areas in the experimental group than in the control group. 3. The c-Jun expression after inducing a brain ischemic injury in the hippocampus was more inhibited in the experimental group than in the control group. 4. The normalized optical density of c-Jun expression was more reduced in CA1 and DG areas in the experimental group than in the control group.
