The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is an association between disk displacement of the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) and dentofacial asymmetry In orthodontic patients. The subjects consisted of 60 female orthodontic patients between the ages of 18 and 38 years (mean age 23.3 years) who had visited the Department of Orthodontics at Seoul National University Dental Hospital from January 2000 to April 2002. On the basis of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of their bilateral TMJs, the subjects were divided Into four groups'. bilateral normal group (twenty-one persons); disk displacement of right TMJ group (six persons); disk displacement of left TMJ group (nine persons); and disk displacement of both TMJs group (twenty-four persons) Postero-anterior (PA) cephalograms and diagnostic models which had been taken before orthodontic treatment were measured. In the linear measurements, a line connecting the right and left Latero-Orbitale (Lo) represented the horizontal reference line (H). The vertical reference line (V) was constructed as a line bisecting and running perpendicular to H. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to test whether the mean values of measurements between groups were significantly different. In addition, Bonferronil's multiple comparison test was performed at a level of 0.05. The results were as follows; 1 In the diagnostic model analysis, the overjet, nght molar relationship, and left molar relationship were significantly different among the four groups. 2. In the PA cephalometric analysis, differences in the right and left vertical position of the lower first molar and Ag were significantly dissimilar among the four groups. 3. If the disk displacement of TMJ was present on one side, the ipsilateral ramus was shorter, resulting in asymmetry in the vertical position of Ag. This study indicated that dentofacial asymmetry might be related to the disk displacement of TMJ.
From the previous studies, F-P-4 formula was found to be comparable to full fat dry milk in its nutritive value and feeding performance. However, an attempt was made in order to make sure whether or not any possibility might exist, by which further improvement of nutritive quality and simultaneous reduction of product costs may be achieved. Using F-P-4 as a control, modifications were made in new formulas, F-P-5, F-P-6 and F-P-7 by reducing FPC, eliminating yeast from the mixture, and by enriching with methionine as needed. In particular, F-P-7 is completely free of FPC, hydrogenated oil and yeast. Yet, levels of total protein and fat were kept equal to those of F-P-4 in all formulas. An animal feeding test for all formulas using 10 female rats per group for 8 weeks and an infant feeding trial for F-P-5 and F-P-6 with 5 of each female infants under age of one for one month were conducted along with F-P-4 as a control. Almost the same results were obtained with F-P-4, 5 and 6, but F-P-7 showed the lowest body weight gain. FER of F-P-5 and 6 was 0.20 as was with F-P-4, while that of F-P-7 was 0.16. Acceptability to infants was excellent; growth, appearance and biochemical data were normal. As an example F-P-4 packed in 0.04mm polyethylene bags was used for storage study at $25^{\circ}C$ and relative humidity of $65{\sim}85%$ for 8 months. Although viable bacterial counts and vitamin C contents were reduced, peroxide and TBA values were increased gradually during such storage. Since there are also significant changes in color and organoleptic quality, the expected shelf life under the given conditions is considered to be about 2 months and thus further works are needed both on the product and packaging in order to improve the storage stability. Either elimination of yeast form F-P-4, that is F-P-5, or partial replacement of FPC with methionine, that is F-P-6 may well reduce material costs about 10%. Considering blending process of ingredients, F-P-5 is thus found to be the best formula developed. While F-P-7 free of FPC is inferior in its nutritive quality than that of others, but significantly superior than of rice. Furthermore, the material cost of the product can be reduced about 20% from that of F-P-4. And thus this vegetable blend is considered to be useful as a low cost supplementary food mixture for growing children.
The purpose of this study was to perform a clinical test using ez NANOsence II RGP contact lenses for the effects of visual acuity and cornea on subjects with abnormal refraction status. One hundred twenty one adults (twenty nine males, ninety two females, range = 17 to 43, mean = 22.86) were recorded. The subject's history including, the symptoms from previous lens wear, were studied. The subjects were observed, both pre and post lens wear, for any symptoms and signs of change of the eye. The Visual acuity and the binocular status were tested at the far distance using the contact lens. The refraction test was performed on the naked eye using the objective method (Topcon KR-8100, Japan). The Stereopsis test was performed at the near distance after contact lens wear by the Titmus fly (Stereo Optical Co., U.S.A) and TNO (TECH, The netherlands). The contrast sensitivity diagnosis was performed at 1m distance after contact lens wear by the contrast sensitivity chart (pelli-Robertson, USA). The corneal topography was analyzed on the naked eye after lens wear by ORB scan (Bausch Lomb, U.S.A.). The ultra structure of surface on the contact lens was observed using SEM (JMS-5800, Japan). The chemical component's of the contact lens was analyzed by EDS program. The results of this study were as follows: 1. The longer of contact lens wear period, The subjects have acquired the most improved visual function. 2. Subjects had experienced few side effects wearing the contact lenses. 3. The lenses were easy to use by the subjects. 4. The longer of contact lens wear period, the power of cornea had more decrease. but the base curve of cornea had more increase and corneal astigmatism was decrease (p<0.01). Also, the thickness of corneal center was few decrease. 5. Longer periods of using the contact lens showed stereopsis and contrast sensitivity at more normal values. 6 The corneal topographical after lens wear showed most subjects with similar morphology for different wear periods. 7. The surface ultrastructure of the new and used contact lens was the similar fine shape. 8. The chemical component's of in the new and used contact appeared to have similar results. In conclusion, this study showed that the surface ultrastructure and chemical component's of the new and used contact lens are similar. In addition, the subjects had improved the quality of vision and few experienced any side effects during long periods of contact lens wear. Also they have decrease of corneal astigmatism during the long period of lens wear. Our test has showed that the chemical composition and fine structure of contact lens have related to the visual function on contact lens wearer. In this paper, we suggested that ez NANOsence II RGP contact lenses had a moderate effect for correcting vision of abnormal refraction eye.

The purpose of this study was to investigate anthropometric values, serum biochemical levels and their correlation in elementary school children. The subjects were 98 boys and girls in the $4{\~}6$ grade and divided into three groups by body size. The mean height of under-weight group (boys: $14.9\pm7.8\;cm$, girls: $144.9\pm9.6\;cm$) was the highest of the groups. The systolic and diastolic blood pressure of all the groups ranged from $111.56\pm13.51\;mmHg/72.86\pm7.26\;mmHg\;to\;117.50\pm10.00\;mmHg/75.31\pm9.51\;mmHg$, all within the normal levels. As subject was fatter, serum concentrations of triglyceride, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol insulin and atherogenic index (AI) in the boys, and serum concentrations of triglyceride, insulin and AI in the girls were significantly higher The concentrations of serum glucose, insulin, triglyceride, total cholesterol and LDL- cholesterol were significantly positively correlated with BMI and WHR. No significant correlation was found with blood pressure and serum lipid concentrations. Serum insulin levels was significantly positively correlated with serum glucose and triglyceride concentrations. Thus, this study implicates that obesity in childhood may be relevant to hyperlipidemia, atherosclerosis and diabetes mellitus.

This study was conducted to determine the effect of fermented water extracts from Ligularia fischeri (LAF) on reduction of hepatotoxicity induced by D-galactosamine (D-GalN) in rats. In this experiment, male Sprague-Dawley rats were used as experimental animals, which were divided into eight groups: normal group, D-GalN-treated group (control), D-GalN and non-fermented water extracts from Ligularia fischeri (LA)-treated groups [100, 200, and 400 mg/kg BW (body weight)], and D-GalN and LAF-treated groups (100, 200, and 400 mg/kg BW). ${\gamma}$-Glutamyl transferase, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, and lactate dehydrogenase activities in serum of the D-GalN and LAF-treated groups decreased significantly compared to those of the control group (P<0.05). The high density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels of the D-GalN and LAF-treated groups increased significantly compared to those of the control group (P<0.05). The low density lipoprotein-cholesterol and triglyceride levels of the D-GalN and LAF-treated groups decreased significantly compared to those of the control group (P<0.05). The atherogenic index values of the D-GalN and LAF-treated groups decreased significantly compared to those of the control group (P<0.05), and their high density lipoprotein cholesterol by total cholesterol ratio increased significantly in these groups (P<0.05). Superoxide dismutase activity of liver tissues were enhanced significantly (P<0.05) in the D-GalN and LAF-treated groups compared to that of the control group (P<0.05), whereas their malondialdehyde content decreased significantly in these groups (P<0.05). The histopathological observations revealed apoptotic cells and mild portal inflammation in liver tissues of the D-GalN and LAF-treated groups. Taken together, these results demonstrate that LAF may improve plasma lipid profile and alleviate hepatic damage.
This study was carried out to elucidate the time course variation of vitamin $D_{3}$ (V$D_{3}$) and 25-hydroxyvitamin $D_{3}$ [25(OH)$D_{3}$] contents in the liver and skeleton of 3-wk old broiler chicks when treated with different UV irradiation procedure. Day-old Hubbard chicks were fed vitamin D deficient diet for 3 wk and exposed to medium wave ultraviolet(UVB) light with different irradiation procedures. Procedure I was 30 min continuous irradiation(O.204 mJ /$cm^{2}$) and Procedure II was three seperate 10 min irradiation with 12 h intervals, and Procedure III was three seperate 10 min irradiation with 24 h intervals. The liver and skeleton samples were collected at 10 different times between 0000~2400 h after the last irradiation. The V$D_{3}$ and 25(OH)$D_{3}$ fractions wereseparated by Sep-Pak silica cartridge and the concentrations were determined by normal phase HPLC. The mean content of V$D_{3}$ in the liver of the birds treated by Procedure II was 6.68 ng /g, which was higher than 5.60 and 5.30 ng /g from Procedure I and Ill, respectively(P<.O5). With regard to the effect of elapsed time after UVB irradiation on the V$D_{3}$ concentration of the liver, 96 h treatment showed the highest value(13.08 ng/g)(P<.05). There was a significant(P$D_{3}$ were significantly(P$D_{3}$ in the skeleton of tibia and femur, there were no significant differences among Procedure I, II and III, but significant differences were found among those from various elapsed time after irradiation, The highest value was shown at 96 h(O.99 ng /g) treatment, and interaction between irradiation procedure and elapsed time was not significant. With regard to the mean content of 25(OH)$D_{3}$ in bone, the Procedure II(18.79 ng /g) and III(17.73 ng /g) showed higher values than Procedure I did (P<.05), and the 12 h elapsed time showed the highest value(31.17 ng /g) among 10 treatments (P<.05), however, there was no significant interaction between exposing procedure and elapsed time. In conclusion, the Procedure II would he more desirable than Procedure I or III to produce more V$D_{3}$ and 25(OH)$D_{3}$ in the liver and skeleton of birds by exposing to the UVB light. Also, it was verified that 25(OH)$D_{3}$ increases more quickly than V$D_{3}$ in both tissues tested and is utilized more quickly to recover from the rickets of chicks.
Hydraulic conductivity along rock fracture is mainly dependent on fracture geometries such as orientation, aperture, roughness and connectivity. Therefore, it needs to consider fracture geometries sufficiently on a fracture model for a numerical analysis to calculate permeability coefficient in a fracture. This study performed new type of numerical analysis using a homogenization analysis method to calculate permeability coefficient accurately along single fractures with several fracture models that were considered fracture geometries as much as possible. First of all, fracture roughness and aperture variation due to normal stress applied on a fracture were directly measured under a confocal laser scaning microscope (CLSM). The acquired geometric data were used as input data to construct fracture models for the homogenization analysis (HA). Using the constructed fracture models, the homogenization analysis method can compute permeability coefficient with consideration of material properties both in microscale and in macroscale. The HA is a new type of perturbation theory developed to characterize the behavior of a micro inhomogeneous material with a periodic microstructure. It calculates micro scale permeability coefficient at homogeneous microscale, and then, computes a homogenized permeability coefficient (C-permeability coefficient) at macro scale. Therefore, it is possible to analyze accurate characteristics of permeability reflected with local effect of facture geometry. Several computations of the HA were conducted to prove validity of the HA results compared with the empirical equations of permeability in the previous studies using the constructed 2-D fracture models. The model can be classified into a parallel plate model that has fracture roughness and identical aperture along a fracture. According to the computation results, the conventional C-permeability coefficients have values in the range of the same order or difference of one order from the permeability coefficients calculated by an empirical equation. It means that the HA result is valid to calculate permeability coefficient along a fracture. However, it should be noted that C-permeability coefficient is more accurate result than the preexisting equations of permeability calculation, because the HA considers permeability characteristics of locally inhomogeneous fracture geometries and material properties both in microscale and macroscale.
Purpose : Radiation-induced alteration in the immune function is well known phenomenon in cancer patients. Our purpose is to evaluate the extent of immune suppression immediately after mediastinal or pelvic irradiation, which include significant volume of active bone marrow in adults. Materials and Methods'48 cancer patients with mediastinal(N=29) and pelvic irradiation(N=19) were the basis of this analysis. Age ranged from 36 to 76 and mean and median value was 57 years, respectively Sex ratio was 1.3(M: F=27/21). The immunological parameters were the complete blood cell(CBC) with differential cell(D/C) count, T cell subset(CD3, CD4, CD8 CDl9), NK cell test(CDl6, CD56), and serum immunoglobulin(IgG, IgA, IgM) level. Results : The mean value of white blood cell(WBC) was reduced from 7017 to 4470 after irradiation(p=0.0000). In the differential count, the number of lymphocyte, neutrophil, and basophil was markedly reduced with statistical significance(p<0.01) and the number of monocyte was not changed and, on the contrary, that of eosinophil was increased by irradiation. In the lymphocyte subpopulation analysis, the number of all subpopulations, CD3(T cell), CD4(helper T cell), CD8(suppressor T cell), CDl6(NK cell), CDl9(B, cell) was reduced with statistical significance. The mean ratio of CD4 to CD8 in all patients was 1.09 initially and reduced to 0.99 after radiotherapy(p=0.34) , but the proportional percentage of all subpopulations was not changed except CD19(B cell) after irradiation. In the immunoglobulin study, initial values of Ig G, Ig A, and Ig M were relatively above the normal range and the only Ig M was statistically significantly reduced after radiotherapy(p=0.02). Conclusion : Mediastinal and pelvic irradiation resulted in remarkable suppression of lymphocyte count in contrast to the relatively good preservation of other components of white blood cells. But the further study on the functional changes of lymphocyte after radiotherapy may be necessary to conclude the effects of the radiation on the immunity of the cancer Patients.
Purpose: Vasospasm is a complication of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). We assessed the role of acetazolamide-enhanced brain perfusion SPECT (ACZ-SPECT) with Tc-99m ECD for predicting the prognosis of patients with aSAH. Materials and methods: Two SPECT studios (baseline with 740 MBq and ACZ-SPECT with 1480 MBq) with image subtraction were performed in 21 patients with aSAH. All patients had brain CT and angiogram. Vasoreactivity on ACZ-SPECT, perfusion defect on baseline SPECT, and vasospasm on angiogram were correlated with Hunt-Hess grading, extent of SAH (unilateral or bilateral) on CT, and clinical outcome. Vasoreactivity was considered decreased when cerebral/cerebellar uptake ratio difference from baseline SPECT to ACZ-SPECT was greater than 2SD of normal control values. Results: Decreased vasoreactivity was observed in 38% (8/21), perfusion defect in 81% (17/21), and vasospasm in 38% (8/21). The preserved vasoreactivity group showed better outcome scale (92%, 12/13) and the decreased vasoreactivity group showed poorer outcome scale (62.5%, 5/8) (p=0.014). Extensive SAH was more frequently seen in the decreased vasoreactlvlty group (87.5%, 7/8) than in the preserved vasoreactivity group (30.7%, 4/13)(p=0.017). The perfusion defect and vasospasm did not show good correlation with outcome scale, extent of SAH, and Hunt-Hess grading (p=ns). Vasoreactivity represented the patient's outcome better than the vasospasm in all of the vasoreactivity/vasospasm-mismatched cases (6 cases). Conclusions: Our data show that decreased vasoreactivity on ACZ-SPECT does not always represent vasospastic condition. But patients with decreased vasoreactivity reveal poorer outcome than patients with angiographic vasospasm do. Therefore ACZ-SPECT is a valuable, noninvasive test for predicting the prognosis of patients with aSAH.
Purpose: We investigated the statistical methods to compose the functional brain map of human working memory and the principal factors that have an effect on the methods for localization. Materials and Methods: Repeated PET scans with successive four tasks, which consist of one control and three different activation tasks, were performed on six right-handed normal volunteers for 2 minutes after bolus injections of 925 MBq $H_2^{15}O$ at the intervals of 30 minutes. Image data were analyzed using SPM96 (Statistical Parametric Mapping) implemented with Matlab (Mathworks Inc., U.S.A.). Images from the same subject were spatially registered and were normalized using linear and nonlinear transformation methods. Significant difference between control and each activation state was estimated at every voxel based on the general linear model. Differences of global counts were removed using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) with global activity as covariate. Using the mean and variance for each condition which was adjusted using ANCOVA, t-statistics was performed on every voxel To interpret the results more easily, t-values were transformed to the standard Gaussian distribution (Z-score). Results: All the subjects carried out the activation and control tests successfully. Average rate of correct answers was 95%. The numbers of activated blobs were 4 for verbal memory I, 9 for verbal memory II, 9 for visual memory, and 6 for conjunctive activation of these three tasks. The verbal working memory activates predominantly left-sided structures, and the visual memory activates the right hemisphere. Conclusion: We conclude that rCBF PET imaging and statistical parametric mapping method were useful in the localization of the brain regions for verbal and visual working memory.
