Effect of Inlet Direction on the Refrigerant Distribution in an Aluminum Flat-Tube Heat Exchanger

  • The refrigerant R-134a flow distributions are experimentally studied for a round header/ten flat tube test section simulating a brazed aluminum heat exchanger. Three different inlet orientations(parallel, normal, vertical) were investigated. Tests were conducted with downward flow for the mass flux from 70 to 130 $kg/m^2s$ and quality from 0.2 to 0.6. In the test section, tubes were flush-mounted with no protrusion into the header. It is shown that normal and vertical inlet yielded approximately similar flow distribution. At high mass fluxes or high qualities, however, slightly better results were obtained for normal inlet configuration. The flow distribution was worst for the parallel inlet configuration. Possible explanation is provided based on flow visualization results.

  • This work is concerned mainly with the variational problem on an immersion x:M $\rightarrow$} $E^4$ . A new approach is introduced depends on the normal variation in any arbitrary normal direction in the normal bundle. The results of this work are considered as a continuation and an extension to that obtained in [1], [2] and [3], [4] respectively. The methods adapted here are based on Cartan's methods of moving frames and the calculus of variations.

Dynamic Characteristics of Truss-Type Lift Gate According to Installation Direction (트러스형 리프트 게이트의 설치방향에 따른 진동 특성)

  • This study examined the dynamic characteristics of the gate to identify the optimal gate installation direction according to the installation direction. A 1:31 scale model was constructed for a 47.5m prototype gate using acrylic. The scaled weights were tuned by adding lead weights. The first step was to measure the natural frequencies of the model gates, and compare them with finite-element analysis of the prototypes as a calibration. The scaled model was tested in a 1.6 m wide concrete flume for two orientations to determine the effects of the gate orientation on structural vibrations. Vertical vibrations were measured under a range of operational conditions, including a range of bottom opening heights and different upstream and downstream water levels. For large bottom opening heights in the normal direction, relatively large vibrations were induced by vortices shed at the plate bottom that would strike the horizontal truss member. This phenomenon was avoided in the reverse direction. For small bottom opening heights in the normal direction, these vibrations were caused by a suction force that developed at the gate bottom. The gate model in the reverse direction was preferred because of its low overall vibrational response under general gate opening and flow level combinations.

Characteristics of in-cylinder flow near the spark-plug for different engine speeds (엔진속도 변화에 따른 연소실내 Spark Plug 주위의 유동특성 고찰)

  • Flows in the combustion chamber near the spark plug are measured using LDv.A single cylinder DOHC S.I. engine of compression ratio 9.5:1 with a transparent quartz window piston is used. Combustion chamber shape is semi-wedge type. Measured data are analyzed using the ensemble averaged analysis and the cycle resolved analysis which uses FFT Filtering. Turbulent intensity and mean velocity are studied in the main flow direction and the normal to main flow direction as a function of engine speeds. The results shows that the turbulent intensity obtained by the ensemble averaged analysis is greater than that calculated by the cycle resolved analysis. Especially, the ensemble averaged analysis shows increase in turbulence at the end of compression stroke although the cycle resolved analysis shows increase only in the cycle-by-cycle variation with no noticeable increase in turbulence. The mean velocity in the main flow direction increase as engine speed increase. But the mean velocity normal to the main flow does not show such increase. Turbulent intensity in both direction increase in proportion to engine speeds. The magnitude of turbulent intensity is about 0.3 ~ 0.4 times the mean piston speeds at the end of the compression stroke.

Effects of the Whisker Orientation and Sintering Temperature on Mechanical Properties of the Si$_3$N$_4$ based Composites (Si$_3$N$_4$ Whisker의 배열방향과 소결온도가 Si$_3$N$_4$ 복합체의 기계적 성질에 미치는 영향)

  • Gas pressure sintered silicon nitride based composites with 3 wt% $\beta$-Si3N4 whiskers were prepared and change of properties according to the whisker orientation and sintering temperature was studied. The tapes with whiskers were fabricated by two different method ; conventional tape casting and a modified tape casting by using guide pins,. Orientations of the whiskers were controlled by different stacking sequences of the sheets cut from the tape. Samples were fully densified by gas pressure sintering at 2148-2273K. As the sintering temperature increased size of the large elongated grains increased. In case of unidirectional samples sintering shrinkage normal to the whisker alignment direction was larger than that of parallel to the direction and the shrinkage anisotropy increased slightly as sintering temperature increased. As sintering temperature increased the crack length parallel to whisker alignment direction became shorter but that normal to the direction did not depend on sintering temperature. In case of cross-plied samples the anisotropy of mechanical properties disappeared.

A Study on the Mechanical and Hand Properties of Knitted Fabrics - Focused on the 2 Colors Jacquard - (편성물의 역학적 특성과 태 평가 - 2 칼라 자카드를 중심으로-)

  • The results of comparison and analysis of dynamical features according to Jacquard structure are as follows. Regarding elongation(E) value in tensile property, the value in the direction of course was found to be larger in all Jacquard structure, except floating Jacquard, than the direction of wale. It could be found that, as to bending strength(B) in Bending Property, the value of bending strength in the direction of course smaller in all the textile(structure) except floating than the direction of wale, so that the ability of curve formation is excellent. And in case of floating Jacquard, it showed the smallest value in the direction of course and wale, so that it was interpreted as Jacquard having a soft feel. Blister Jacquard showed the highest value in both directions of course and wale, so that it was evaluated as Jacquard having the hardest touch. With regard to shearing character(G) and shearing hysteresis(2HG) in Shearing Property, Jacquard indicated the lowest value, so it was evaluated as the textile(structure) having high drape the transformation of whose fabric is easy. In addition, normal Jacquard, transfer Jacquard, blister Jacquard showed a high value, so that it could be known they are Jacquards having stiff touch. The study implies that normal Jacquard, bird's eye Jacquard, etc., which well stretch in the direction of a course like tubular Jacquard course, is better to make the margin a little shorter than the basic margin, and Jacquard that well stretches in the direction of wale like ladder's back Jacquard and floating Jacquard is better to make the margin longer and the length shorter than the basic margin.

  • In this paper, we study the location of zeros and Borel direction for the solutions of linear homogeneous differential equations $$f^{(n)}+A_{n-1}(z)f^{(n-1)}+{\cdots}+A_1(z)f#+A_0(z)f=0$$ with entire coefficients. Results are obtained concerning the rays near which the exponent of convergence of zeros of the solutions attains its Borel direction. This paper extends previous results due to S. J. Wu and other authors.

  • The dispersion of Lagrangian fluid particles in a turbulent channel flow is studied by a direct numerical simulation. Four points Hermite interpolation in the homogeneous direction and Chebyshev polynomials in the inhomogeneous direction is adopted by assesing the acceleration of fluid particles. In order to characterize the inhomogeneous Lagrangian statistics, accurate single particle Lagrangian statistics are obtained along the wall normal direction. Integral time scales of Lagrangian velocity can be normalized by Eulerian mean shear stresses.
