  • This study describes that electrical breakdown of liquid nitrogen which is influenced with bubble has been investigated as liquid nitrogen is used coolant of high temperature(T/sub c/) superconductivity. In order to investigate breakdown of liquid nitrogen, we formed electrode system of parallel and vertical configuration toward gravitutional direction. In case of changing with electrode configuration of equal electrode and gap spacing in uniform and nonuniform electric field bubble behavior is changed. In result of that, breakdown voltage is changed. Therefore, this study proved that electrode configuration must be formed the smallest existing probability of bubble between two electrodes in order to increase breakdown strength of liquid nitrogen at atmosphere pressure.

  • In this study, a relationship between partial discharge and the radiated electromagnetic waves is investigated by measuring electromagnetic waves using a biconical antenna and a spectrum analyzer. The patterns of frequency spectrum of radiated electromagnetic waves measured at the atmospheric pressure in Liquid Nitrogen($LN_2$) during the partial discharges in nonuniform electric field depend on positive DC power. From these points of view. it is considered that these results obtained from this investigation may be used as fundamental data for diagnosis and prediction of insulation on the equipments of superconducting and cryogenic applications.

  • Similarity and diversity of various quantum ring structures are investigated by classifying energy dispersions of three different structures: an electrostatic quantum ring, a magnetic quantum ring, and a magnetic-electric quantum ring. The wave functions and the eigenenergies of a single electron in the quantum ring structures are calculated by solving the Schrdinger equation without any electron-electron interaction. Magnetoconductance is studied by calculating a two-terminal conductance while taking into account the backscattering via the resonance through the states of the quantum rings at the center of a quasi-one dimensional conductor. It is found that the energy spectra for the various quantum ring structures are sensitive to additional electrostatic potentials as well as to the effects of a nonuniform magnetic field. There are also characteristics of similarity and diversity in the energy dispersions and in the single-channel magnetoconductance.

  • In this paper, new Partial Discharge (PD) detection technique using Pockels-cell was proposed. For this purpose, PD was generated from needle-plane electrode in air and detected by optical measuring system using Pockets cell, based on Mach-Zehnder interferometer, consisting of He-Ne laser, single mode optical fiber, 50/50 beam splitter and photo detector. We show the characteristic of the proto-type sensor for the corona discharge.

  • We investigated the breakdown characteristic of mineral oil according to applied voltage and tip radius. In this experiment, electrode system was point-plane geometry. The tip radius of needle was 5, 10, 20 and $25{\mu}m$, respectively. Applied voltage was AC and DC. We measured breakdown voltage for each tip radius with increasing electrode gap, 2mm to 10mm. Under nonuniform electric field, breakdown strength was higher when needle was negative than when needle was positive. Because it is polarity effects due to space charge. And the more sharp tip radius, whether we applied AC or DC, the higher breakdown strength. As tip radius increase, breakdown strength decreases exponentially.

  • In this paper, a new method for calculating capacitance in arbitrarily shape structure is Presented. This new approach based on divergence theorem of Gauss\`s law is acheive by Surface-Contacted Element(SCE) for Gaussian surface. To evaluate accurate capacitance value in nonuniform electric field. in two dimensional analysis the interpolation using the elements which contact one nod (PE: Point-Element) or two nod (FE: Face-Element) is employed. Because the elements contacted with surface are very small compared with total elements in analytic model, SCE method has shorter computing time to calculate capacitance. This proposed method is verified by comparing the simulated results with value obtained by analytic method.

  • Impulse breakdown voltage characteristics of sulphur-hexafluoride/nitrogen ($SF_{6}-N_{2}$) mixtures were presented. The applied voltages were the positive and negative lightning impulse (1.2/44${\mu}s$) and oscillating impulse ($0.4{\mu}s$/2.08MHz) voltages. The predischarge current was observed to clarify the breakdown mechanism. The electrode system was consisted of plane to plane configuration with a needle-shaped protrusion whose length and diameter are 10mm and 1mm. The measurements were carried out at the gas pressure of mixtures up to 0.5MPa with nitrogen concentrations varying from 5 to 20%. The electrical breakdown in $SF_{6}-N_{2}$ mixtures develops with steplike pulses in leader mechanism. The minimum breakdown voltages for the negative lightning and oscillating impulse voltages were higher than those for the positive.

  • In this paper, a numerical calculation method based on CSM has been described. The electric field must be nonuniform even close to railway feed system. In that case, to calculate induced voltage, this paper uses the mutual capacitances between a conductor and railway feed system. The induced voltages of a conductor located at point (height=4m, distance=8m) near by railway feed system are calculated from 370V to 668V.

  • Sulfur hexafluoride is the most commly used insulation gas in electrical systems. Gas insulated systems are widely used in the electric power industry for transmission and distribution of electrical energy. When $SF_6$ was first discovered, the potential application was only considered for insulation because of good dielectric properties. But the widespread use of $SF_6$ gas by electric power and other industries has led to increase concentrations of $SF_6$ gas in the atmosphere. This concern as to possible effects on global warming because $SF_6$ is a potent greenhouse gas. That's why firstly we studied uniform and nonuniform field property by mixing $SF_6$ and N2 gas. This paper presents the dielectric strength and insulating property for particle contamination under $SF_6/N_2$ mixtures. Two types of mixed gases(50% $SF_6$_50%$N_2$, 20% $SF_6$_80%$N_2$) were applied. We performed tests for the length and shape of particle. Test gas pressure is from 0.3 to 0.7 Mpa. The study was conducted to develop environment-friendly insulating material for GIS that can reduce $SF_6$ gas and make a design criteria for mixtures.

  • This paper presents experimental results relating to the preliminary breakdown characteristics in $SF_6/CO_2$ gas mixtures under a highly non-uniform electric field. The impulse pre-breakdown developments are investigated by the measurements of corona current and light emission images. As a result, the preliminary breakdown development mechanisms for both the positive and negative polarities were fundamentally same. The first streamer corona was initiated at the tip of needle electrode, and the leaders developed with a stepwise propagation and bridged the test gap. The pause time of leader pulses in the positive polarity was significantly shorter than that in the negative polarity. Also, the time interval between the first streamer corona onset and breakdown in the negative polarity was much longer than that in the positive polarity. The discharge channel path in the positive polarity was zigzag, and the leader channel in the negative polarity was thicker and brighter than that in the positive polarity.
