  • The performance of ROF systems can be severely degraded due to nonlinear effects in the channel. Also, Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex(OFDM), as a standard for broadband wireless and mobile internet networks, is being proposed for deployment with ROF systems to facilitate the total performance of a system. In this paper, at first, the performance of the OFDM-based RoF system with a Mach-Zehnder(MZ) modulator distortion effects has been analyzed at 5.8GHz. Evaluation of mean-squared error of the proposed OFDM-RoF system was carried out to compare with the conventional single carrier system based RoF link after the modulator distortion case and also for fixed signal to noise ratio(SNR) of 20dB using undistorted OFDM signal. Nominal and offset baising pre-distortion techniques are applied in proposed system to linearize the OFDM-RoF link. Finally, a comparison between the aforementioned pre-distortion techniques applied showed important observation in terms of distortion-free dynamic range and SNR to choose offset pre-distortion technique for our proposed system.

  • In this paper, the effect of nonllinear distortion, caused by a high-power amplifier(HPA) in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system, on the receiver part is analyzed. Since the HPA, which can be modeled by a memeoryless Volterra system, distorts OFDM signals in a nonlinear fashion, the received signal at each subchannel includes the multiplicative distortion of 1-st order as well as additive nonlinear distortion of high-order. the nonlinear distortion can be viewed as a nonlinear interchannel interference (NICI) since it consists of harmonic distortions and intermodulation distortions, produced by oother subchannels affecting the subchannel of interest. In this paper, we analytically derive the variance of NICI in terms of average input power using the volterra model for HPA, and then calculate the bit-effor rate(BER) performance of an OFDM system. Also, we propose a simple method to compensate for the phase distortion in OFDM system amplified by HPA, OFDM system employing 16-QAM constellation input.

  • this thesis proposes a new echo canceller that can be used in a fulll-duplex digital subscriber loopmodem. The modem suffers from nonlinear distortion such as transmitted pulse asymmetry, saturation in transformers, and nonlinearity of data converters. The proposed nonlinear echo canceller can compensate the nolinear distortion by using a nonlinear digital filter based on canonical pieceewise-linear (CPWL) function. Numerical results based on computer simulation are given in this paper. It is shown that the convergence characteristics depend on the initial values of weights of linear filters with absoluters and that the nonlinearity in digital-to-analog(D/A) converter can be compensated by a relatively small number linear filters with absoluters. It is also shown that the proposed algorithm has a faster convergence rate in comparison with Voterra algorithm.

  • Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is an attractive technique for achieving high-bit-rate wireless data transmission. However, multicarrier systems such as OFDM show great sensitivity to nonlinear distortion. The OFDM structure requires a summation of a large number of subcarriers for multicarrier modulation, and as a result of this summation large signal envelope fluctuations occur. These fluctuations make OFDM systems to be very sensitive to nonlinear distortion introduced by the high power amplifier (HPA) at the transmitter. In this paper, we propose a canonical piecewise-linear (CPWL) model based digital predistorter to compensate for nonlinear distortion introduced by the high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) and the HPA in OFDM systems. The performance of the new predistortion scheme for OFDM systems is evaluated in terms of total degradation (TD) and bit error rate (BER). The simulation results demonstrated that the proposed predistorter achieves significant performance improvement by effectively compensating for the nonlinear distortion introduced by the HPA.

  • The quantity of alternating current (AC) leakage and the value of distortion factor in capacitor currents are discussed with regard to a new power component called variable capacitance device (VCD). This component has terminals for controlling its capacitance. Nonlinear dielectric characteristics are utilized in this device to vary the capacitance. When VCD operates in an AC circuit, the AC leakage from this device through direct current (DC) control voltage source increases according to the conditions of DC control voltage and so on. To solve this problem, we propose techniques for suppressing AC leakage. Although VCD has strong nonlinear characteristics, the current through the capacitor is not distorted significantly. The relations between AC leakage and the distortion in current waveforms are investigated. An application example for an AC power regulator is also introduced to evaluate the distortion in waveforms.

  • A high power amplifier(HPA) has widely been used in wireless communications. In order to have a maximum power efficiency, the HPA uses a saturation domain having nonlinear characteristics, which generates nonlinear distortions to decrease the transmission efficiency. In order to solve this problem, various methods to linearize HPA have been reported until now, and the pre-distorter method is very attractive among them. In this paper, a new enhanced adaptive pre-distorter method was proposed to be applied for compensating nonlinear distortions of HPA. Through computer simulations as well as the analytical analysis, it could be shown that it is possible for both conventional adaptive pre-distorter and proposed adaptive pre-distorter, to be applied for linearizing HPA. Also, the simulations results demonstrated that the proposed adaptive pre-distorter may have faster convergence speed and better capability of compensating the nonlinear distortion than the conventional adaptive pre-distorter with nearly equal computation complexity.

  • In this paper, a modified fixed-delay tree search with decision feedback(FDTS/DF) for compensation of non-linear distortion in digital magnetic recording channels is discussed. Since the nonlinear distortion, which becomes significant as recording density increases, is generally well modeled by the discrete Volterra series, the proposed equlizer is composed of a nolinear feedforward filter, a linear feedback filter, and a nonlinear distorton table, the values of which are determined by considering the effect of nonlinear distortion due to future data as well as the previous and current one. At the decision stage of FDTS, a path minimizing the branch metric is chosen by using the previously detected values, current predicted value, and future predicted value. We compare the performance of the linear FDTS/DF, the previous nonlinear FDTS/DF, and the proposed nonlinear FDTS/DF by computer simulation, and confirm that the proposed one chieves the best performance at high-density recording.

  • The OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) systems are based en the transmission of a given set of signals on multiple orthogonal subcarriers, resulting in large variation in amplitude of transmit signals, and severe distortion by nonlinear characteristic of a high power amplifier (HPA) is unavoidable. We propose in this paper a computationally efficient structure of a baseband predistorter for compensation of nonlinear distortion by the HPA. Moreover, a predistorter which can be utilized in high speed transmission systems such as wireless ATM based on the proposed structure is designed using VHDL, and synthesized by the Synopsys tool.

  • In this paper, an adaptive precompensator, which can reduce the distortion of a Wiener system effectively, is proposed. The previous techniques for adaptive precompensation, based on the Volterra series modeling to compensate the distortion of a nonlinear system, are not suitable for real-time implementation due to high computational burden and slow convergence burden and slow convergence rate. This paper presents an adaptive precompensation technique for the class of nonlinear subsystem, referred to as Wiener system. An adaptive algorithm for adjusting the parameters of a precompensator, structured by a hammerstein model, is derived using the stochastic gradient method. Also, an adaptive precompensatin technique which can effectively reduce nonlinear distortion in μ-law type of saturation characteristics is proposed. The validity of the proposed algorithm is confirmed through simulation by applying it to known Wiener systmes and a typical loudspeaker model.

  • In this paper, we proposed a new method to correct the zoom lens distortion for the video sequence captured by the zoom lens. First, we defined the nonlinear zoom lens distortion model which is represented by the focal length and the lens distortion using the characteristic that lens distortion parameters are nonlinearly and monotonically changed while the focal length is increased. Then, we chose some sample images from the video sequence and estimated a focal length and a lens distortion parameter for each sample image. Using these estimated parameters, we were able to optimize the zoom lens distortion model. Once the zoom lens distortion model was obtained, lens distortion parameters of other images were able to be computed as their focal lengths were input. The proposed method has been made experiments with many real images and videos. As a result, accurate distortion parameters were estimated from the zoom lens distortion model and distorted images were well corrected without any visual artifacts.
