  • The Contents of uranium and thorium in radioactive ores produced in Korea were determined by gamma-ray spectrometry utilizing Ge (Li) diode detector. Both methods, namely, gamma-ray spectrometries of activated samples and non-activated samples, were tested and compared for their accuracies and rapidness in determination of contents. Also the useful-ness of application of Ge(Li) diode detector to the determination of uranium and thorium contents in ores was discussed in detail.

  • Diabetes is a major cause of morbidity and mortality, and associated with a high risk of atherosclerosis, and liver, kidney, nerve and tissue damage. Defective insulin secretion in pancreas and/or insulin resistance in peripheral tissues is a central component of diabetes. It is well established that, regardless of the degree of muscle insulin resistance, glucose levels in diabetic and non-diabetic individuals are determined by the rate of hepatic glucose production. Moreover recently studies using liver-specific insulin receptor knockout mice show the paramount role of the liver in insulin resistance and diabetes. Insulin exerts a multifaceted and highly integrated series of actions via its intracellular signaling systems. The first major section of this review defines the major insulin-mediated signaling pathways including phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase and mitogen activated protein kinases. The second major section of the review presents a summary and evaluation of methods for determination of the role and function of signaling pathways, including methods for determination of kinase phosphorylation, the use of pharmacological inhibitors of kinase and dominant-negative kinase constructs, and the application of new RNA interference methods.

  • In this paper, we consider the morphism of inheritance in SR DEVS. The property of determination occurring in the inheritance can be non-deterministic. In this case the process can be implemented for the inheritnace determination through the morphism. The final determination of morphism might be changed as the environments. To the morphsim, it is not the appearance of new element, but the selection is processed in current elements.

  • Buckling and post-buckling Analysis of Ludwick type and modified Ludwick type elastic materials was carried out. Because the constitutive equation, or stress-strain relationship is different from that of linear elastic one, a new governing equation was derived and solved by $4^{th}$ order Runge-Kutta method. Considered as a special case of combined loading, the buckling under both point and distributed load was selected and researched. The final solution takes distinguished behavior whether the constitutive relation is chosen to be modified or non-modified Ludwick type as well as linear or non-linear. We also derived strain energy function for non-linear elastic constitutive relationship. By doing so, we calculated the criterion function which estimates the stability of the equilibrium solutions and determines critical buckling load for non-linear cases. We applied this theory to the constitutive relationship of fabric, which also is the non-linear equation between the applied moment and curvature. This results has both technical and mathematical significance.

Sample size determination based on placements for non-inferiority trials (비열등성 시험에서 위치 방법에 기초한 표본 수 결정)

  • In clinical research, sample size determination is one of the most important things. There are parametric method using t-test and non-parametric method suggested by Kim and Kim (2007) based on Wilcoxon's rank sum test for determining sample size in non-inferiority trials. In this paper, we propose sample size calculation method based on placements method suggested by Orban and Wolfe (1982) and using the power calculated by Kim (1994) in non-inferiority trials. We also compare proposed sample size with that using Kim and Kim (2007)'s formula and that of t-test for parametric methods. As the result, sample size calculated by proposed method based on placements is the smallest. Therefore, proposed method based on placements is better than parametric methods in case that it's hard to assume specific distribution function for population and also more efficient in terms of time and cost than method based on Wilcoxon's rank sum test.

  • SPEX SkinSkan is a newly developed spectrofluorometer that can calculate transmission of UVA on the surface of human skin as a non-invasive method. We have investigated UVA protection factors of Japanese over-the-counter sunscreens using SPEX SkinSkan. This non-invasive method is useful to know UVA protection of sunscreens in vivo.

  • Large frequency limiting distributions of two errors in realized covariance are investigated under noisy and non-synchronous high frequency sampling situations. The first distribution characterizes increased variance of the realized covariance due to noise for large frequency and the second distribution characterizes decreased variance of the realized covariance due to discretization for large frequency. The distribution of the combined error enables us to determine the sampling frequency which depends on a nuisance parameter. A consistent estimator of the nuisance parameter is proposed.

  • In this study, we analyzed the accuracy of the conversion from DLT parameters to physical camera parameters and optimized the use of DLT model for non-metric cameras in photogrammetric tasks. Using the simulated data, we computed two sets of physical camera parameters from DLT parameters and Bundle adjustment for various cases. Comparing two results based on the RMSE values of check points, we optimized the arrangement of GCPs for DLT.

  • An automated process planning system for cold forging of non-axisymmetric parts of comparatively simple shape was developed in this study. Programs for the system have been written with Visual LISP in the AutoCAD using a personal computer and are composed of four main modules such as input module, shape cognition and shape expression module, material diameter determination module and process planning module. The design rules and knowledges for th system are extracted from the plasticity theories. handbook, relevant reference and empirical knowledge of field experts. Generally, in forging, only front view is needed for expression of axisymmetric parts, but non-axisymmetric parts are needed both front view and plane. At the plane, this system cognizes the external shape of non-axisymmetric parts - number of sides of regular polygon and radius of a circle circumscribing the polygon of n sides. At the front view, the system perceives diameter of axisymmetric portions and hight of primitive geometries such as polygon, cylinder, cone, concave, convex, etc.

Non-contact surface wave testing of pavements: comparing a rolling microphone array with accelerometer measurements

  • Rayleigh wave velocity along a straight survey line on a concrete plate is measured in order to compare different non-destructive data acquisition techniques. Results from a rolling non-contact data acquisition system using air-coupled microphones are compared to conventional stationary accelerometer results. The results show a good match between the two acquisition techniques. Rolling measurements were found to provide a fast and reliable alternative to stationary system for stiffness determination. However, the non-contact approach is shown to be sensitive to unevenness of the measured surface. Measures to overcome this disadvantage are discussed and demonstrated using both forward and reverse rolling measurements.
