  • Noise has become an environmental pollution that affects most peoples' health, comfort or general well being. there are many sources of noise, but one of them clearly dominates road traffic noise. It has traditionally been associated with engine and exhaust noise of vehicles. However the emission and propagation of noise from these sources were partly reduced, while at the same time the noise emission from the tire/road interaction on a relative scale became more and more prominent Generally, Portland cement concrete(PCC) pavements have the advantage of durability and superior surface friction when compared to most dense-graded asphalt. However, It is known that PCC pavements create more noise than asphaltic surfaces due to the noise from interaction of tire and pavement surface. Therefore, recent research has shown some new concrete pavement textures to be worth further examination. So in this paper, we considered the 9 types of low noise concrete pavements to evaluate tire/pavement noise.

  • To estimate the effects of environmental noise on inhabitants' life in an apartment area at Taejon, noise levels and traffic volume of major roads were measured. 203 housewives were surveyed by questionaires including general factors, noise related factors and three items of life effects: subjective evaluations on the general environment, annoyance, and life disturbance due to environmental noise. At the boundary adjacent to the road with more traffic volume, noise level was higher; according to the time, the amount of noise level was in the morning, in the evening, at noon, and at night in order. Most of boundary noise levels were higher than those of recommended standard environmental noise levels in a residential area. The boundary noise level showed a very significant linear relationship with traffic volume of near roads. Noise level difference in the apartments adjacent to three roads was ranged 2.4~6.7dB between in windows open and close state. The apartments adjacent to 9 lane or 6 lane-road, which were protected by noise prevention wall and 20m or more distance from the roads, showed higher noise level at middle floors and high floors than those of low floors; but the buildings adjacent to 4 lane-road, with no protection, showed higher noise level at low and middle floors than those of high floors. Among 203 housewives, 120(59.1%) participated in this study, and 86(73.2%) of them answered that the most serious environmental noise was traffic noise from near roads. Comparing traffic noise levels with those of before-migration, 67.0% participants found the environmental noise became louder. Fifty eight(49.5%) of the participants wanted noise protection wall and 15(25.9%) of them were willing to charge the fee. Less perception on the present noise comparing to those before-migration, less traffic volume, and lower noise levels in the apartments were related to higher scores of self-evaluation on the environment. Higher susceptibility on the present noise, areas with more traffic volume, higher boundary noise levels, and higher noise levels showed higher scores of annoyance on environmental noise and life disturbance. Considering above all things, it was suggested that traffic noise in this area was the major problem of environmental noise, and its' effect was so serious that inhabitants needed some preventive measures for better life quality.

  • This study performed an physical analysis on the characteristics of urban environmental sound divided into three parts depending on their features. Object sounds were classified into traffic sound, waster sound and spatial sound. Traffice sound was selected because it is dominant sound in urban environment, and water sound is selected because it generally supplies pleasantness in contrast to traffic sound, Finally spatial sound was considered because it represents sound in various places of city having lots of behaviors and types of sound due to them. Physcal analysis was carried out using sound quality indices based on Zwicker's loudness, $L_{Aeq}$(equivalent noise level), Ln(percentile noise level) and other acoutical attributes applied to previous study. Through the analysis, this study aims to compare the acoustical characteristics of urban environmental sound and to provide fundamental data for the evaluation of urban environmental sound.

  • The ferritic 2.25CrMo steel has been used for high temperature structure applications such as turbine rotors, boilers and pressure vessels in fossil plant and petroleum chemical facilities. However, this steel is known to result in aging degradation due to temper embrittlement, carbide induced brittleness and softening of matrix after long time exposure to high temperature. This research investigated the microstructural and mechanical changes after artificial degradation treatment and evaluated the degree of degradation by several nondestructive methods. The decrease of electrical resistivity and increase of magnetic Barkhausen noise(RMS voltage) with increasing aging time were observed. The change of electrical resistivity and Barkhausen noise showed a good correlation with the ductile-brittle transition temperature.

  • Fusion of decisions from multiple distributed sensor nodes is studied in this work. Based on the canonical parallel fusion model, we derive the optimal likelihood ratio based fusion rule with the assumptions of the generalized Gaussian noise model and the arbitrary fading channel. This optimal fusion rule, however, requires the complete knowledge of the channels and the detection performance of local sensor nodes. To mitigate these requirements and to provide near optimum performance, we derive suboptimum fusion rules by using high and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) approximations to the optimal fusion rule. Performance evaluation is conducted through simulations.

  • = ABSTRACT =Objectives : We evaluated the effect of the aircraft noise on the behavior and affect status of the local elementary school students. Methods : The daytime noise levels of the exposed and control areas were compared and the self answered questionnaires from 272 students and their parents of the exposed area and 91 of the control area were collected. The questionnaires are regarding the noise sensitivity and the psychosocial status of the students, noise sensitivity of the parents and the parents' behavioral evaluation for their children. Results : The mean noise level of the exposed area (67.6 dB(A)) showed higher level than the control area (57.1 dB(A), 58.2 dB(A), 60.2 dB(A)) and it was statistically significant. The mean score for noise sensitivity and the mean score for brief mental exam. in the exposed students were lower than the mean scores in the control group but they were not statistically significant (p=0.056 & 0.165). The mean score for behavioral evaluation of students by their parents in the exposed area(15.5) was higher than the mean score in the control group(13.2) and it was statistically significant(p=0.043). The mean score for noise sensitivity in the exposed parent(27.5) was higher than the mean score in the control group(24.1) and it was statistically significant(p=0.045). Conclusions : This study revealed that the noise sensitivity of the parents affected the behavioral evaluation of the students than noise-exposure itself. The further study is needed to evaluate relationship between aircraft noise and it's effect on children's health.

  • As Decentralized Generation(DG) becomes more reliable and economically feasible, it is expected that a higher application of DG units would be interconnected to the existing grids. This new market penetration of DG technologies is linked to a large number of factors like technologies costs and performances, interconnection issues, safety, market regulations, environmental issues or grid connection constrains. This paper describes the procedures and results for the mechanical, electrical, and environmental tests of MGT on actual grid-connection under Korean regulations. As one of the achievements, the simulation model of MGT was developed, so that it will be able to analyze or propose new distributed generation system using MGT. The field test was conducted in order to respond to a wide variety of needs for noise reduction and utilization and its performance was evaluated in consideration of its operational problems. The MGT is successfully supplying electricity to Korean grids with satisfying various regulations. The suggested strategy and experience for the evaluation of the distributed generation will be used for the introduction of other distributed generation technologies into the grid in the future.

  • Most of the diagnostic medical radiography are rapidly replaced by digital imaging systems recently. Although with the current transition of analog to digital most of the exposure conditions and parameters are still on the basis of film-screen analog system. Moreover the evaluation of acquired digital radiographic image is not fulfilled normally because of the difficulties in handling the digital raw data. The user friendly windows program for the evaluations of digital radiographic image was developed on the MatLab platform. The program has functions for the calculation of the contrast profile, NPS(noise power spectrum), MTF(modulation transfer function), and NEQ(noise equivalent quanta).

  • In a large diameter piping system, high frequency energy can produce excessive noise, high vibration, and failures of thermo-well, instrumentation, and attached small-bore piping. High frequency energy is generated by flow induced vibration like vortex shedding in orifices and valves. Once this energy is generated, amplification may occur from acoustical and/or structural resonances, resulting in high amplitude vibration and noise. At low frequencies, pipe vibration occurs laterally along the pipe's length, but at higher frequencies, the pipe shell wall vibrates radially across its cross-section. The simple beam analogy which is based on the beam mode vibration can not be applied to evaluate shell mode vibration. ASME OM3 recommends that the stress be measured directly by strain gauge and be evaluated according to the fatigue curves of the piping material. This Paper discusses the excitation and amplification mechanism relevant to high frequency energy generation in piping system, the monitoring method of the shell mode vibration in ASME OM3, the evaluation method generally used in the industry. Finally this paper presents the stress evaluation of the cavitating venturi down stream piping, where high frequency shell mode vibrations were observed during the operation.

  • The indoor noise of the naval vessel is very important related to the optimum environmental conditions for crews as well as the ability of fighting power of antisubmarine. Especially, sonar equipment room is one of the rooms where require to be silent because the informations of the underwater noise are collected and analyzed in there. In this paper, the sound reduction of the TASS console, one of the main noise sources in a sonar equipment room for a typical naval vessel, is described. The noise source of this TASS console is the flowing noise of cooling fan. In order to reduce this kind of noise, the plenum chamber and acoustic elbow were developed. Related to the development of the plenum chamber, the area of the air-outlet and sound absorption of the inner lining were investigated experimentally with the evaluation system of the sound insertion loss. Acoustic elbow was also manufactured and evaluated with the evaluation system of the sound insertion loss. Finally, in order to evaluated the ability of noise reduction of the plenum chamber and acoustic elbow, the indoor noise of the sonar equipment was measured when they were appled to TASS console.
