저온 플라즈마를 이용한 과 수소가스 발생에 관한 실험적 연구 (Experiment study on hydrogen-rich gas generation using non-thermal plasma)

  • This is a report of a feasibility study on the reduction of harmful substances such as particulate matters and nitric oxides emitted from diesel engines by using a plasma reforming system that can generate hydrogen-rich gas. In this paper, an exhaust reduction mechanism of the non-thermal plasma reaction was investigated to perform its efficiency and characteristics on producing hydrogen-rich gas. Firstly, we explain briefly the chemistry of hydrocarbon reforming. The experimental system is showed in the second part. Finally, we demonstrate the feasibility of producing hydrogen using non-thermal plasma. The experimental results are focused on the influence of the different operating parameters (air ratio, inlet flow rates, voltage) on the reformer efficiency and the composition of the produced gas.

A New Chemical for the Separation of the CRT Panel Glass from its Funnel

  • The first step for recycling the CRT bulb is to remove frist seals between the panel and funnel. For this purpose, various kinds of methods have been used. One of those is to use the nitric acid, which is a proven technology and widely used in CRT-making industries. The process. however. has a problem of NOx generation. Such a drawback can be overcome by using a new chemical. This new chemical can remove the frit without NOx generation. This paper describes the dissolution ability of the chemical for lead and zinc oxides and the application to the separation of the CRT panel from its funnel.

Characteristics of NOx Emission with Flue Gas Dilution in Air and Fuel Sides

  • Flue gas recirculation (FGR) is a method widely adopted to control NOx in combustion system. The recirculated flue gas decreases flame temperature and reaction rate, resulting in the decrease in thermal NO production. Recently, it has been demonstrated that the recirculated flue gas in fuel stream, that is, the fuel induced recirculation (FIR), could enhance a much improved reduction in NOx per unit mass of recirculated gas, as compared to the conventional FGR in air. In the present study, the effect of FGR/FIR methods on NOx reduction in turbulent swirl flames by using N$_2$ and CO$_2$ as diluent gases to simulate flue gases. Results show that CO$_2$ dilution is more effective in NO reduction because of large temperature drop due to the larger specific heat of CO$_2$ compared to N$_2$ and FIR is more effective to reduce NO emission than FGR when the same recirculation ratio of dilution gas is used.

엔진속도와 부하가 디젤 배기가스에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 (A study of the effects of engine speed and load on diesel emissions)

  • Smoke, Hydrocarbon and Garbon Monoxide emissions of concern in environmental pollution on AVDS-170-2D diesel engine were studied experimentally and past studies on emissions of diesel engine were investigate. Engine speed and load were considered as variable factors influencing the emissions. The test results of a multicylinder, direct injection and turblcharged 4 cycle diesel engine were compared with past studies. Both emission levels of experimental study and past studies were markedly influenced by engine operation factors. The results obtained in this study can be summarized as follows; 1) Smoke intensity is proportional to engine load and varies with engine speed. 2) Hydrocarbon and nitric oxides emissions vary with engine speed and load. 3) Garbon monoxide emission is insensitive to engine speed and varies with engine load.

Reduction Behaviors of Nitric Oxides on Copper-decorated Mesoporous Molecular Sieves

  • In this study, NO reduction behaviors of copper-loaded mesoporous molecular sieves (Cu/MCM-41) have been investigated. The Cu loading on MCM-41 surfaces was accomplished by a chemical reduction method with different Cu contents (5, 10, 20, and 40%). $N_2/77$ K adsorption isotherm characteristics, including the specific surface area and pore volume, were studied by BET's equation. NO reduction behaviors were confirmed by a gas chromatography. From the experimental results, the Cu loading amount on MCM-41 led to the increase of NO reduction efficiency in spite of decreasing the specific surface area of catalysts. This result indicates that highly ordered porous structure in the MCM-41 and the presence of active metal particles lead the synergistical NO reduction reactions due to the increase in adsorption energy of MCM-41 surfaces by the Cu particles.

수소 혼소 디젤 기관의 성능 및 미립자상 물질의 배출 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Performance and Particulate Emission Characteristics for the Hydrogen-Premixed Diesel Engine)

  • In order to reduce harmful substances such as particulates and nitric oxides emitted from diesel engine, man kinds of methodology like high pressure spray of diesel fuel oil, exhaust gas recirculation, emulsified fuel usage and dual fuelling have been studied. Dual fuelling of a diesel engine with hydrogen which is well-known as the clean fuel and has excellent combustibility is expected to be effective in reducing harmful substances from diesel engine. This experimental study was conducted to investigate the effect of premixed hydrogen with intake air on the performance and particulate emission characteristics using a single cylinder, prechamber type diesel engine. As a result, it was clarified that a hydrogen-premixed diesel engine can be operated in the state of lower particulate emission and slightly aggravated fuel economy, compared with the conventional diesel engine.

Evaluating the Catalytic Effects of Carbon Materials on the Photocatalytic Reduction and Oxidation Reactions of TiO2

  • $TiO_2$ composites with seven different carbon materials (activated carbons, graphite, carbon fibers, single-walled carbon nanotubes, multi-walled carbon nanotubes, graphene oxides, and reduced graphene oxides) that are virgin or treated with nitric acid are prepared through an evaporation method. The photocatalytic activities of the as-prepared samples are evaluated in terms of $H_2$ production from aqueous methanol solution (photo-catalytic reduction: PCR) and degradation of aqueous pollutants (phenol, methylene blue, and rhodamine B) (photocatalytic oxidation: PCO) under AM 1.5-light irradiation. Despite varying effects depending on the kinds of carbon materials and their surface treatment, composites typically show enhanced PCR activity with maximum 50 times higher $H_2$ production as compared to bare $TiO_2$. Conversely, the carbon-induced synergy effects on PCO activities are insignificant for all three substrates. Colorimetric quantification of hydroxyl radicals supports the absence of carbon effects. However, platinum deposition on the binary composites displays the enhanced effect on both PCR and PCO reactions. These differing effects of carbon materials on PCR and PCO reactions of $TiO_2$ are discussed in terms of physicochemical properties of carbon materials, coupling states of $TiO_2$/carbon composites, interfacial charge transfers. Various surface characterizations of composites (UV-Vis diffuse reflectance, SEM, FTIR, surface area, electrical conductivity, and photoluminescence) are performed to gain insight on their photocatalytic redox behaviors.

음이온 교환수지에 의한 고순도 희토류산화물의 분리 및 정량에 관한 연구 (Study on the Separation and Determination of Pure Rare Earth Oxides by Anion Exchange Resin)

  • 음이온 교환수지를 이용하여 CeO$_2$, Sm$_2$O$_3$ 및 La$_2$O$_3$에 잔류물로 포함된 미량의 희토류원소들을 분리하였고, MTB(Methyl-Thymol Blue)를 가지고 분리된 원소들의 흡광도를 측정하여 순도를 측정하였다. Y$^{3+}$, Yb$^{3+}$, Eu$^{3+}$, Sm$^{3+}$, Nd$^{3+}$, Pr$^{3+}$, Ce$^{4+}$ 및 La$^{3+}$이 각각 1 mg/ml 들어있는 혼합시료 1ml를 수지 상단에 흡착시키고 여러 가지 조성의 메탄올과 질산의 혼합용액을 용리액으로 사용하여 분리하였다. 그 결과를 이용하여 순도의 CeO$_2$, Sm$_2$O$^{3+}$ 그리고 La$_2$O$^{3+}$에 불순물로 들어있는 미량의 다른 희토류원소를 정량하였다.

Curcumin-Induced Apoptosis of A-431 Cells Involves Caspase-3 Activation

  • Curcumin a yellow pigment from Curcuma Tonga, has been known to possess antioxidative and anticarcinogenic properties, as well as to induce apoptosis in some cancer cells. There have been, however, several contradictory reports that hypothesized curcumin (a hydrophobic molecule) can bind a membrane Gpid bilayer and induce nonspecific cytotoxicity in some cell lines. Why curcumin shows these contradictory effects is unknown. In A-431 cells, growth inhibition by curcumin is due mostly to the specific inhibition of the intrinsic tyrosine kinase activity of the epidermal growth factor receptor, as reported earlier by Korutla et al. Thus, we assumed that the cell death of A-431 by curcumin might be due to the specific induction of apoptosis. In this paper we clearly show that curcumin induces apoptosis in A-431 cells. The cureumin-induced cell death of A-431 exhibited various apoptotic features, including DNA fragmentation and nuclear condensation. Furthermore, the curcumin-induced apoptosis of A-431 cells involved activation of caspase-3-like cysteine protease. Involvement of caspase-3 was further confirmed by using a caspase-3 specific inhibitor, DEVD-CHO. In another study, decreased nitric oxide (NO) production was also shown in A-431 cells treated with curcumin, which seems to be the result of the inhibition of the iNOS expression by curcumin, as in other cell lines. However, 24 h after treatment of curcumin there was increased NO production in A-431 cells. This observation has not yet been clearly explained. We assumed that the increased NO production may be related to denitrosylation of the enzyme catalytic site in caspase-3 when activated. Taken together, this study shows that the cell death of A-431 by curcumin is due to the induction of apoptosis, which involves caspase-3 activation.

폐 배터리 셀 분말의 선택적 리튬 침출을 위한 질산염화 공정 최적화 연구 (A Study on Optimization of Nitric Acid Leaching and Roasting Process for Selective Lithium Leaching of Spent Batreries Cell Powder)

  • 본 연구에서는 Taguchi method을 사용하여 폐 배터리 셀 분말(LiNixCoyMnzO2, LiCoO2)으로부터 선택적 리튬 침출을 위한 최적의 질산염화 공정에 대한 연구를 진행했다. 질산염화 공정은 질산 침출 및 배소를 통해 질산리튬을 제외한 질산 화합물을 산화물로 변환하여 선택적 리튬 침출을 하는 공정이다. 따라서 전처리 온도, 질산 농도, 질산 침적 양, 배소 온도에 대하여 Taguchi method를 적용하여 인자가 미치는 영향에 대한 분석을 실시하였다. L16(44)직교 배열표를 사용하여 실험하였으며, 신호 대 잡음비(S/N) 및 분산 분석(ANOVA)을 분석하였다. 그 결과 배소 온도가 가장 크게 영향을 미쳤으며 질산 농도, 전처리 온도, 질산 사용량 순으로 영향을 미쳤다. 각 인자에 대해 세부적인 실험을 진행한 결과 전처리 700℃에서 10시간, 10 M 질산 2 ml/g 침출, 275℃ 배소 10시간이 적절하였다. 그 결과 80% 이상의 리튬을 침출을 확인하였다. 400℃ 이상 배소 시 급격하게 리튬 침출율이 감소원인 분석을 위해 질산리튬과 질산 화합물을 배소 후 D.I water에서 침출하지 잔류물에 대해 XRD 분석을 진행하였다. 분석 결과 질산리튬과 질산망간과 400℃ 이상의 온도에서 리튬 망간 옥사이드의 형성하며 D.I water에서 침출하지 않음을 확인하였다. 질산염화 공정 시 침출된 용액을 고액분리 후 증발농축하여 XRD 분석한 결과 LiNO3의 회수를 확인하였다.
