Solvothermal treatment of late transition metal acetylacetonates in a novel medium composed either of pure acetophenone or acetophenone mixtures with amino alcohols offers a general approach to uniform hydrophilic metal nanoparticles with high crystallinity and low degree of aggregation. Both pure metal and mixed-metal particles can be accesses by this approach. The produced materials have been characterized by SEM-EDS, TEM, FTIR in the solid state and by Nanoparticle Tracking Analysis in solutions. The chemical mechanisms of the reactions producing nanoparticles has been followed by NMR. Carrying out the process in pure acetophenone produces palladium metal, copper metal with minor impurity of $Cu_2O$, and NiO. The synthesis starting from the mixtures of Pd and Ni acetylacetonates with up to 20 mol% of Pd, renders in minor yield the palladium-based metal alloy along with nickel oxide as the major phase. Even the synthesis starting from a mixed solution of $Cu(acac)_2$ and $Ni(acac)_2$ produces oxides as major products. The situation is improved when aminoalcohols such as 2-aminoethanol or 2-dimethylamino propanol are added to the synthesis medium. The particles in this case contain metallic elements and pairs of individual metals (not metal alloys) when produced from mixed precursor solutions in this case.

This study investigated the effects of six metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs: CuO, NiO, TiO2, Fe2O3, Co3O4, ZnO) on seed germination and germination index (G.I) for five types of seeds: Brassica napus L., Malva verticillata L., Brassica olercea L., Brassica campestris L., Daucus carota L. NPs of CuO, ZnO, NiO show significant toxicity impacts on seed activities [CuO (6-27 mg/L), ZnO (16-86 mg/L), NiO (48-112 mg/L)], while no significant effects were observed at > 1000 mg/L of TiO2, Fe2O3, Co3O4. Tested five types of seed showed different sensitivities on seed germination and root activity, especially on NPs of CuO, ZnO, NiO. Malva verticillata L. seed was highly sensitive to toxic metal oxide NPs and showed following EC50s : CuO 5.5 mg/L, ZnO 16.4 mg/L, NiO 53.4 mg/L. Mostly following order of toxicity was observed, CuO > ZnO > NiO > Fe2O3 ≈ Co3O4 ≈ TiO2, where slightly different toxicity order was observed for carrot, showing CuO > NiO ≈ ZnO > Fe2O3 ≈ Co3O4 ≈ TiO2.

Catalytic filters consisting of Ni nanoparticle and carbon fiber with different oxidation states of Ni (either metallic or oxidic) were prepared using a chemical vapor deposition process and various post-annealing steps. CO oxidation reactivity of each sample was evaluated using a batch type quartz reactor with a gas mixture of CO (500 mtorr) and $O_2$ (3 torr) at $300^{\circ}C$. Metallic and oxidic Ni showed almost the same CO oxidation reactivity. Moreover, the CO oxidation reactivity of metallic sample remained unchanged in the subsequently performed second reaction experiment. We suggested that metallic Ni transformed into oxidic state at the initial stage of the exposure to the reactant gas mixture, and Ni-oxide was catalytically active species. In addition, we found that CO oxidation reactivity of Ni-oxide surface was enhanced by increase in the $H_2O$ impurity in the reactor.
Nickel nanoparticle-poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone)/$TiO_2-ZrO_2$ composite (Ni-PVP/$TiO_2-ZrO_2$) was prepared by in situ polymerization method. The physical and chemical properties of Ni-PVP/$TiO_2-ZrO_2$ were investigated by XRD, FT-IR, BET, TGA, SEM and TEM techniques. The catalytic performance of this novel heterogeneous catalyst was determined for the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction between aryl halides and phenylboronic acid in the presence of methanol-water mixture as solvent. The effects of reaction temperature, the amount of catalyst, amount of support, solvent, and amount of metal for the synthesis of Ni-PVP/$TiO_2-ZrO_2$, were investigated as well as recyclability of the heterogeneous composite. The catalyst used for this synthetically useful transformation showed considerable level of reusability besides very good activity.
Nanoporous materials with nanometer-sized pores, are of great interest in the various applications such as selective adsorbents, heterogeneous catalysts and catalyst supports because of their high porosity, surface area, and size selective adsorption properties. This study is aimed to prepare nanoporous catalytic materials on the basis of two-dimersional clay by pillaring of $SiO_2$ sol particles. $SiO_2$ Pillared Montmorillonite (Si-PILM) was prepared by ion exchanging the interlayer $Ni^{2+}$ ions of clay with $SiO_2$ nano-sized particles of which the surface was modified with nicked polyhydroxy cations sach as $Ni_4(OH)_4^{4+}$. Nano-sized $SiO_2$ particles were formed by the controlled hydrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). Upon pillaring of $Ni^+$-modified $SiO_2$ nano particles between the clay layers, the basal spacing was expanded largely to $45{\AA}$ and the extremely large specific surface area ($S_{BET}$) of $760m^2/g$ was obtained.
The $Ni_{0.5}Zn_{0.5}Fe_2O_4$ nanoparticles about 30 nm were prepared using sol-gel method with metal nitrates dissolved in 2-methoxyathanol. The concentrations of the metal nitrates are adjusted from 0.1 to 0.75 M in order to study the influence on the structural and magnetic properties. The structure and morphology characterization revealed that the crystallinity was improved and the nanoparticle size was increased with the nutrition solution concentrations up to 0.5 M. Degraded crystallinity together with decreased nanoparticle size were observed for concentration of 0.75 M. The saturation magnetization at room temperature reached maximum at 0.5 M, which can be explained by considering the crystallinity and size effect.
$Ni_{0.9}Zn_{0.1}Fe_2O_4$ nanoparticles have been prepared by a sol-gel method. The structural and magnetic properties have been investigated by DTA/TGA, XRD, SEM, and $M\ddot{o}ssbauer$ spectroscopy, VSM. $Ni_{0.9}Zn_{0.1}Fe_2O_4$ powder that was annealed at $300^{\circ}C$ has spinel structure and behaved superparamagnetically. The estimated size of superparammagnetic Ni-Zn ferrite nanoparticle is around 10 nm. The hyperfine fields at 13 K for the A and B patterns were found to be 533 and 507 kOe, respectively. The blocking temperature ($T_B$) of superparammagnetic $Ni_{0.9}Zn_{0.1}Fe_2O_4$ nanoparticle is about 250 K. The magnetic anisotropy constant and relaxation time constant of $Ni_{0.9}Zn_{0.1}Fe_2O_4$ nanoparticle were calculated to be $1.6\times10^6\;ergs/cm^3$ and ${\tau}_0=5.0{\times}10^{-13}$ s, respectively. Also, Temperature increased up to $43^{\circ}C$ within 10 minutes under AC magnetic field of 7 MHz. It is considered that $Ni_{0.9}Zn_{0.1}Fe_2O_4$ powder that was annealed at $300^{\circ}C$ is available for biomedicine application such as hyperthermia, drug delivery system and contrast agents in MRI.
This study reports an environment-friendly synthetic strategy to process nickel oxide nanocrystals. A mesoporous nickel oxide nanostructure was synthesized using an environmentally benign biomimetic method. We used a natural rambutan peel waste resource as a raw material to ligate nickel ions to form nickel-ellagate complexes. The direct decomposition of the obtained complexes at $700^{\circ}C$, $900^{\circ}C$ and $1100^{\circ}C$ in a static air atmosphere resulted in mesoporous nickel oxide nanostructures. The formation of columnar mesoporous NiO with a concentric stacked doughnuts architecture was purely dependent on the suitable direct decomposition temperature at $1100^{\circ}C$ when the synthesis was carried out. The prepared NiO nanocrystals were coated on cotton fabric and their antibacterial activity was also analyzed. The NiO nanoparticle-treated cotton fabric exhibited good antibacterial and wash durability performance.

Graphene has emerged as a fascinating material for next-generation nanoelectronics due to its outstanding electronic properties. In particular, graphene-based field effect transistors (GFETs) have been a promising research subject due to their superior response times, which are due to extremely high electron mobility at room temperature. The biggest challenges in GFET applications are control of carrier concentration and opening the bandgap of graphene. To overcome these problems, three approaches to doping graphene have been developed. Here we demonstrate the decoration of Ni nanoparticles (NPs) on graphene films by simple annealing for p-type doping of graphene. Ni NPs/graphene films were fabricated by coating a $NiCl2{\cdot}6H2O$ solution onto graphene followedby annealing. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy revealed that high-density, uniformly sized Ni NPs were formed on the graphene films and the density of the Ni NPs increased gradually with increasing $NiCl2{\cdot}6H2O$ concentration. The formation of Ni NPs on graphene films was explained by heat-driven dechlorination and subsequent particlization, as investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The doping effect of Ni NPs onto graphene films was verified by Raman spectroscopy and electrical transport measurements.
