  • Synthetic seismograms and deduced characteristic properties of the non-geometrical $S^*$ and $P^*$ waves are presented. These waves are excited on the free surface or an interface between two different media by an inhomogeneous P wave from a point source nearby, and propagate as homogeneous waves in the media. Synthetic seismograms are computed using an extended reflectivity method designed for buried source and receiver. An efficient computational procedure for propagator matrices of layers is devised to reduce the computational time and the RAM memory size in the implementation of the reflectivity method. Radiation patterns are obtained from the particle motions of the four types of the "*" waves, i.e., the $S^*$ wave generated near the free surface, and the reflected $S^*$, transmitted $S^*$ and transmitted $P^*$ waves generated near an interface. Some patterns show polarity changes of displacements and others reveal monotonic or non-monotonic variation of amplitude depending on the velocity structure. The decaying trend of amplitude with increasing epicentral distance are also shown for the head wave type of the "*" waves.

  • Polarimetric study of light scattering from cometary dust particles can provide us opportunity to decipher their characteristics, such as sizes, structures, compositions of dust grains, etc. Herein, we present the results of our polarimetric study of long-period comet, C/2013 US10 (Catalina), in optical and near-infrared wavelengths which appeared at large phase angle (52.7 degrees) around the mid-December, 2015. We performed polarimetric and spectroscopic observations with HONIR, attached to the 1.5-m telescope at Higashi-Hiroshima Observatory, on UT 2015 December 17-18 and also obtained optical imaging data sets by the Ishigakijima Astronomical Observatory (IAO) and Okayama Astrophysical Observatory (OAO) taken between 2014-2015. By measuring the intensities of gas emission lines with respect to dust continuum and considering transmittance of each filter, we estimated that the percentages of gas contamination are approximately 10 percents in $R_C$-band and 3 percents in $I_C$-band. With these results, we derive the degree of linear polarization scattered solely from dust components in the coma. At this presentation, we will compare the phase-angle dependence of the degree of linear polarization with those of previous archive data in a wide coverage of wavelengths from $R_C$-band to $K_S$-band. Finally, we are supposed to discuss the spatial variations in polarization within the coma.

  • In Seoul, skyscrapers are built in commercial zones known as residential-commercial complexes, which cause such environmental problems as urban heat islands(UHI) and air pollution. To investigate air temperature differences in areas near skyscrapers at Gangnam-gu, Seoul, South Korea, fixed air temperature observation and traverse observations were performed from March 16, 2008 to March 15, 2009. The annual mean air temperature at Tower Palace(TPL) was higher than that at Sookmyung Girls' High School(SMG) by $0.7^{\circ}C$, although the distance between the two observation positions is only 200m. The number of tropical nights at TPL was 13, while that at SMG was 5. The higher air temperature at TPL was due to a significantly lower sky view factor(SVF), which prevented long-wave radiation from emitting into the sky. The highest air temperature increases near TPL occurred on summer nights because of the high-electricity consumption value of $70.22Wh/m^2$ for the TPL block in August due to air conditioning for cooling. It is concluded that the warm air pocket centered on TPL.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the performance of four commercial chemical agents in stabilizing arsenic (As) in soil at the forest area near the former Janghang smelter site. After amending the stabilizing agents (A, B, C, and D) into As-contaminated soil samples, synthetic precipitation leaching procedure (SPLP) and solubility bioavailability research consortium (SBRC)-extractable As concentrations significantly decreased except for agent D, which is mainly composed of fly ash and calcium carbonate. Increase of SPLP and SBRC-extractable As concentrations in four soil samples (S1, S2, S3, and J2) was attributed to desorption of As adsorbed on iron oxides due to high pH generated by agent D. It is therefore necessary to consider application conditions according to soil characteristics such as pH and buffering capacity. Results of sequential extraction showed that readily extractable fractions of As in soil (i.e., sum of $SO_4-$ and $PO_4-extractable$ As in soil) were converted into non-readily extractable fractions by amending agents A, B, and C. Such changes in the As distribution in soil resulted in the decrease of SPLP and SBRC-extractable As concentration. A series of follow-up monitoring and management plan has been suggested to assess the longevity of the stabilization treatments in the site.

  • We analyzed the high-resolution wind data of Aircraft-Based Observation from the Mode-Selective Enhanced Surveillance (Mode-S EHS) data in Korea. For assessment of its quality, the Mode-S wind data was compared with the ECMWF ReAnalysis 5 (ERA5) reanalysis and Aircraft Meteorological Data Relay (AMDAR) data for more than 3-months from 7 May 2021 to 24 August 2021 near Incheon International Airport, Korea. Considering that the AMDAR reports are not provided by all commercial aircraft, total number of the Mode-S derived wind data with a second sampling rate was about twice larger than that of available AMDAR wind data. After the quality control procedures by removing erroneous samples, it was found that the root mean square errors (RMSEs) of the Mode-S retrieved winds are similar to that from the AMDAR winds. In particular, between 550 and 650 hPa levels, RMSE of the Mode-S (AMDAR) zonal wind against ERA5 data was about 2.3 m s-1 (1.9 m s-1), and those increased to 3.3 m s-1 (2.4 m s-1) in 200~500 hPa levels. A similar trend was found in the meridional wind, but a distinct positive mean bias of 2.16 m s-1 was observed between 875 and 1,000 hPa levels. Winds retrieved from the Mode-S also showed a good agreement directly with AMDAR data. As the Mode-S provides a large amount of data with a reliable quality, it can be useful for both data assimilation in the numerical weather prediction model and situational awareness of wind and turbulence for aviation safety in Korea.

  • When a body starts to move, the flow near the intersection point between a body and a free surface changes violently and rapidly in a very short initial time interval. This flow phenomena must be investigated whenever one treats the interaction between a body and a fluid, such as the motion of a floating body, sloshing in a tank, wave maker problem, entry of a body into a fluid etc.. Until Roberts(1987), it was widely accepted that a singularity exists at the intersection point. However, he showed that the singularity does not exist if a body moves non-impulsively. In this paper, an analytical solution cosistent for the case of impulsive motion of a body is obtained by including the effect of surface tension. From the characteristics of the newly obtained solution, a critical value associated with an oscillating phenomenon is found, and further more, it is shown that the oscillating phenomenon does not appear in the region where the distance form the intersection point is less than this critical value.

  • The conventional reinforced earth retaining wall has the connector system to fix the reinforcement and block. However, this system defect may cause the crack of block and the rupture of reinforcement due to the stress concentration near the face of reinforced earth retaining wall. Hence, the new connector system which was able to allow the settlement of reinforcement was developed in this study and a test was carried out in the study area which is divided into the conventional reinforced earth retaining wall and reinforced Earth Retaining Wall driving the settlement. As the results of field monitoring in situ, the ratio of tensile force calculated at maximum value on contiguous portion of front block showed that the settlement type decreased the stress concentration near the face of front block greater than the conventional type.

  • The pulsed electro-acoustic method was used as a nondestructive measurement technique of spare charge distribution in dielectric materials. In our work presented here, we measured simultaneously the space charge distribution and conduction current in the low-density polyethylene samples with elevated temperatures up to $80^{\circ}C$ and electric field up to 20kV/mm. In the temperature less than $50^{\circ}C$, homocharges are mainly accumulated close to the electrodes under DC bias and after grounding. At the temperature exeeds $50^{\circ}C$, heterocharges are accumulated near the opposite electrode under DC bias. However after grounding the upper electrode, this charges immediately disappeared. The conduction current in LDPE at $20^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$ was reduced slowly with increasing interval of applied voltage. But as temperature increased, the conduction current tended to increase slowly with the time and the degree of increase is enlarged.

  • At local, galaxy properties are well known to be clearly different in different environments. However, it is still an open question how this environment-dependent trend has been shaped. In this presentation, we will show the results of our investigation about the evolution of star-formation properties of galaxies over a wide redshift range, from z~2 to z~0.5, focusing its dependence on their stellar mass and environment. In the UKIDSS/UDS region, we estimated photometric redshifts and stellar population properties, such as stellar masses and star-formation rates, using the deep optical and near-infrared data available in this field. Then, we identified galaxy cluster candidates at z~0.5-2. Through the analysis and comparison of star-formation (SF) properties of galaxies in clusters and in field, we found interesting results regarding the evolution of SF properties of galaxies: (1) regardless of redshifts, stellar mass is a key parameter controlling quenching of star formation in galaxies; (2) At z<1, environmental effects become important at quenching star formation regardless of stellar mass of galaxies; and (3) However, the result of the environmental quenching is prominent only for low mass galaxies (M* < $10^{10}M_{\odot}$) since the star formation in most of high mass galaxies are already quenched at z > 1.

  • Accurately estimating black hole (BH) masses at high redshifts is imperative in the current and future era of large-area extragalactic spectroscopic surveys. We present an extension of existing comparisons between rest-frame UV and optical virial BH mass estimators to intermediate redshifts, lower luminosities, and lower BH masses, comparable to the local $H{\beta}$ reverberation-mapping sample. We use data from the AGES survey and also newly acquired near-infrared spectra from the FMOS instrument on Subaru telescope for 89 broad-lined active galaxies at redshifts between 0.5 and 1.6. We focus on the MgII, CIV, and CIII broad emission lines and compare them to both $H{\alpha}$ and $H{\beta}$, using two different prescriptions to describe their emission profile width. We confirm that MgII shows a tight correlation with $H{\alpha}$, with a scatter of ~0.25 dex. The CIV and CIII estimators can be considered viable virial mass estimators, despite large scatter values. We combine our dataset with previous high redshift and high luminosity CIV and CIII measurements from the literature and we calculate a scatter of $\sim0.4$ dex and an offset to the 1:1 relation consistent with 0 for the combined sample. This updated comparison spans a total of 4 decades in BH mass, a much wider range than any previous individual study.
