In this review, the studies on the electrochemical properties of $TiO_2$ nanotube as an anode material of lithium-ion battery, which was prepared by an alkaline hydrothermal reaction and anneling process, were investigated andanalyzed in terms of charge-dischage characteristics. Up to date, a maximum discharge capacity of $338mAh\;g^{-1}$(x=1.01) was achieved by the nanotube with $TiO_2(B)$ phase, whereas the theoretical capacity of $TiO_2$ anode was $335mAh\;g^{-1}$(x=1) in the basis of $Li_xTiO_2$ as a product of electrochemical reaction between $TiO_2$ and lithium. This was due to fast lithium transport by a shortened diffusion path provided by controlling the nanostructure of $TiO_2$, because the self-diffusion of lithium was slow in a basis of its activation energy as 0.48 eV. Due to an excellent ion storage capabilities in both the surface and the bulk phase, the $TiO_2$ nanotube could be a promising active material as both an anode of lithium-ion battery and an electrode of capacitor with high-rate performances.

Mesoporous tin oxide (meso-$SnO_2$) with 5 nm mesopore and well-aligned $SnO_2$ nanowire-bundles with 5~7 nm diameters were prepared by template synthesis method. In addition to meso-$SnO_2$, meso-$SnO_2$/$SiO_2$, which has almost the same structure as meso-$SnO_2$ including $SiO_2$ used as the template were prepared by the modification of template synthesis. X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, transmission electron microscopy observed structures of meso-$SnO_2$ and meso-$SnO_2$/$SiO_2$. Although the meso-$SnO_2$/$SiO_2$ showed some positive evidences to suppress the volume change of meso-$SnO_2$ through cyclic voltammogram, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and voltage profiles during cycling, its cycle life was not improved highly to address modified structural effects. Thus, further study might be done to control the nanostructure of meso-$SnO_2$/$SiO_2$ for enhanced cycle performance.
Since the discovery of fullerenes as a class of nanostructure compounds, many potential applications have been suggested for their unusual structures and properties. The isolated pentagon rule (IPR) states that all pentagonal carbon rings are isolated in the most stable fullerene. Fullerenes $C_n$ are a class of spherical carbon allotrope group with unique properties. Electron transfer between fullerenes and other molecules is thought to involve the transfer of electrons between the molecules surrounding the fullerene cage. One class of electron transfer molecules is the methanofullerene derivatives ([6,6]-phenyl $C_{61}$-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM), 4-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-[6,6]-phenyl $C_{61}$-butyric acid methyl ester (p-EHO-PCBM), and 4-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-[6,6]-phenyl $C_{61}$-butyric acid (p-EHO-PCBA), 10-12). It has been determined that $C_{60}$ does not obey IPR. Supramolecular complexes 1-9 and 10-12 are shown to possess a previously unreported host.guest interaction for electron transfer processes. The unsaturated, cis-geometry, thiocrown ethers, (1-9) (described as [X-UT-Y], where X and Y indicate the numbers of carbon and sulfur atoms, respectively), are a group of crown ethers that display interesting physiochemical properties in the light of their conformational restriction compared with a corresponding saturated system, as well as the sizes of their cavities. Topological indices have been successfully used to construct mathematical methods that relate structural data to various chemical and physical properties. To establish a good relationship between the structures of 1-9 with 10-12, a new index is introduced, ${\mu}_{cs}$. This index is the ratio of the sum of the number of carbon atoms ($n_c$) and the number of sulfur atoms ($n_s$) to the product of these two numbers for 1-9. In this study, the relationships between this index and oxidation potential ($^{ox}E_1$) of 1-9, as well as the first to third free energies of electron transfer (${\Delta}G_{et(n)}$, for n = 1-3, which is given by the Rehm-Weller equation) between 1-9 and PCBM, p-EHO-PCBM, and p-EHO-PCBA (10-12) as [X-UT-Y]@R(where R is the adduct PCBM, p-EHO-PCBM, and p-EHO-PCBA group) (13-15) supramolecular complexes are presented and investigated.

Tin dioxide, $SnO_2$, is applied as an anode material in Li-ion batteries and a gas sensing materials, which shows changes in resistance in the presence of gas molecules, such as $H_2$, NO, $NO_2$ etc. Considerable research has been done on the synthesis of $SnO_2$ nanostructures. Nanomaterials exhibit a high surface to volume ratio, which means it has an advantage in sensing gas molecules and improving the specific capacity of Li-ion batteries. In this study, $SnO_2$ nanostructures were grown on a Si substrate using a thermal CVD process with the vapor transport method. The carrier gas was mixed with high purity Ar gas and oxygen gas. The crystalline phase of the as-grown tin oxide nanostructures was affected by the oxygen gas flow rate. The crystallographic property of the as-grown tin oxide nanostructures were investigated by Raman spectroscopy and XRD. The morphology of the as-grown tin oxide nanostructures was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. As a result, the $SnO_2$ nanostructures were grown directly on Si wafers with moderate thickness and a nanodot surface morphology for a carrier gas mixture ratio of Ar gas 1000 SCCM : $O_2$ gas 10 SCCM.

The manufacturing cost of thin-film photovoltics can potentially be lowered by minimizing the amount of a semiconductor material used to fabricate devices. Thin-film solar cells are typically only a few micrometers thick, whereas crystalline silicon (c-Si) wafer solar cells are $180{\sim}300\mu}m$ thick. As such, thin-film layers do not fully absorb incident light and their energy conversion efficiency is lower compared with that of c-Si wafer solar cells. Therefore, effective light trapping is required to realize commercially viable thin-film cells, particularly for indirect-band-gap semiconductors such as c-Si. An emerging method for light trapping in thin film solar cells is the use of metallic nanostructures that support surface plasmons. Plasmon-enhanced light absorption is shown to increase the cell photocurrent in many types of solar cells, specifically, in c-Si thin-film solar cells and in poly-Si thin film solar cell. By proper engineering of these structures, light can be concentrated and coupled into a thin semiconductor layer to increase light absorption. In many cases, silver (Ag) nanoparticles (NP) are formed either on the front surface or on the rear surface on the cells. In case of poly-Si thin film solar cells, Ag NPs are formed on the rear surface of the cells due to longer wavelengths are not perfectly absorbed in the active layer on the first path. In our cells, shorter wavelengths typically 300~500 nm are also not effectively absorbed. For this reason, a new concept of plasmonic nanostructure which is NPs formed both the front - and the rear - surface is worth testing. In this simulation Al NPs were located onto glass because Al has much lower parasitic absorption than other metal NPs. In case of Ag NP, it features parasitic absorption in the optical frequency range. On the other hand, Al NP, which is non-resonant metal NP, is characterized with a higher density of conduction electrons, resulting in highly negative dielectric permittivity. It makes them more suitable for the forward scattering configuration. In addition to this, Ag NP is located on the rear surface of the cell. Ag NPs showed good performance enhancement when they are located on the rear surface of our cells. In this simulation, Al NPs are located on glass and Ag NP is located on the rear Si surface. The structure for the simulation is shown in figure 1. Figure 2 shows FDTD-simulated absorption graphs of the proposed and reference structures. In the simulation, the front of the cell has Al NPs with 70 nm radius and 12.5% coverage; and the rear of the cell has Ag NPs with 157 nm in radius and 41.5% coverage. Such a structure shows better light absorption in 300~550 nm than that of the reference cell without any NPs and the structure with Ag NP on rear only. Therefore, it can be expected that enhanced light absorption of the structure with Al NP on front at 300~550 nm can contribute to the photocurrent enhancement.

Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) have drawn great academic attention due to their potential as low-cost renewable energy sources. DSCs contain a nanostructured TiO2 photoanode, which is a key-component for high conversion efficiency. Particularly, one-dimensional (1-D) nanostructured photoanodes can enhance the electron transport for the efficient collection to the conducting substrate in competition with the recombination processes. This is because photoelectron colletion is determined by trapping/detrapping events along the site of the electron traps (defects, surface states, grain boundaries, and self-trapping). Therefore, 1-D nanostructured photoanodes are advantageous for the fast electron transport due to their desirable features of greatly reduced intercrystalline contacts with specified directionality. In particular, anodic TiO2 nanotube (NT) electrodes recently have been intensively explored owing to their ideal structure for application in DSCs. Besides the enhanced electron transport properties resulted from the 1-D structure, highly ordered and vertically oriented nanostructure of anodic TiO2 NT can contribute additional merits, such as enhanced electrolyte diffusion, better interfacial contact with viscous electrolytes. First, to confirm the advantages of 1-D nanostructured material for the photoelectron collection, we compared the electron transport and charge recombination characteristics between nanoparticle (NP)- and nanorod (NR)-based photoanodes in DSCs by the stepped light-induced transient measurements of photocurrent and voltage (SLIM-PCV). We confirmed that the electron lifetime of the NR-based photoanode was much longer than that of the NP-based photoanode. In addition, highly ordered and vertically oriented TiO2 NT photoanodes were prepared by electrochemical anodization method. We compared the photovoltaic properties of DSCs utilizing TiO2 NT photoanodes prepared by one-step anodization and two-step anodization. And, to reduce the charge recombination rate, energy barrier layer (ZnO, Al2O3)-coated TiO2 NTs also applied in DSC. Furthermore, we applied the TiO2 NT photoanode in DSCs using a viscous electrolyte, i.e., cobalt bipyridyl redox electrolyte, and confirmed that the pore structure of NT array can enhance the performances of this viscous electrolyte.

The nano-surface modification techniques could be classified; internal modifications which enhance surface roughness and porosity in nano level and external modifications as nano particle coating. Nano-modified implant surface has various morphograpies such as nanotube, nanopit, nanonodule and polymorphic structures. Creating surface depends upon preparation method and material, however, there is no standard preparation technique not yet. The nano-modified surfacet is electrochemically stable comparing with the surface modified in micron level. Nano-modified surface has little cytotoxicity, stimulates osteoblast proliferation and differentiation. Moreover, it decreases soft tissue intervention by interrupting the proliferation of fibroblast. Nanostructure has similar size and shape with cells and proteins, consequently leads to good biocompatibility and enhanced osseointegration. However, the actual effect in vivo is limited, due to the distance of effect. Even if nano-modified surface has antibiotic property due to photocatalysis, short duration time makes clinical application questionable. Further investigations should focus on the optimal nano-modified surface, which has many potentials.

Vanadium dioxide, $VO_2$, is a thermochromic material that exhibits a reversible metal-insulator phase transition at $68^{\circ}C$, which accompanies rapid changes in the optical and electronic properties. To decrease the transition temperature around room temperature, a number of studies have been performed. The phase transition temperature of 1D nanowire $VO_2$ with a 100 nm diameter was reported to be approximately $29^{\circ}C$. In this study, 1D or 2D nanostructured $VO_2$ was grown using the vapor transport method. Vanadium dioxide has a different morphology with the same growth conditions for different substrates. The 1D nanowires $VO_2$ were grown on a Si substrate ($Si{\setminus}SiO_2$(300 nm), whereas the 2D & 3D nanostructured $VO_2$ were grown on an exfoliated graphene nanosheet. The crystallographic properties of the 1D or 2D & 3D nanostructured $VO_2$, which were grown by thermal CVD, and exfoliated-transferred graphene nanosheets on a Si wafer which was used as substrate for the vanadium oxide nanostructures, were analyzed by Raman spectroscopy. The as-grown vanadium oxide nanostructures have a $VO_2$ phase, which are confirmed by Raman spectroscopy.

Metal oxide nanostructures are promising materials for advanced applications, such as high sensitive gas sensors, and high capacitance lithium-ion batteries. In this study, tin oxide (SnO) nanostructures were grown on a Si wafer substrate using a two-zone horizontal furnace system for a various substrate temperatures. The raw material of tin dioxide ($SnO_2$) powder was vaporized at $1070^{\circ}C$ in an alumina crucible. High purity Ar gas, as a carrier gas, was flown with a flow rate of 1000 standard cubic centimeters per minute. The SnO nanostructures were grown on a Si substrate at $350{\sim}450^{\circ}C$ under 545 Pa for 30 minutes. The surface morphology of the as-grown SnO nanostructures on Si substrate was characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Raman spectroscopy was used to confirm the phase of the as-grown SnO nanostructures. As the results, the as-grown tin oxide nanostructures exhibited a pure tin monoxide phase. As the substrate temperature was increased from $350^{\circ}C$ to $424^{\circ}C$, the thickness and grain size of the SnO nanostructures were increased. The SnO nanostructures grown at $450^{\circ}C$ exhibited complex polycrystalline structures, whereas the SnO nanostructures grown at $350^{\circ}C$ to $424^{\circ}C$ exhibited simple grain structures parallel to the substrate.
