Saccharomyces cerevisiae M3G3를 이용한 1,2-Propanediol의 생산 최적화 (1,2-Propanediol Production by Using Saccharomyces cerevisiae M3G3)

  • 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PD) is a commodity chemical that is currently produced from petrochemical derivatives. Saccharomyces cerevisiae is well characterized and a successful industrial microorganism to enable the improvement of the 1,2-propanediol production by metabolic engineering. A recombinant S. cerevisiae M3G3 was used to produce 1,2-propanediol. S. cerevisiae M3G3 is the diploid strain that contains 3 copies of mgs (methylglyoxal synthase) and gldA (glycerol dehydrogenase). S. cerevisiae M3G3 was cultivated at various culture conditions by changing culture temperature, glucose concentration, and inducer concentration. Also the effect of induction time was studied to optimize the production of 1,2-propanediol. Batch and fed-batch cultivation of S. cerevisiae M3G3 was performed by using a 5 L jar fermenter. The highest concentration of 1,2-propanediol in batch cultivation was 0.86 g/L and it was further improved to 1.33 g/L in fed-batch cultivation.

Optimum Design of Integer and Fractional-Order PID Controllers for Boost Converter Using SPEA Look-up Tables

  • This paper presents a method of designing optimal integer- and fractional-order proportional-integral-derivative (FOPID) controllers for a boost converter to gain a set of favorable characteristics at various operating points. A Pareto-based multi-objective optimization approach called strength Pareto evolutionary algorithm (SPEA) is used to obtain fast and low overshoot start-up and dynamic responses and switching stability. The optimization approach generates a set of optimal gains called Pareto set, which corresponds to a Pareto front. The Pareto front is a set of optimal results for objective functions. These results provide designers with a trade-off look-up table, in which they can easily choose any of the optimal gains based on design requirements. The SPEA also overcomes the difficulties of tuning the FOPID controller, which is an extension to the classic integer-order PID controllers and potentially promises better results. The proposed optimized FOPID controller provides an excellent start-up response and the desired dynamic response. This paper presents a detailed comparison of the optimum integer- and the fractional-order PID controllers. Extensive simulation and experimental results prove the superiority of the proposed design methodology to achieve a wide set of desired technical goals.

Role of Intergenic and 3'-Proximal Noncoding Regions in Coat Protein Expression and Replication of Barley yellow dwarf virus PAV

  • Barley yellow dwarf virus PAV (BYDV-PAV) has a 5.7-kb positive-sense single-stranded RNA genome that contains six open reading frames (ORFs). BYDV-PAV produces three subgenomic RNAs (sgRNAs). The largest of which encodes the coat, 17-kDa, and readthrough proteins from two initiation codons. To investigate the role of intergenic and 3'-proximal noncoding regions (NCRs) in coat protein (CP) expression and BYDV-PAV replication, a full-length infectious cDNA of the RNA genome of an Illinois isolate of BYDV-PAV was constructed downstream of the Cauliflower mosaic virus-35S promoter. Linear DNA molecules of these cDNAs were infectious, expressed the 22-kDa CP, and produced both genomic RNA sgRNAs in ratios similar to those observed in protoplasts inoculated with viral RNA. The portion of 5'NCR of sgRNA1 between ORFs 2 and 3 was not required for, but enhanced translation of CP from ORF3. Mutants containing deletions in the NCR downstream of ORF5 failed to replicate in oat protoplasts. These results indicate that an intact 3$^1$NCR is required for BYDV-PAV replication.

The status of clinical trials regarding root canal sealers

  • Objectives: This study aimed to present the results and analyses of clinical trials, including updates on the different functions of root canal sealers. Materials and Methods: In June 2023, we performed a comprehensive search of ClinicalTrials.gov to identify interventional clinical trials pertaining to root canal sealers. In total, 23 clinical trials conducted up to June 2023 were included in this study. Results: Approximately half of the trials (11 out of 23) were completed, while none were terminated or withdrawn. Each included trial had a minimum of 10 participants, with 11 trials having more than 100 participants. None of the assessed trials provided outcomes, and the majority (17 out of 23) lacked associated publications. In terms of geographic distribution, the USA and Canada did not contribute to any root canal sealer trials. Conclusions: This study highlights the lack of diversity in trial locations, the absence of reported results, and a scarcity of clinical trials examining the physicochemical properties of different sealers. Most published trials primarily focused on assessing the post-operative pain effect of these sealers, but no significant difference was found regarding post-operative pain control.

Correction Factors for Quantitative Analysis of Anchovy Eggs and Larval Stages from the Southern Waters of Korea

  • Correction factors based on the catch ratios of egg and larval densities in the southern waters of Korea were estimated for anchovy Engraulis japonica. This was undertaken in order to adjust ichthyoplankton data from different sampling methods, gear types and time. Samples were collected during ichthyop1ankton surveys in Korean waters from 1983 to 1994. The ratios for egg densities obtained in vertical tows with a NORPAC net (ring $\Phi$, 45 cm) compared to those obtained in oblique tows with a KOB net (ring $\Phi$, 80 cm) were 0.86 (CV = 0.65), 1.22 (CV = 0.36), and 0.93 (CV = 0.42) for early, middle, and later developmental stages, respectively. The ratios for larval densities for vertical and oblique tows varied depending on size. For yolk-sac and small larvae (< 4 mm), the ratios were 3.08 (CV = 0.45) and 1.98 (CV = 1.34), while those of 4-6 mm, 6-8 mm, and 8-10 mm larvae were 0.44 (CV = 1.31), 0.45 (CV = 1.70), and 0.56 (CV = 2.50), respectively. Ratios of day/night densities for larvae of 4-10 mm lengths were lower (0.01-0.06) in offshore catches than values obtained in coastal areas (0.440.46) and similar values (0.16-0.04) for vertical and oblique tows. Our results indicated that vertical towing is more efficient for sampling early life stages (from eggs to larvae less than 4 mm long), while oblique towing is more efficient for larvae longer than 4 mm due to depth preferences for each developmental stage (e.g., changes in egg buoyancy and vertical migration oflarvae).

  • This paper delves into the recent 'paintings' of African-American artist David Hammons, which combine rubbish-like plastic wraps with the abstract-expressionist style paintings. In straddling between rubbish and art object, his works tend to blur the boundary drawn between two opposite categories in value, art and garbage, provoking the sophisticated taste of Upper-East-side white community in Manhattan, New York. Choosing the venue of his exhibition at a commercial gallery, Hammons's creative efforts is also a critique of what can be seen as the dominance of abstract expressionism and white elitism in American art history. The artist is known for his use of unconventional materials in art making such as black hair, barbecue bones, and elephant droppings, ones that are often associated with African-American experiences in all different levels. Since his debut in the art scene in the 1970s, Hammons has pursued the view of art-making as a medium for provoking contentious issues of racial relations in the States. On the other hand, the reception of Hammons's work as African-American art can be potentially quite limiting, overlooking as it does multi-faceted meanings of his art practice. His unconventional approach to art often took him outside art galleries and museums, where he was seen using a variety of common materials for site-specific installations and performances. Staged in different parts of Manhattan, these acts of art making traverse seemingly opposite communities and cultures, often blurring their boundaries. Hammons's artistic practice can label him what Abdul Jan Mohamed calls "specular border intellectual", revealing as it does the symbiosis of binary oppositions that is basic to the experience of communnal living.

미세전류 전기자극이 흰쥐의 화상에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Microcurrent Electrostimulation on the Burn of Rats)

  • Purpose: This study aims to examine effect of microcurrent electrostimulation on burn healing by electric intensity and of which the electric intensity on the acute burn being cured with microcurrent electrostimulation therapy. Methods: 28 Sprague Dawley Rats is classified into a control group of 8 rats, an experimental group I of 10 rats and an experimental group II of 10 rats. The control group is not cured, the experimental group I is exposed to 10 Hz, and $100{\mu}A$ with microcurrent electrostimulation, and the experimental group II is exposed to 10 Hz, $300{\mu}A$ for 15 minutes a day. The next day, 2th, 4th, and 6th day after rats is burned. Result: There are not significant differences of length change of the burn cure between the control group, the experimental group I, and the experimental group II by a period. However, systematically hair follicle cell on the 2th day and epidermal cell on the 6th day turn up in the experimental group I, and the experimental group II. Inquiry: Nancy(1994) did not obtain the desired result when the skin of a pig is exposed to 0.1 Hz, and $100{\mu}A$ for wound healing. In the result of the study, when burn length is measured on the 2th, 4th, and 6th to see the length change of acute burn, there is not significant differences among 3 groups. Conclusion: Statistically, there is not significant differences of the length change between 3 groups. However, systematically the burn is cured faster in the experimental group I, and the experimental group II than in the contrast group.

  • The first and the longest criminal indictment case of Korean medico-legal battle, so called BORAMAE Hospital Incident, was finally on its end by Korean Supreme Court's decision on June 24, 2004, after 7 years long legal dispute via Seoul District Court and Seoul Superior Appeal Court's decision. Boramae Hospital case was the first Korean legal case of Withdrawing Life-sustaining treatment of mechanical respirator on 58 years old Extradural Hematoma victim who was on Respirator under Coma after multi-organ failure postoperatively(APACHE II score: 34-39). Two physicians who have involved patient's care and had helped to make discharge the Near-death patient to home after repeated demand of patient's wife, due to economic reason, were sentenced as homicidal crime. This review article will discuss the following items with the review of US cases, Quinlan(1976), Nancy Cruzan(1990), Barber (1983), Helen Wanglie(1990), Baby K (1994) and Baby L cases, along with Official Statement of ATS and other Academic dignitaries of US and World.: [1] Details of Boramae Hospital incident, medical facts description and legal language of homicidal crime sentence. [2] The medical dispute about the legal misinterpretation of patient's clinical status, regarding the severity of the victim with multi-organs failure on Respirator under coma with least chance of recovery, less than 10% probability. [3] Case study of US, of similar situation. [4] Introduction of ATS official Statement on Withdrawing/ Withholding Life sustaining treatment. [5] Patient Autonomy as basic principle. [6] The procedural formality in Medical practise for keeping the legitimacy. [7] The definition of Medical Futility and its dispute. [8] Dying in Dignity and PAS(Physician Assisted Suicide)/and/or Euthanasia [9] The Korean version of "Dying in Dignity", based on the Supreme Court's decision of Boramae Hospital incident (2004.6.24.) D-Limonene mitigate myocardial injury in rats through MAPK/ERK/NF-κB pathway inhibition

  • Cardiovascular diseases are the primary reason of mortality, among which myocardial infarction (MI) is the most dominant and prevalent. This study was considered to examine D-Limonene protective action against isoproterenol (ISO) induced MI. Wister male rats were dispersed into four groups. Normal and D-Limonene control group in which rats administered saline or D-Limonene. ISO control animals were administered saline for 21 days then challenged with ISO (85 mg/kg, subcutaneously) on 20th and 21st day for MI induction. D-Limonene pretreated group in which animals were pretreated with D-Limonene 50 mg/kg orally for 21 days then administered ISO on 20th and 21st day. MI prompted variations were assessed by myocardial infarction area determination, blood pressure (BP) alterations, cardiac injury biomarkers and inflammatory mediators measurements. For more depth investigation, both the apoptotic status was evaluated via measuring mRNA expression of Bcl-2 and Bax as well as mitogen-activated protein kinase-extracellular signal-regulated kinase (MAPK-ERK) signal transduction were investigated via Western blotting. MI group revealed significant infarcted area, blood pressure alterations, myocardial injury enzymes intensification together with inflammatory cytokines amplification. MI was associated with activation of MAPK-ERK signal pathway and apoptotic status within the myocardium. On the other hand, pretreated with D-Limonene demonstrated deterred infracted area, reduced myocardial enzymes, improved BP indices, lessened inflammatory levels. Furthermore, D-Limonene pretreatment caused a decline in MAPK proteins pathway and Bax relative mRNA expression, while intensifying Bcl-2 mRNA expression promoting that D-Limonene may constrain MI induced myocardial apoptosis. D-Limonene mitigated MI injury through MAPK/NF-κB pathway inhibition and anti-apoptotic effect.

Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening and Associated Factors among Older Adult Women in South Africa

  • Background: Little is known about the cancer screening prevalence and correlates in older adults from different racial backgrounds. In the context of heightened efforts for prevention and early diagnosis, we collected information on screening for two major types of cancers: cervical and breast cancer in order to establish their prevalence estimates and correlates among older South African women who participated in the Study of Global Ageing and Adults Health (SAGE) in 2008. Materials and Methods: We conducted a national population-based cross-sectional study with a multi-stage stratified cluster sample of 3,840 individuals aged 50 years or older in South Africa in 2008. In this analysis, we only considered the female subsample of (n=2202). The measures used included socio-demographic characteristics, health variables, anthropometric and blood pressure measurements. Multivariable regression analysis was performed to assess the association of socio-demographic factors, health variables and cancer screening. Results: Overall, regarding cervical cancer screening, 24.3% ever had a Papanicolaou (PAP) smear test, and regarding breast cancer screening, 15.5% ever had a mammography. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, younger age, higher education, being from the White or Coloured population group, urban residence, greater wealth, and suffering from two or more chronic conditions were associated with cervical cancer screening, and higher education, being from the White or Indian/Asian population group, greater wealth, having a health insurance, and suffering from two or more chronic condtions were associated with breast cancer screening. Conclusions: Cancer screening coverage remains low among elderly women in South Africa in spite of the national guideline recommendations for regular screening in order to reduce the risk of dying from these cancers if not detected early. There is a need to improve accessibility and affordability of early cervical and breast cancer screening for all women to ensure effective prevention and management of cervical and breast cancer.
