  • One of the limitation for Agrobacterium-mediated transformation via organogenesis from cotyledon explants routinely in cucumber is the production of chimeric plants. To overcome the limitation, Agrobacterium-mediated transformation system via somatic embryogenesis from hypocotyl explants of cucumber (c.v., Eunsung) on the selection medium with paromomycin as antibiotics was developed. The hypocotyl explants were inoculated with Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain EHA101 carrying binary vector pPTN290; then were subsequently cultured on the following media: co-cultivation medium for 2 days, selection medium for $5{\times}14$ days, and regeneration medium. The T-DNA of the vector (pPTN290) carried two cassettes, Ubi promoter-gus gene as reporter and 35S promoter-nptll gene conferring resistance to paromomycin as selectable agent. The confirmation of stable transformation and the efficiency of transformation was based on the resistance to paromomycin indicated by the growth of putative transgenic calli on selection medium amended with 100mg/L paromomycin, and GUS gene expression. Forty eight clones (5.2%) with GUS gene expressed of 56 callus clones with resistance to paromomycin were independently obtained from 928 explants inoculated. Of 48 clones, transgenic plants were only regenerated from 5 clones (0.5%) at low frequency. The histochemical GUS assay in the transgenic seeds ($T_1$) also revealed that the gus gene was successfully integrated and segregated into each genome of transgenic cucumber.

  • Purpose: This study examined the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on the static balance ability of patients with back pain. Methods: The subjects comprised of 30 males and females in their 20s, who were divided into two groups with and without tDCS. The balance posture ratio score was calculated to determine the changes in balance ability before and after the application of tDCS using balance equipment. A paired t-test was conducted to determine the changes over time, and an independent t-test was performed to determine the changes between the groups. The significance level was set to ${\alpha}=0.05$. Results: A significant difference in the changes in the static balance ability of CTDCSG between before and after applying tDCS was observed while the subjects' eyes were open (p<0.05). A comparison between the groups after the experiments revealed significantly increased changes in CTDCSG compared to STDCSE (p<0.05). The changes in static balance ability were not significant when the subjects' eyes were closed (p>0.05). Conclusion: The application of tDCS positively changed the static balance ability of patients with back pain. The results of this study showed that tDCS could be used as an intervention to increase the static balance ability of patients with back pain in the clinical field. The study results could be used further as foundational data for future studies on tDCS.

  • When sewage and industrial wastewater are treated to improve the coastal water quality, we usually consider the reduction of BOD and/or COD. Due to the inflow of untreated nitrogen and phosphorus, however, the coastal water has eutrophicated. Thus, to improve the water qualify, it is necessary to treat and reduce nitrogen and phosphorus which are the factors limiting algal growth. Hence, with regard to the adaption of Ocean Outfall for the treatment of wastewater in Suyoung Bay, we studied the effectiveness and environmental assessment of Ocean Outfall of which cost is lower than that of advanced treatment, The effectiveness of Ocean Outfall of the second treatment effluent in Nambu S.T.P. was simulated, using the eco-hydrodynamic model as far field model the result showed that the water quality of coastal area receiving wastewater on the surface sea has improved. But the concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus around the diffuser of Ocean Outfall system can cause many problems on estuary, such as red tide, eutrophication and aquatic toxicity.
