  • In this paper, we derive exact closed-form formulas, in terms of Meijer's G-function, for the ergodic capacity of space-time block codes (STBCs) from generalized linear complex orthogonal designs (GLCODs) and generalized coordinate interleaved orthogonal designs (GCIODs) in quasi-static frequency-nonselective i.i.d. Nakagami-m fading channels. The derived analytical results show an excellent agreement with Monte-Carlo simulation results. Thus, a useful means for analyzing and predicting the ergodic capacity performance of STBCs from GLCODs or GCIODs can be provided in various antenna configurations and different channel conditions without extensive Monte-Carlo simulations. We present some numerical results to verify the accuracy of the derived formulas.

  • In this paper we analyze the performance improvement of the M-ary FSK systems for low power and low data rate applications. This contribution presents a unified analysis of its MRC diversity, uncoded and performance in A WGN, m=2, m=3, Rayleigh and one sided Gaussian fading channels using optimum noncoherent demodulation with Reed-Solomon(RS) codes. The results of this paper should be useful as benchmarks of obtainable performance and as a reference for validating the results of simulation studies when slow fading models are applicable.

  • In this paper, we investigate the performance of convolutional coded DS/CDMA system equipped with a noncoherent M-ary orthogonal modulation scheme, and operating in multi-user environments over slow and freuency nonselective Nakagami-m fading channels with an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). An expression for the pariwise error probability that can be used to compute the upper bound of coded system is first derived. performance of the DS/CDMA system with and without the convolutional codes are then compared. We have obsered that the convolutional coded can compensate the degradation quite well in multi-user situations over the Nakagami fading channels with the AWGN. For the case of an extreme fading, however, it has been seen that the convolutional code reaches its limit to improve the overall system performance as the number of users increse.

  • Using a method recently reported in the literature for analyzing the bit error probability (BEP) performance of noncoherent Mary orthogonal signals with square-law combining in the presence of independent and identically distributed Nakagami-m faded paths, we are able to reformulate this method so as to apply to a generalized fading channel in which the fading in each path need not be identically distributed nor even distributed ac-cording to the same family of distribution. The method leads to exact expressions for the BEP in the form of a finite-range integral whose integrand involves the moment generating function of the combined signal-to-noise ratio and which can therefore be readily evaluated numerically. The mathematical formalism is illustrated by applying the method to some selected numerical examples of interest showing the impact of the multipath intensity profile (MIP) as well as the fading correlation profile (FCP) on the BEP performance of M-ary orthogonal signal over Nakagami-m fading channels. Thses numerical results show that both MIP and FCP induce a non-negligible degradition in the BEP and have therefore to be taken into account for the accurate prediction of the performance of such systems.

  • Spectrum sensing is a key technical challenge for cognitive radio (CR). It is well known that multi-cycle cyclostationarity (MC) detector is a powerful method for spectrum sensing. However, conventional MC detector is difficult to implement due to its high computational complexity. This paper pays attention to the fact that the computation complexity can be reduced by simplifying the test statistic of conventional MC detector. Based on this simplification process, an improved MC detector is proposed. Compared with the conventional one, the proposed detector has the low-computational complexity and sufficient-accuracy on sensing performance. Subsequently, the sensing performances are further investigated for the cases of Rayleigh, Nakagami-m, Rician, composite Rayleigh fading-lognormal shadowing and composite Nakagami fading-lognormal shadowing channels, respectively. Furthermore, the square-law combining (SLC) is introduced to improve the detection capability over fading-shadowing channels. The corresponding closed-form expressions of average detection probability are derived for each case by the moment generation function (MGF) approach. Finally, illustrative and analytical results show that the efficiency and reliability of proposed detector and the improvement on sensing performance by SLC over composite fading-shadowing channels.

  • In this paper, we analyze the performance of a cooperative communication wireless network over independent and identically distributed (IID) Nakagami-m fading channels. A simple transmission scheme is considered where the relay is operating in amplify-forward (AF) mode. A closed-form expression for symbol error rate (SER) is obtained using the moment generating function (MGF) of the total signal to noise ratio (SNR) of the transmitted signal with binary phase shift keying (BPSK).

  • In this paper, we represent Nakagami-m fading channel as finite-State Markov Channel (FSMC) and analyze the performance of wireless communication system with varying the fading channel condition. In FSMC model, the received signal's SNR is divided into finite intervals and these intervals are formed into Markov chain states. Each state is modeled by a BSC and the transition probability is dependent upon the physical characterization of the channel. The steady state probability and average symbol error rate of each state and transition probability are derived by numerical analysis and FSMC model is formed with these values. We found that various fading channels can be represented with FSMC by changing state transition index. In fast fading environment in which state transition index is large, the channel can be viewed as i.i.d. channel and on the contrary, in slow fading channel where state transition index is small, the channel can be represented by simple FSMC model in which transitions occur between just adjacent states. And we applied the proposed FSMC model to analyze the coding gain of random error correcting code on various fading channels via computer simulation.

  • Recently, efficient partial relay selection (e-PRS) was proposed as an enhanced version of PRS. In comparing e-PRS, PRS, and the best relay selection (BRS), there is a tradeoff between complexity and performance; that is, the complexity for PRS, e-PRS, and BRS is low to high, respectively, but vice versa for performance. In this paper, we study the outage probability for e-PRS in decode-and-forward (DF) relaying systems over non-identical Nakagami-m fading channels, where the fading parameter m is an integer. In particular, we provide closed-form expressions of the exact outage probability and asymptotic outage probability for e-PRS in DF relaying systems. Numerical results show that e-PRS achieves similar outage performance to that of BRS for a low or medium signal-to-noise ratio, a high fading parameter, a small number of relays, and a large difference between the average channel powers for the first and the second hops.

  • We derive and analyze a bit error rate(BER) expression of a Gray coded rectangular QAM(R-QAM) signal with maximal ratio combining diversity(MRC) reception over Nakagami-n(Rician) fading channels. The derived result is provided in terms of the Whittaker function and the confluent hypergeometric function. In addition, by performance comparison with M-PSK, we see the Nakagami-n fading channel characteristics. Because the derived expression is general, it can readily allow numerical e·valuation for various cases of practical interest such as line-of-sight (LOS) or satellite communication channel analysis.

  • The performances of M-ary signals using L-branch maximum ratio combining (MRC) diversity reception in correlated Nakagami fading channels are derived theoretically. The coherent reception of M-ary differential phase shift keying (MDPSK), phase shift keying (MPSK), and quadrature amplitude modulation (MQAM) is considered. It is assumed that the fading parameters in each diversity branch are identical. The general formula for evaluating symbol error rate (SER) of M-ary signals in the independent branch diversity system is presented using the integral-form expressions. Until now, results did not extend to the various M-ary case for a coherent reception. The numerical results presented in this paper are expected to provide information for the design of radio system using M-ary modulation method for above mentioned channel environment.
