Abstract Salmonella pathogenicity island 1 (SPI1) gene expression is regulated by many environmental signals such as oxygen, osmolarity, and pH. Here, we examined changes in the expression level of various regulatory proteins encoded within SPI1 in response to three different concentrations of NaCl, using primer extension analysis. Transcription of all the regulatory genes tested was activated most when Salmonella were grown in Luria Broth (LB) containing 0.17 M NaCl. The expression of hilA, invF, and hilD was decreased in the presence of 0.47 M NaCl or in the absence of NaCl, while hilC expression was almost constant regardless of the NaCl concentration when Salmonella were grown to exponential phase under low-oxygen condition. The reduced expression of hilA, invF, and hilD resulted in lower invasion of hilC mutant to the cultured animal cells when the mutant was grown in the presence of 0.47 M NaCl or in the absence of NaCl prior to infection. Among the proteins secreted via the SPI1-type III secretion system (TTSS), the level of sopE2 expression was not influenced by medium osmolarity. Various effects of osmolarity on virulence gene regulation observed in this study is one example of multiple regulatory pathways used by Salmonella to cause infection.

Sandy dust phenomena was observed from April 19 to 23, 1988 in Seoul. During this period it rained and the precipitation was collected to investigate the rain chemistry. This study was carried out to analyzed the chemical composition of precipitation by the measurements of conditivity, cations $(H^+, NH_4^+, K^+, Na^+, Ca^{2+}, MG^{2+})$, and anions $(SO_4^{2-}, NO_3^-, Cl^-, F^-, Br^-)$ which are believed to be the major ions playing an important role in the acidity of rain water. During the period of sandy dust phenomena the range of pH value and conductivity concentration of rainwater were 6.0-6.7, 172-254 $\mu \mho/cm$. The anions and cations concentrations increased and the orders of these concentrations were $SO_4^{2-} > Cl^- > NO_3^- > Na^+ > Ca^{2+} > NH_4^+ > Mg^{2+}$. THe principal chemical compounds of rainwater were estimated at $(NH_4)_2 SO_4, CaSO_4, NaCl, and MgCl_2$.
Pitting corrosion of TiN film deposited on Inconel 600 by plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition (PACVD) was investigated. Cyclic potentiodynamic polarization (CPP) tests were conducted in order to determine the pit nucleation potentials, Enp, of the TiN-deposited sample and the bare Inconel 600 in deaerated NaCl solution at 25, 135 and 20$0^{\circ}C$. The effects of the TiN film thickness, the solution temperature and the Cl- concentration on Enp were studied. Enp of the TiN-deposited sample which had the film thickness above 1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ were higher than those of the bare Inconel 600 by 300~600mV at all the solution temperatures, implying the pitting resistance improvement of the TiN film. The morphologies of the pits generated after immersion test were examined with a scaning electron microscopy. The higher was the solution temperature, the more corrosion products, mainly composed of Cr and Ni oxides, were formed.
Effects of oral administration of electrolyte solutions were studied in experimentally dehydrated adult sheep. By the latin square method five ruminal fistulated sheep were examined and dehydrated by deprivation of feed and water for 72 hours. Tap water, physiological saline, 0.45% NaCl+120 mM/L glucose and 0.9% NaCl+1% propylene glycol solution were orally administrated after dehydration, respectively. Rehydration effect and modification of the rumen function were compared. 1. After 72 hours of deprivation of feed and water, sheep were hypertonic dehydrated and blood acid-base parameters were not significantly changed. And there was marked increase in ruminal pH and decrease in ruminal total volatile fatty acid(VFA) concentration. 2. After the fluids administration the changes in blood acid-base parameters were not significant in all groups. 3. Although glucose fermentation in the rumen was observed, 0.45% NaCl+120 mM/L glucose was more effective in rehydration than physiological saline and tap water. But it was difficult to know the rehydration effect of 0.9% NaCl+1% propylene glycol solution exactly because of excessive increase in plasma osmolality. 4. After refeeding, total concentration and proportions of ruminal volatile fatty acid(VFA) were not significantly different among groups and recovered to normal concentration but not in proportions after 2 days in all groups. 5. In vitro cultured ruminal protozoa were susceptible to the decrease of the pH and osmolality.

This study was carried out to investigate the emulsifying properties of concentrated red ginseng extract (CRGE). First, we determined the interfacial tension of CRGE at the oil-water interface. Second, oil-in-water emulsions were prepared with CRGE and then their physicochemical properties such as fat globule size, zeta-potential, dispersion stability, and microscopic characteristics were determined. It was found that interfacial tension gradually decreased with increasing CRGE concentration, indicative of some surface activity. In emulsions, fat globule size was decreased as CRGE concentration increased, showing a critical value ($d_{43}$ ≒ $0.39{\mu}m$) at ${\geq}3.5wt%$ of CRGE. In addition, pH and NaCl also influenced on fat globule sizes; they were increased in acidic conditions ($pH{\leq}3$) or in higher NaCl concentration (${\geq}0.4M$) and these results were interpreted in view of the change in zeta potentials. The dispersion stability by separation analyzer ($LUMiFuge^{(R)}$) showed that it was more stable in emulsions with higher CRGE concentration (i.e., ${\geq}3.5wt%$). In conclusion, CRGE was surface-active and it could be used as an emulsifier in preparation of food emulsions.
Background and objective: Calcium chloride (CaCl2) and sodium chloride (NaCl) are commonly used as a deicing agent in South Korea and penetrate the soil on the roadside, causing damage to plants. This study was conducted to investigate the salinity reduction effect of Pennisetum alopecuroides and the chemical characteristics of soil leachate. Methods: The plants were treated with five different concentrations of CaCl2 (0, 1, 2, 5, and 10g·L-1) and were grouped into the Cont., C1, C2, C5, and C10 groups. CaCl2 of 200 m·L-1 was sprayed to each plant once every two weeks. The growth of P. alopecuroides (plant height, leaf length, leaf width and the number of leaves) was measured. The level of EC and pH, and exchangeable cations (K+, Ca2+, Na+, and Mg2+) in the leachate of soil was monitored. Results: The pH of soil leachate decreased as the CaCl2 concentration increased, and the EC increased significantly. The content of K+ did not change significantly until the concentration of CaCl2 reached 5 g·L-1, but the content of Ca2+, Na+, and Mg2+ significantly increased. The plant height, leaf length, and leaf width of P. alopecuroides showed the highest value in CaCl2 1 g·L-1 followed by CaCl2 2 g·L-1 and the control group. Root fresh weight was the highest in CaCl2 2 g·L-1. On the other hand, there was no change in the shoot fresh weight, dry weight and root dry weight, and P. alopecuroides growth inhibition at the concentration of 5 g·L-1 or higher in the plant height and leaf length. Conclusion: P. alopecuroides is relatively highly salt-tolerant and can improve the salt damaged soil by lowering the content of the salt-based exchangeable K+ ions.
The concentration of 50 mM Nacl inhibited the shoot growth of P. nigra ${\times}$ maximowiczii in viro culture. The punctured leaves have produced so many individuals on MS basal medium with cytokinin. Especially MS basal medium with BAP 0.8mg/l showed the best shoot performance in which the average number of shoots were 127.6. For selection of NaCl tolerance shoot of poplar, punctured leaves were inoculated on MS basal medium with BAP 0.8mg/l and various concentrations of NaCl(from 10 mM to 100 mM graded by 10 mM). On the medium with over 50mM of NaCl, 13.7 to 15.7 shoots were obtained. Especially on the medium with go mM and 100mM. 10.7 and 8.3 shoots, respectively. The shoots derived from control medium (non-NaCl) were depressed growth, while the selected shoots from MS with NaCl showed good growth performance on MS basal medium with 50 mM of NaCl. From this results, we suggested that the possibility of in vitro selection to tolerance for inorganic salts in forest tree species.

Salinity and drought stresses are probably the most significant abiotic factor limiting plant's growth, also negatively affect seed germination and early seedling development. To study on effect of NaCl and PEG stress on seed germination and gene expression pattern of tall fescue, the levels of NaCl and PEG-induced water stresses were determined in first experiment. Different concentration of NaCl (0 to 350 mM) and PEG (0 to 30%) were used for seed treatment. Seed Germination percentage reduced with increasing osmotic potential of growth medium either due to NaCl or PEG. Seeds were not germinate at 350 mM NaCl or 30% PEG treatment. On the basis of the results, Kentucky31(E-) had more resistant than Fawn in both stress conditions. Furthermore, we have used an annealing control primer-based differential display reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction method to identify salt- and drought stress-induced differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in tall fescue leaves. Using 120 annealing control primers, a total of 4 genes were identified and sequenced. The possible roles of the identified DEGs are discussed in the context of their putative role during salinity and drought stresses.

Manganese-Coated Sand(MCS) prepared with three different methods were applied in the treatment of soluble $Mn^{2+}$ in batch and column experiments. In the bench-scale MCS preparation, the coating efficiency of manganese on the surface of sand increased as the dosage of initial Mn(II) increased. The removed amount of the soluble $Mn^{2+}$ by MCS increased as the solution pH increased, following a typical anionic-type adsorption. The removed amounts of the soluble $Mn^{2+}$ through adsorption was quite similar over the entire pH range, without depending on the contents of Mn on the surface of sand as well as coating methods. When NaClO was used an oxidant, the removed amount of the soluble $Mn^{2+}$ by MCS increased as the concentration of NaClO increased, This trend might be explained by the increased removal efficiency through coating of manganese oxides produced from oxidation of the soluble $Mn^{2+}$ by NaClO on the surface of MCS. From the bench-scale column experiments, the breakthrough of $Mn^{2+}$ occurred after 4,100 bed volume without presence of NaClO while 1.6-times delayed breakthrough of $Mn^{2+}$ was observed in the presence of NaClO. This result also supports that the removal efficiency of the soluble $Mn^{2+}$ could be enhanced by using NaClO.
$(Pb_{1-x} La_x)(Zr_{0.65} Ti_{0.35})_{1-x/4}O_3$ (PLZT X/65/35) powders were prepared by molten salt synthesis using NaCl-K Cl and conventional calcining of oxides. The effects of molten salt on formation and charactrization of PLZT powder and on dielectric piezolectric and optical properties of PLZT ceramics were studied, The completed PLZT powder formation in the presence of fused salt was attained at 50-10$0^{\circ}C$ lower temperature than that in solid state reaction and the particle size of the powder made by molten salt synthesis was markedly increased with increasing calcining temperature. The substitution of Na and/or K ions in NaCl-KCl for Pb ion in process of molten salt synthesis was increased with increasing La concentration Z. These substituted Na and/or K ions were identified as the origins of decreasing coupl-ing factor and optical transmittance of PLZT ceramics.
