  • In this study, a newly constructed optical measurement system, whose main components were a parametric tunable laser and a near infrared photoelectric multiplier, was applied to detection of the information for the inside of Satsuma mandarin using time-of-flight near infrared spectroscopy (TOF-NIRS). The combined effects on the time resolved profile of sample diameter, sugar content, the wavelength of the laser beam, and the detection position of transmitted light were investigated in detail. The samples used were Satsuma mandarin (Citrus unshu $M^{ARC}$.) (location: Wakayama, Japan) having the diameters of 50-84 mm. The sugar content measured by a refractometer varied from 9.9 to 16.3 Brix%. Equator of sample was irradiated vertically with the pulsed laser, and transmitted output power was measured on the restricted position of the equator using the optical fiber cable. The sampling time and the number of averaging the output power were 100 ns and 100 times, respectively. The variation of the attenuance of peak maxima At, the time delay of peak maxima t and the variation of full width at half maximum w were strongly dependent on the detection position and the wavelength of the laser beam. At, t and w increased gradually as the sample diameter increased to be much absorbed and vigorously scattered. On the other hand, each optical parameter had a tendency to increase as the sugar content increased. Such behavior was remarkable when the transmitted light was detected at the side face of a sample. When we apply TOF-NIRS to detection of the information for the inside of fruit with high moisture content like Satsuma mandarin, it is very important to give attention to the difference in the scattered light within tissues and the semi-straightly propagated light. Furthermore, we tried to express the resulting phenomena by using a model samples composed of water, sucrose, and milk. The variation of the time resolved profile is strongly governed by the combination of the light absorption component, scattering medium, and refractive index.

  • In this paper, we propose the delay sensitive traffic and a high bandwidth QoS service in order to supply real-time traffic such as VoIP, multimedia service. We use IntServ over DiffServ network to supply end-to-end QoS service in the IETF. We define the proposed QoS services which are Best, Good, Default service. We analyze the performance using NS simulator with end to end QoS service in IntServ over DiffServ network. The proposed billing system uses the Accounting, Authentication, Authorization (AAA) functions of RADIUS protocol and proposes the dynamic pricing method according to network usage state using end-to-end QoS of IntServ over DiffServ network. In order to secure billing system, we design and implement audit trail system by the IEEE POSIX.1E standard.

  • The effect of cadmium chloride $(CdCl_2)$ on the expression of E-cadherin was examined in bEnd.3 mouse brain endothelial cells. $CdCl_2$ induced $PGE_2$ release, which were blocked by non-steroidal antinflamatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as indomethacin and NS398 indicating the expression of COX-2 might contribute to $PGE_2$ production. $CdCl_2$ decreased the expression of E-cadherin, but not VE-cadherin at levels of mRNA and protein. Reduced expression level of E-cadherin was restored by NSAIDs, which was reversed by the addition of $PGE_2$. $CdC_2$-induced decrease of E-cadherin level was also recovered by antioxidants including N-acetylcyteine (NAC) and trolox. Together with previous report which showed $CdCl_2$ induced COX-2 expression in a cellular oxidative stress dependent manner, these data suggest that $CdCl_2$ decreases E-cadherin expression through induction of cellular oxidative stress and in turn COX-2 expression in brain endothelial cells.

  • This paper introduced cascading technique as a new technology composed of two pulse transformers and presented the experimental data and results. To obtain the stable pulse voltage adopted cascading technique, we designed and tested a compact pulse generator by adjusting the load resistors and input voltage. Adopting cascading technique to load, we found that average cascading voltage was about 62$\%$ of theoretical value. Cascading ratio was calculated at almost 19 compared with non cascading voltage.

  • Gravitational wave (GW) is a probe to observe compact objects (WD, NS, and BHs) in the Universe. Compact binary coalescences (CBCs) were expected to be primary sources of LIGO, VIRGO, and KAGRA. Indeed GW150914 from BH-BH binary coalescence at 430 Mpc was discovered by LIGO between 25-350 Hz. The total system mass of GW150914 is ${\sim}70M_{\odot}$, and about $3M_{\odot}$ of energy is converted to GWs in 0.2s of the observation duration. In lower frequencies below 10 Hz, in addition to CBCs with $1-100M_{\odot}$, more massive sources of ${\sim}1,000-10,000M_{\odot}$ are observable for seconds up to days in time scale. We introduce GW astrophysics and present highlights of target sources for the proposed super conducting low-frequency gravitational-wave telescope (SLGT).

  • Objectives : This study aims to identify temperament and characteristics of cannabis and methamphetamine abusers for elucidating psycho-biological variables related to certain substance abuse. Methods : A total of 320 patients who registered in the 'Hepatitis C cohorts study of intravenous drug users' between March 2006 and March 2010 participated in this study. Data on demographic variables were obtained and the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) and measures for nicotine dependence, alcohol dependence, depression and anxiety were assessed. After comparing TCI between cannabis, methamphetamine, and co-abusers, correlations between TCI and other clinical variables were examined. Results : The methamphetamine abuser group showed significantly higher scores in Novelty Seeking (NS2) and Harm Avoidance (HA3) in temperament than the cannabis abuser and co-abuser groups, whereas the cannabis abuser group had higher scores in purposefulness (SD2), congruent second nature (SD5), and self-directedness (SD) in character than the methamphetamine abuser group. In addition, temperaments and characters correlated with various psychiatric symptoms. Conclusions : We found the differences in temperament and characters among cannabis abusers, methamphetamine abusers. These findings might contribute to further understanding of mechanisms of cannabis and methamphetamine abuse.

  • Gallotannin (GT) is derived from plant poly phenol and is associated with biological actions in a wide range of cells. In this study, we evaluated the effect of GTon apoptosis and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression and attempted to shed light on the mechanism of action in A549 human lung carcinoma cells. We found that GT dramatically induced apoptosis as demonstrated by expression of p53 and active caspase-3 via western blot analysis and fragmented DNA as detected by DNA fragmentation and DAPI staining. We also observed that GT significantly causes COX-2 expression in a dose-dependent manner determined by western blot analysis. Phosphorylation of Akt and p38 was considerably increased by GT in A549 human lung carcinoma cells. Inhibition of Akt and p38kinase with LY294002 or SB203580 suppressed GT-induced apoptosis and COX-2 expression. Furthermore, we have shown that prevention of COX-2 with NS398 or indomethacin does not any effects on apoptosis induced by GT. Taken together, our present results suggest that GT regulates apoptosis and COX-2 expression through Akt and p38kinase pathway in A549, human lung carcinoma cells.
