  • Particle filtering (PF) has shown its outperforming results compared to that of classical Kalman filtering (KF), particularly for highly nonlinear problems. However, PF may not be universally superior to the extended KF (EKF) although the case (i.e. an example that the EKF outperforms PF) is seldom reported in the literature. Particularly, PF approaches show degraded performance for problems where the state noise is very small or zero. This is because particles become identical within a few iterations, which is so called particle impoverishment (PI) phenomenon; consequently, no matter how many particles are employed, we do not have particle diversity regardless of if the impoverished particle is close to the true state value or not. In this paper, we investigate this PI phenomenon, and show an example problem where a classical KF approach outperforms PF approaches in terms of mean squared error (MSE) criterion. Furthermore, we compare the processing speed of the EKF and PF approaches, and show the better speed performance of classical EKF approaches. Therefore, PF approaches may not be always better option than the classical EKF for nonlinear problems. Specifically, we show the outperforming result of unscented Kalman filter compared to that of PF approaches (which are shown in Fig. 7(c) for processing speed performance, and Fig. 6 for MSE performance in the paper).

  • This paper aims to study the large deflections of variable-arc-length elastica subjected to the terminal forces (e.g., axial force and torque). Based on Kirchhoff's rod theory and with help of Euler parameters, the set of nonlinear governing differential equations which free from the effect of singularity are established together with boundary conditions. The system of nonlinear differential equations is solved by using the shooting method with high accuracy integrator, seventh-eighth order Runge-Kutta with adaptive step-size scheme. The error norm of end conditions is minimized within the prescribed tolerance ($10^{-5}$). The behavior of VAL elastica is studied by two processes. One is obtained by applying slackening first. After that keeping the slackening as a constant and then the twist angle is varied in subsequent order. The other process is performed by reversing the sequence of loading in the first process. The results are interpreted by observing the load-deflection diagram and the stability properties are predicted via fold rule. From the results, there are many interesting aspects such as snap-through phenomenon, secondary bifurcation point, loop formation, equilibrium configurations and effect of variable-arc-length to behavior of elastica.

  • The cable structure is a kind of ductile structural system using the tension cable and compression column as a main element. From mechanical characteristics of the structural material, it is profitable to be subjected to the axial forces than bending moment or shear forces. And we haweto consider the local buckling when it is subjected to compression forces, but tension member can be used until the failure strength. So we can say that the tension member is the most excellent structural member. Cable dome structures are made up of only the tension cable and compression column considering these mechanical efficiency and a kind of structural system. In this system, the compression members are connected by using tension members, not connected directly each other. Also, this system is lightweight and easy to construct. But, the cable dome structural system has a danger of global buckling as external load increases. That is, as the axisymmetric structure is subjected to the axisymmetric load, the unsymmetric deformation mode is happened at some critical point and the capacity of the structure is rapidly lowered by this reason. This phenomenon Is the bifurcation and we have to reflect this in the design process of the large space structures. In this study, We investigated the nonlinear unstable phenomenon of the Geiger, Zetlin and Flower-type cable dome.

  • During the previous few years, phenomenon of bioconvection along with the use of nanoparticles showed large number of applications in technological and industrial field. This paper analyzed the bioconvection phenomenon in magnetohydrodynamic boundary layer flow of a Powell-Eyring nanoliquid past a stretchable cylinder with Cattaneo-Christov heat flux. In addition, the impacts of chemical reaction and heat generation/absorption parameter are considered. By the use of appropriate transformation, the governing PDEs (nonlinear) have been transformed and formulated into nonlinear ODEs. The resulting nonlinear ODEs subjected to relevant boundary conditions are solved analytically through homotopy analysis method which is programmed in Mathematica software. Graphical and numerical results versus physical quantities like velocity, temperature, concentration and motile microorganism are investigated under the impact of physical parameters. It is noted that velocity profile enhances as the curvature parameter A and Eyring-Powell fluid parameter M increases but a decline manner for large values of buoyancy ratio parameter Nr and bio-convection Rayleigh number Rb. In the presence of Prandtl number Pr, Eyring-Powell fluid parameter M and heat absorption parameter , temperature profile decreases. Nano particle concentration profile increases for increasing values of magnetic parameter Ha and thermophoresis parameter Nt. The motile density profile has revealed a decrement pattern for higher values of bio-convection Lewis number Lb and bio-convection peclet number Pe. This study may find uses in bio-nano coolant systems, advance nanomechanical bio-convection energy conversion equipment's, etc.

  • In general mechanical servo systems, friction deteriorates the performance of controllers by its nonlinear characteristics. Especially, friction phenomenon causes steady-state tracking errors and limit cycles in position and velocity control systems, even though gains of controllers are tuned well in linear system model. Even if sensor is used higher accuracy level, it is difficult to improve tracking performance of the position to the same level with a general control method such as PID type. Therefore, many friction models were proposed and compensation methods have been researched actively. In this paper, we consider that the variation of mover's mass is various by loading and unloading. The normal force variation occurs by it and other parameters. Therefore, the proposed control system is composed of main position controller and a friction compensator. A parameter estimator for a nonlinear friction model is designed by adaptive control law and adaptive backstopping control method.

  • Nonlinear internal waves (NLIWs) are usually generated by nonlinear process on linear internal waves (IW). Near HengChun Ridge that links Taiwan and Luzon Islands, we found that there are linear internal waves following NLIW and they travel westward at different speed, about 1.5 m/s for IW and 2.9 m/s for NLIW. This phenomenon was observed on site with ship radar and echo sounders, and later verified with thermistor chain. West of Luzon Strait, the separation of NLIW are 5 km or more, while linear internal waves are lines of wave crests at nearly equal distance that is only a few hundred meters apart. The current hypothesis is that most of the energy of internal tide forms a beam that propagates upward from the eastern shoulder of ocean ridge and later interacts with sea surface and thermocline. The interaction with thermocline generates linear internal wave that propagate along the pycnocline at about 1.5 m/s. The interaction with sea surface scatters internal wave energy downward, ensonifies the water column and generates large nonlinear waves that propagate westward at 2.9 m/s as mode 1 in a waveguide.

  • This paper proposes a simpler solution to the stabilization problem of a special class of nonlinear underactuated mechanical systems which includes widely studied benchmark systems like Inertia Wheel Pendulum, TORA and Acrobot. Complex internal dynamics and lack of exact feedback linearizibility of these systems makes design of control law a challenging task. Stabilization of these systems has been achieved using Energy Shaping and damping injection and Backstepping technique. Former results in hybrid or switching architectures that make stability analysis complicated whereas use of backstepping some times requires closed form explicit solutions of highly nonlinear equations resulting from partial feedback linearization. It also exhibits the phenomenon of explosions of terms resulting in a highly complicated control law. Exploiting recently introduced Dynamic Surface Control technique and using control Lyapunov function method, a novel nonlinear controller design is presented as a solution to these problems. The stability of the closed loop system is analyzed by exploiting its two-time scale nature and applying concepts from Singular Perturbation Theory. The design procedure is shown to be simpler and more intuitive than existing designs. Design has been applied to important benchmark systems belonging to the class demonstrating controller design simplicity. Advantages over conventional Energy Shaping and Backstepping controllers are analyzed theoretically and performance is verified using numerical simulations.

  • The seismic analysis of structures without applying the effects of soil can undermine functional objectives of structure so that it can affect all the desired purposes at the design and control stages of the structure. In this research, employing OpenSees and MATLAB software simultaneously and developing a definite three-dimensional finite element model of a high-rise concrete structure, designed using performance-based plastic design approach, the performance of Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) and Active Mass Damper (AMD) is both examined and compared. Moreover some less noted aspects such as nonlinear interaction of soil and structure, uplift, nonlinear behavior of structure and structural torsion have received more attention. For this purpose, the analysis of time history on the structural model has been performed under 22 far-field accelerogram records. Examining a full range of all structural seismic responses, including lateral displacement, acceleration, inter-story drift, lost plastic energy, number of plastic hinges, story shear force and uplift. The results indicate that TMD performs better than AMD except for lateral displacement and inter-story drift to control other structural responses. Because on the one hand, nonlinear structural parameters and soil-structure interaction have been added and on the other hand, the restriction on the control force applied that leads up to saturation phenomenon in the active control system affect the performance of AMD. Moreover, the control force applied by structural control system has created undesirable acceleration and shear force in the structure.

  • The nonlinear snap-through buckling of functionally graded (FG) carbon nanotube reinforced composite (CNTRC) curved tubes is analytically investigated in this research. It is assumed that the FG-CNTRC curved tube is supported on a three-parameter nonlinear elastic foundation and is subjected to the uniformly distributed pressure and thermal loads. Properties of the curved nanocomposite tube are distributed across the radius of the pipe and are given by means of a refined rule of mixtures approach. It is also assumed that all thermomechanical properties of the nanocomposite tube are temperature-dependent. The governing equations of the curved tube are obtained using a higher-order shear deformation theory, where the traction free boundary conditions are satisfied on the top and bottom surfaces of the tube. The von Kármán type of geometrical non-linearity is included into the formulation to consider the large deflection in the curved tube. Equations of motion are solved using the two-step perturbation technique for nanocomposite curved tubes which are simply-supported and clamped. Closed-form expressions are provided to estimate the snap-buckling resistance of FG-CNTRC curved pipes rested on nonlinear elastic foundation in thermal environment. Numerical results are given to explore the effects of the distribution pattern and volume fraction of CNTs, thermal field, foundation stiffnesses, and geometrical parameters on the instability of the curved nanocomposite tube.
