  • In 2019, Disney's musical film "Aladdin" was newly introduced with Princess Jasmine's theme song "Speechless," which was not featured in the animation "Aladdin" in 1992. Written as a theme song, "Speechless" expresses Princess Jasmine as a self-reliant, enterprising and dignified woman. The song made the change in Princess Jasmine's character very articulate. She has developed herself as an active and enthusiastic character from a rather passive and reserved figure. The musical film "Aladdin" has drawn much attention and love from many audiences with its own narrative and original songs, but the addition of a new theme song "Speechless", which was not in the animation in 1992, made the musical film "Aladdin" even more powerful and meaningful. The study examined the organic relationship between the musical features and narratives of the newly included theme song 'Speechless' in the musical film Aladdin. Through the analysis of the six scenes that include the musical features of the theme song "Speechless," the study looked at how the relationship between music and narratives had an influence on cinematic expression.

  • This study aims to propose and apply a song analysis method for musical songs and acting. Prior to rehearsing a musical on stage, students and actors practice diverse exercises ranging from singing, acting and dancing. Among them, singing a musical song requires the actor not only to learn the pitch, beat and melody of the music but also to express the story and scene of the character in combination. Previous studies on analysis focused on research from the perspective of individual elements of singing, acting, and dancing rather than the proposal of comprehensive analysis methods. It is time for comprehensive analysis methods to be developed to practice musical songs and demonstrate them on stage. This study selected "Epiphany" sung by Todd from the musical Sweeney Todd(1979) as the subject of analysis. The song was analyzed in five stages: synopsis, music analysis, lyrics analysis, Uta Hagen's The Six Steps analysis, and Michael Chekhov's Psychological Gesture analysis. Through proposing and applying this step-by-step analysis method, this study verifies the usefulness of musical song analysis for practising both musical theory and practical skills at the same time and provides a base for future studies.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze musical songs from an academic perspective by applying vocal techniques that can express songs in depth in three dimensions. Singing a musical song cannot be completed with just the musical part, rather, it should be accompanied by the analysis of various aspects such as the emotional state of the scenes and the characters. To this end, this study performed a multi-dimensional analysis of fields such as theatrical structure, lyrics, musical structure, and dynamics. In addition, the study explored and applied Estill Voice Training(EVT) that actors can best express songs with the emotions of the theater and music. EVT categorizes voice into six tones: speech, sob/cry, falsetto, twang, opera, and belting. In this study, in addition to these six sounds, the positions of vocal cords and larynx were also applied to seek ways to effectively express songs using "Gar Nichts" from the musical "Elisabeth" as a case study. "Gar Nichts" is a song sung by the protagonist Elisabeth, which expresses the self and the conflict at the peak of pain. Musically, this song requires various sound and voice-changing techniques to cover the range of "G#3-Gb5." As a result, it was confirmed that in order to embody the emotions of the characters and the songs in depth, the analysis of scenes and characters as well as various singing techniques need to be applied in harmony.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the characteristics of contemporary vocalization and songs in order to learn various vocal methods in musical vocal classes and apply them to students. Musical vocalization methods change and evolve according to the demands of the times. Today, the characteristics of contemporary musicals cannot be limited to anyone genre, and the genre of music as well as the style of work are derived from several genres and coexist. 'The Girl in 14G,' the subject of this study, is a song that appeared in the album of Kristin Chenoweth, a famous American musical actress who uses various vocal techniques. Jeanine Tesori composed this song with various vocal techniques such as Classical, Jazz, Belting, and Mixed Voice to express New York's representative music genres of Broadway Musical, Metropolitan Opera and East Village Jazz. The development of the song consists of a difficult process in which one actor has to act across three different characters in three musical styles and singing methods. Singing 'The Girl in 14G' requires a lot of effort and practice as it is necessary to acquire various vocal techniques, which makes it a good text for students and actors in the educational perspective. As a result, this study confirmed that this song is a representative piece with a solid musical and dramatic composition and is a good example that shows the convergence characteristics of contemporary musical vocal techniques.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the transformation and characteristics of the Verse-Chorus form. The musical form of a musical song is a structural mechanism for expression to effectively convey the dramatic situation of the characters to the audience. This study identified four types of representative forms that can be used to explore the transformation with the verse-chorus form and examined their characteristics. First is the Verse-Chorus form which repeats the description of simple situations and characters in the early stage of the musical. Second is the Verse-Bridge-Verse form which is used to evoke the atmosphere and escape boredom through a slight transformation of the bridge while explaining a simple character. Third is the Verse-Prechorus-Chorus form, which sits just before the chorus, connects the verse and the chorus, and promotes the emotional rise of the characters by smoothing the drama and the harmonic progression. Lastly, this study examined the expanded Verse-BG dialogue-Chorus form used to represent the situation in which conflicts about the complex feelings of the characters and the decisions about them coexist. As such, musical songs use various types of verse-chorus forms. Through the formality and transformation of the verse-chorus, the logic of the music and the logic of the drama are balanced so that the development of the music and the drama does not enter the state of imbalance. Based on this study, further progressive research can take place on the correlation between musical form and dramatic structure, beyond the transformation of musical song form.

  • In some previous works on musical genre classification, human experts specify segments of a song for extracting musical features. Although this approach might contribute to performance enhancement, it requires manual intervention and thus can not be easily applied to new incoming songs. To extract musical features without the manual intervention, most of recent researches on music genre classification extract features from a pre-determined part of a song (for example, 30 seconds after initial 30 seconds), which may cause loss of accuracy. In this paper, in order to alleviate the accuracy problem, we propose a new method, which extracts features from representative segments (or main theme part) identified by structure analysis of music piece. The proposed method detects segments with repeated melody in a song and selects representative ones among them by considering their positions and energies. Experimental results show that the proposed method significantly improve the accuracy compared to the approach using a pre-determined part.

  • The purpose of this acoustic experimental study was to investigate interrelation between prosodic features of Korean spoken language and those of Korean folk songs. The words of Changbutaryoung were spoken for analysis of spoken language by three female graduate students and the song was sung for musical features by three Kyunggi Minyo singers. Pitch contours were analyzed from sound spectrogram made by Pitch Works. Results showed that special musical voices (breaking, tinkling, vibrating, etc.) and tunes (rising, falling, level, etc) of folk song were discovered at the same place where accents of spoken language came. It appeared that, even though the patterns of pitch contour were different from each other, there was positive interrelation between prosodic features of Korean spoken language and those of Korean folk songs.

In addition, five musicals and five songs that can represent the musical genres were selected as secondary categories. This study then divided the singing styles into Legit from , Pop from , Rock from , Jazz/Blues from , and Hip Hop/Rap from and suggested vocal scales. The analysis of this study demonstrated how various music was used as a material for musicals responding to the needs of the times in musical history and how important it is to develop various singing styles. While this study selected five representative genres and musicals to limit the scope of analysis, it intends to expand the scope through follow-up research. Based on this, it is anticipated that various further research will be conducted to study the diversity of musical vocal education and vocal techniques.
