  • This paper is concerned with the robustness evaluations of the guidance controller for a bimodal tram which is being developed by the Korea Railroad Research Institute (KRRI). The bimodal tram is an all-wheel steered multiple-articulated vehicle as a new kind of transportation vehicle. This vehicle has to be equipped with an automatic guidance system. In [1], such a controller has been recently proposed. However, since the performance is affected by weight change of the vehicle due to number of the passenger, model parameter uncertainties depending on the state of friction and the elasticity of the tire, and a typhoon, the controller designed must be examined with these conditions. As expected, because the vehicle dynamics is highly nonlinear, for the sake of investigating the robustness of the controller we compose two simulation ways based on the vehicle models which are implemented by the ADAMS and the MATLAB/LabVIEW toolboxes. Different uncertainties and a typhoon disturbance have been considered for the simulation conditions. Simulation results are shown.

  • The three-phase four-leg voltage-source inverter topology is an interesting option for the three-phase four-wire system. With an additional leg, this topology can achieve superior performance under unbalanced and nonlinear load conditions. However, because of the low bandwidth of conventional controllers in high-power inverter applications, the system cannot guarantee a balanced output voltage under the unbalanced load condition. Most of the methods proposed to solve this problem mainly use the multiple synchronous frame method, which requires several controllers and a large amount of computation because of frame transformation. This study proposes a simple hybrid controller that combines proportional-integral (PI) and resonant controllers in the synchronous frame synchronized with the positive-sequence component of the output voltage of the three-phase four-leg inverter. The design procedure for the controller and the theoretical analysis are presented. The performance of the proposed method is verified by the experimental results and compared with that of the conventional PI controller.

  • This paper presents a hybrid (i.e., integrated passive-active) system for seismic response control of a cable-stayed bridge. Because multiple control devices are operating, a hybrid control system could alleviate some of the restrictions and limitations that exist when each system is acting alone. Lead rubber bearings are used as passive control devices to reduce the earthquake-induced forces in the bridge and hydraulic actuators are used as active control devices to further reduce the bridge responses, especially deck displacements. In the proposed hybrid control system, a linear quadratic Gaussian control algorithm is adopted as a primary controller. In addition, a secondary bang-bang type (i.e., on-off type) controller according to the responses of lead rubber bearings is considered to increase the controller robustness. Numerical simulation results show that control performances of the hybrid control system are superior to those of the passive control system and slightly better than those of the fully active control system. Furthermore, it is verified that the hybrid control system with a bang-bang type controller is more robust for stiffness perturbation than the active controller with μ-synthesis method and there are no signs of instability in the overall system whereas the active control system with linear quadratic Gaussian algorithm shows instabilities in the perturbed system. Therefore, the proposed hybrid protective system could effectively be used to seismically excited cable-stayed bridges.

  • In this paper, a fuzzy compensated PID control system is proposed for formation control of mobile robots. The control system consists of a kinematic controller based on the leader-follower approach and a dynamic controller to handle dynamics effects of mobile robots. To maintain the desired formation of mobile robots, the dynamic controller is equipped with a PID controller; however, the PID controller has poor performance in nonlinear and changing environments. In order to improve these problem, we applied the additional fuzzy compensator. Finally, the proposed control system has been evaluated through computer simulation to demonstrate the improved results.

  • This paper presents a dynamical anti-reset windup (ARW) compensation method for saturating control systems with multiple controllers and/or multiloop configuration. By regarding the difference of the controller states in the absence and presence of saturating actuators as an objective function, the dynamical compensator which minimize the objective function are derived in an integrated fashion. The proposed dynamical compensator is a closed form of the plant and controller parameters. The proposed method guarantees total stability of resulting system. An illustrative example is given to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • In this paper self tuning control of interconnected systems are dealt in view point of large scale system control. The plant model is given in multiple ARMA process. This process is simplified as independent SISO ARMA process having offset terms. This offset was considered as effects of interconnections. In each decentralized system, self tuning controller with instrumental variable method is adopted. As a result, this algorithm enables the parameter estimation to be unbiased and non-drift. This controller contains a new implicit offset rejection technique. Simulation results considers well with the analysis in case of linear interconnection.

  • This paper presents a Matlab toolbox for proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller design. By means of the tool, the complete set of controllers simultaneously satisfying multiple design specifications such as stability and robust stability margins can be obtained directly from the only frequency response data on the plant.

  • Instead of Cartesian product in combining multiple input variables for fuzzy logic controllers, a fuzzy controller using fuzzy relations in inference procedure is proposed. Moreover, a technique is proposed by which conventional fuzzy control rules are transformed into the forms including fuzzy relations. It will be shown through several examples that the proposed technique gives smoother interpolation than conventional ones.

  • This study deals with the heading angle and depth keeping control technique for an ROV with multiple horizontal and vertical thrusters by thrust allocation. The light work class ROV URI-L, which is under development at KRISO, is a redundant actuating system with multiple thrusters that are larger than the ROV's degree of freedom. In the redundant actuating system, there are several solutions for a specific ROV motion to be performed. Therefore, a thrust allocation algorithm that considers the entire propulsion system should be regarded as important. First, this paper describes the propulsion system of the ROV and introduces the thrust allocation method of each motion controller. In addition, the performance of the controller is examined using a heading angle and depth keeping control test in a stationary state.

  • Many physical systems can be modeled by incorporating continuous and discrete event nature together. Such hybrid systems contain both continuous and discrete states that influence the dynamic be-havior of the systems. There has been an increasing interest in thers types of systems during the last dec-ade, mostly due to the growing usage of computers in the control of physical plants but also as a result of the hybrid nature of physical processes. The stability theory for hybrid systems is considered as extension of Lyapunov theory where the existence of an abstract energy function satisfying certain properties verifies stability, called multiple Lyapunov theory. In this paper, a hybrid stabilizing controller is proposed using the control Lyapunov function method and multiple Lyapunov theory, and the proposed method is applied to lon-gitudinal spacing control in a vehicle platoon for intelligent transportation systems(ITS).
