  • The Korean government is considering the implementation of a project to develop a deep-sea human-operated vehicle (HOV) to improve the level of deep-sea research. Information on the scientific benefits from the project is urgently needed in order to come to a decision about whether to implement the project. This paper measures the conservation value of developing nine attributes associated with HOV by using the choice experiment (CE). A survey of about 356 experts was undertaken and 132 experts completely responded to the survey. To deal with the CE data from the survey, we employed a multinomial logit model. All the coefficient estimates are statistically significant and consistent with prior expectations. Therefore, we can judge that the respondents' works required in the CE survey were within their cognitive abilities and they reported responsible and significant values. Each marginal willingness to pay for each attribute associated with the HOV is statistically significant and provides good information on the scientific values with regard to developing the HOV. The results can be utilized in evaluating and planning several alternatives related to developing the HOV.

  • The study developed physical distribution channel choice models reflecting decision making of the firms and studied how choice decision factors influence selection of distribution channel. The distribution channel survey data in Korea was used to do empirical study. As a choice set, distribution channels were classified into two main choice channels: direct and indirect channels. In addition, indirect channels were classified into other three channels according to the type of intermediate point: distribution center, wholesale store, and agency. This study developed choice models by applying both binary and multinomial logit model with various set of factors. The results showed that the developed logit models seemingly reflect distribution channel choice behaviors. The hypothesis tests on how each factor influences choice of distribution channel were performed and discussed as well.

  • This study applied the choice experiment (CE) method to measure values of statistical lives from multi-attributed mortality risk reduction choices. The four characteristics of mortality risk (i.e. cause of death, voluntariness of mortality risk, timing of death, magnitude of mortality risk reduction) are utilized to design the alternatives of choice sets. The estimation results for the multinomial logit model show that individuals are willing to pay 27,930 won per year for a change from the status quo to a $\frac{1}{100}$ mortality risk reduction for 10 years, 116,773 won per year for mortality risk reduction associated with adults, 97,682 won per year for voluntary mortality risk reduction, 77,234 won per year for involuntary mortality risk reduction. There were several estimates of VSL related to different attributes of mortality risk. The mean VSLs of infant/child/young adult ranged from 1,165 million won to 1,367 million won. The mean VSLs ranged from 1,631 million won to 1,833 million won for adult, and were between 1,128 million won and 1,330 million won for old person.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the choice behavior of the mode of transportation for travel from Korea to China. Discrete choice analysis is utilized to establish the factors that affect travelers' choice and to quantify the importance of these factors in transportation mode choices. The proposed choice models were constructed by using stated-preference (SP) data obtained from Chungcheongnam-do. This study also examined different choice behavior in order to capture any previously unobserved differences in the residence area. Results showed that the access time and frequency attributes are the most significant factors, while the travel time attributes are the least significant factors for travelers' choice behaviour. The insights of the results described in this research provide some practical suggestions to transportation providers for planning and strategic management endeavors in the future.

  • The purpose of this research study was to identify the factors that influence comsumer who make decisions on preferred coffee types. Data was collected for a month from September $12^{th}$ to October $10^{th}$, 2010 from 807 participants who visited a cafe' in Seoul. The Limdep(LIMited DEPendent) 8.0 program was used in analyzing the determinants for preferred types of coffee using the multinomial logit model(MNL) approach. The results revealed that there were four taste preference groups being Espresso, Americano, Cafe' Late, and Cafe' Mocha ; as well as confirming that demographic characteristics influenced the coffee selection attributes, type of packaging, preferred coffee brand, and visit frequencies. This study found seven coffee selection attributes were significant factors in influencing patrons choices for purchasing speciality coffee being age range, profession, packing status, elation, superficial appearance, weight control, and habitual, respectively. The research reflects the coffee selection attributes by the customers' preference and concludes that it would be helpful to make marketing strategy for particular coffee brands.

  • This study empirically analyzes the policy demand for population inflow in Hongcheon-gun, a region that has experienced population decline over the past decade. The results of this study based on the multinominal logit model provide the policy implications as follows. First, due to the differing factors influencing the demand for population inflow policies among the young and the elderly, local governments should clearly define the policy targets for population inflow. Second, in the context of policy demand for population inflow through corporate attraction, we identify statistically significant and positive effects of the length of residence for both young and old people, and the level of formal education for the elderly. These results emphasize the importance of formulating population inflow policies distinctively targeted for the young and the elderly generations, respectively, thereby increasing population inflow in the population reduction area.

  • To predict the future distribution of forest vegetation, the present forest stand distributions of South Korea were represented by multinomial logit model with the following environmental variables: summer average precipitation, the coldest month average temperature, elevation, degree of base saturation, and soil organic matter. The future forest community was predicted by applying the MIROC3.2 hires A1B scenario. The future climate data were downscaled by statistically method. The coldest month average temperature increased $4.4^{\circ}C$, $6.0^{\circ}C$, and $9.4^{\circ}C$, and 3 months average precipitation changed -1.2%, 5.7%, and 5.3% for 2020s, 2050s, and 2080s respectively. For the projected summer precipitation and the coldest temperature, the future deciduous and mixed forests in the study area increased 56.9% and 8.3% and the coniferous forest decreased 11.2% in 2080s based on present.

  • There has been a lively debate between self-employed and wage workers on the speed of minimum wage hikes. Minimum wage is a redistributive policy that evokes confrontation and conflict whereby individuals' views on the policy coincide with their material self-interest. With this in mind, the researcher analyzed whether an individual's labor market status was explanatory to his/her view on the speed of minimum wage hike. Moreover, in light of the likelihood that the varying degree to which self-employed can afford minimum wage hike affects their differential preferences for the policy, the researcher attempted to identify whether there was a moderation effect of income class on the relationship. In the actual analysis, the researcher investigated employment policy survey dataset using a multinomial logit model. The results suggest that, among self-employed, 'gradual increase' and 'rapid increase' of minimum wages are less preferred $vis-{\grave{a}}-vis$ 'minimal increase,' which is the reference. As to the moderation effect, when a self-employed has a middle-income class status, his/her negative preference for the policy is likely to be attenuated. One implication of this study is that subsidizing self-employed small business owners, who are most dissatisfied with the current speed at which minimum wages rise, would be an effective prescription on reducing social conflicts.

  • This study analyzes housing choice determinants of the youth and newlyweds households by using housing survey data in Incheon. A multinomial logit model is employed for analysis with the following variables: housing characteristics, housing market characteristics, and residential and neighborhood environment characteristics. The findings from the analysis are as follows. First, for the continued residence of the youth, the important factors were the relief assistance of housing maintenance costs. For the newlyweds, the important factors were the quality improvement of residential environments to ensure residential stability. Second, the housing choice factors to attract the youth were residential support for rent, maintenance costs, and relocation, and the improvements of residential environments such as security, noise levels, and medical facilities. For the newlyweds, the important factors were housing loan assistance for a home purchase or a cheonsei deposit and residential quality improvements for air pollution and parking facilities. Third, the youth were likely to move out due to high rental costs, and the newlyweds were likely to move out for the purchase of a new apartment or higher-quality housing.

  • Intellectual Property(IP) investment and its management are an key driver to create corporate value and intangible asset value through corporate's competitiveness. The purposes of this study are to survey capability of IP management and assess the effects of IP investment and its management on the separation into groups of intangible asset value. In order to attain those purposes of this study, sample companies were taken and categorized into three groups by the level of intangible asset value ratio, and data for IP investment such as R&D expenditure and advertising expenditure were collected from 90 manufacturing companies, and data for IP management capability about patent, design and brand were taken through survey. The final results showed as followed: First, IP management capability were generally not sufficient in the results of survey. Second, mean vector for the four variables were significantly different among three groups in multivariate analysis variance. Third, the order of their contribution to separating the groups were R&D expenditure, advertising expenditure, patent management, management of design and brand in canonical variate analysis. Fourth, R&D and patent management capability were significantly related to the separation of three groups, while advertising expenditure were not significant and management of design and brand were not sure of Significance in multinomial logit discriminant analysis. Fifth, exploratory power of the discriminant model were estimated by 53% in classification analysis. Finally, strategic policy for IP investment and its management should be taken urgently to create intangible asset value and to improve the capability of its management.
