The Mediating Effect of Depression in the Impact of Cultural Adaptation Stress on School Life Adaptation of Multicultural Adolescents: Searching for Converged Intervention Strategies (다문화가정 청소년의 문화적응 스트레스가 학교생활적응에 미치는 영향에서 우울의 매개효과: 융합적 대응방안 모색)

  • The current study examined whether multicultural students' depression level mediated between cultural adaptation stress and school life adaptation in South Korea. A total of 1,329 students in the sixth year (2016) of the National Youth Policy Institute (NYPI) 's multicultural youth panel data were analyzed using regression analysis. The main results of the study are as follows. First, cultural adaptation stress of adolescents in multicultural families had a direct influence on school life adaptation. Second, depression partly mediated between cultural adaptation stress and school life adaptation. These findings have major implications for policies and interventions in regard to cultural adaptation stress and school life adaptation of the youth in multicultrual families.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine whether multicultural youth's participation in activities affects academic performance, verify whether achievement motivation and social relations have multiple mediating effects, and analyze whether there are differences between male and female groups. To this end, a total of 1,635 high school sophomores were analyzed in the 8th year (2018) of the Multicultural Youth Panel Survey. As a result of the analysis, first, it was confirmed that the influence of multicultural youth's participation in youth activities on academic performance was partially mediated by achievement motivation and social relations. Second, for all multicultural adolescents, 'achievement motivation' was found to have a significant effect on academic performance, and this route was found to be male students is a female student. It was found to be more positive than 001), and the difference between groups was statistically significant. Therefore, it is necessary to expand opportunities to participate in youth activities for multicultural youth and to prepare creative activity spaces and content support policies.

The Structural Relationship between Parental Career and Care Support for Multicultural Youth and Teacher Relations, Career Preparation and Career Determination

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the influence of career support and teacher relations of parents in order to determine the career determination of multicultural youths, and to confirm the influence of career preparation between parental career and care support and teacher relations. To this end, data from 2017 (the 7th year) was used among the data from the Multicultural Youth Panel Survey (MAPS). According to the analysis results, first, career support, teacher relations, and career preparation of multicultural youth parents have a positive impact on career determination. Second, the importance of the relative influence of career preparation, which is an internal context factor, was also confirmed in the process of determining the career path of multicultural youths. Third, it was analyzed that the higher the career and childcare support of multicultural youth parents, the more positive the teacher relationship, the higher the career determination. Career preparation was confirmed to play a role in mediating career support and teacher relations among multicultural youth parents in determining career paths. Based on the results of this analysis, practical alternatives were proposed to enhance the career determination of multicultural youths.

  • This study analyzed the mediating effects of self-esteem and peer relationship in the effects between physical satisfaction and academic adaptation of multicultural youth. The subjects of the study were 1,064 first-year high school students at the time of the survey using the 8th Multicultural Youth Panel (MAPS) data. For data analysis, descriptive statistics, correlations, and path analysis of measurement variables were carried out using SPSS 25.0. According to the analysis, first, multicultural youth's body satisfaction has a positive effect on academic adaptation, and second, self-esteem is completely mediated in the relationship between body satisfaction and academic adaptation. Third, the relationship between multicultural youth's body satisfaction and academic adaptation has been partially mediated. The results will be used to develop basic data and programs to support healthy growth of multicultural youth. These results can be used to develop basic data and programs to devise support measures for healthy growth of multicultural youth.

  • The purpose of this study was to confirm the determination of the career attitude of multicultural youth, which will be the growth engine of Korean society in the future, and to determine the effect of parental support for multicultural youth on career attitude determination. Multicultural adolescents experience more difficulties in parental support and career attitude determination than ordinary adolescents due to confusion over biculturalism exposed at birth. Therefore, this study confirmed the effect of parental support of multicultural adolescents on career attitude determination and verified the effect of bicultural acceptance attitude. To this end, data from the 8th year of the Multicultural Youth Panel (MAPS) conducted by the Korea Youth Policy Institute were used, and a total of 1,229 multicultural teenagers in the 2nd year of high school participated in the study. For data analysis, frequency analysis, descriptive statistical analysis, correlation analysis, path model suitability verification, path model coefficient, and mediating effect verification were conducted. Based on the results of these studies, it was intended to provide basic data for developing an integrated program that improves parental support and career attitude determination of multicultural adolescents.

A Study on the Mental Health and Parental Efficacy of Mothers of Multicultural Adolescents: Focusing on Latent Profile Analysis

  • The purpose of this study is to classify the potential types of mental health of mothers of multicultural youth by applying Latent Profile Analysis, analyze the influence of predictors, and find out how differences in potential types affect parental efficacy. To this end, panel data for the 9th year (2019) of the Multicultural Youth Panel Survey (MAPS) were used. As a result of the analysis, first, the mental health types of mothers of multicultural adolescents were analyzed in the order of 'middle risk type of mental health'(class3) > 'high risk type of self-esteem'(class1) > 'high risk type of mental health'(class4) > 'cultural adaptation and daily life stress'(class2). Second, compared to the "class 1" group, the lower the family economy level of multicultural youth mothers, the lower the educational background of multicultural youth fathers (husbands) graduate from middle school, the lower the level of Korean, and the lower the level of communication with children, the higher the odds of belonging to the 'mental health medium risk' group (Ods). Third, compared to the 'middle risk type of mental health'(class3) and 'high risk type of mental health'(class4), the 'high risk type of self-esteem'(class1) group was found to have a significant positive (+) effect on parental efficacy.

  • The purpose of this study was to verify the mediating effect of self-esteem in the relationship between family conflict, self-esteem, and life satisfaction perceived by multicultural adolescent. The analysis data used the data of the '2nd MAPS (Multicultural Adolescents Panel Study) 2020' surveyed by the Korea Youth Policy Institute. At the time of the survey, 1,533 multicultural adolescents enrolled in the fifth grade of elementary school were selected as samples. The analysis method was verified for the significance of the indirect effect by technical analysis, correlation analysis, and PROCESS MACRO Model Number 4 with mediating effect and bootstrapping. As a result of the study, first, family conflict perceived by multicultural adolescent negatively affected life satisfaction. Second, self-esteem was partially mediated in the relationship between family conflict and life satisfaction. In other words, it is significant in that it presented policy alternatives and practical programs to improve life satisfaction of multicultural youth.

Family Life Experience and Life Satisfaction of Multicultural Families with School-Aged Children (학령기 자녀를 둔 다문화가정의 가정생활경험과 생활만족도)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the general characteristics and the variety of family life experiences related to the life satisfaction of multicultural families with school-aged children. Data were drawn from the first wave of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey conducted in 2010 and developed by the National Youth Policy Institute. Further, the sample for this study consisted of 95 multicultural families who met the requirements. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, the t -test, analysis of variance, and multiple regression using SPSS ver. 18.0. The main results showed that family life experiences that were made up of 5 domains, specifically time, leisure, household economy, health, and child education had a broad range of levels. In addition, family life experiences differed according to the general characteristics of multicultural families with school-aged children, such as mother's employment status, number of children, father's employment status and education level, and family composition. Lastly, their life satisfaction was significantly predicted by the father's employment status and health, children's age, children's education, and leisure in the order of significance. These findings suggested the need to expand the social intervention range for multicultural families with school-aged children, particularly in terms of family leisure and children's school life adaptation.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze mediating effects of sense of community between Ego-identity and multicultural acceptance. Struatural analysis is performed with six - year panel survey data of elementary school 1st grade students and middle school 1st grade students from Korean child- Youth Panel survey. The subjects of six - year panel survey data are the sixth grade in the elementary school and High school seniors. The results are as follows. First of all, there are differences in Ego-identity, sense of community and multicultural acceptance between the sixth grade in the elementary school and high school seniors. Second, they are related. Third, regression analysis shows that Ego-identity and sense of community have an affect on multicultural acceptance. Fourth, partial mediating effect is suitable for whole youth and sixth grader and complect mediation effect is suitable for high school seniors. In early adolescents, Ego-identity plays a direct role in multicultural acceptance. But in late adolescents, sense of community plays a direct role in multicultural acceptance. Base on these results, for improving adolescents multicultural acceptance, It has suggested educational programs that helps to enhance Ego-identity and sense of community.

Factors Affecting Multicultural Acceptability of Adolescents Using Multilevel Analysis (다수준 분석을 이용한 청소년의 다문화 수용성에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • Objectives : This study aimed to investigate factors affecting multicultural acceptability of adolescents at individual and environmental levels. Methods : Participants were 2,032 first-year high school students who participated in the 4th-year Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey in 2013. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and multilevel analysis. Results : Individual factors affecting multicultural acceptability of adolescents were health status, ego-resilience, and experience of visiting foreign countries. Learning activity, school regulation, relationship with teachers, and community spirit were significant factors at environmental level. Conclusions : Findings suggest that it is necessary to consider health status, improve positive resilience, activate a multicultural experience program, establish friendly relations with teachers, adhere to social norms, and strengthen community spirit for multicultural acceptability.
