  • Because characteristics of diversity, large-scale and unpredictability of disaster are very difficult to make predict of disaster, rapid disaster response activity is important to reduce damage from disaster. Therefore emergency communication technology is essential to information sharing between field personnel in the field. Because the heterogeneous radios defined as some of 100MHz VHF, 400MHz UHF, and 800MHz emergency communication RF band are used in Korea, the field personnels need to have multiple radios. In order to use one radio per personnel, radio voice intercommunication is very necessary. We study on modular 3-Band RF to communicate between heterogeneous radios through single multi-band antenna and verify scalable of the number of equipped radios.

  • In this paper, we investigate throughput performance of OFDMA-based relay systems according to the "sub-cell coverage configuration" of the base station (RS) and the relay station (RS). RS is exploited for improved quality of the received signal with a tradeoff of additional radio resource consumption which may result in degradation of the throughput performance of the system. Therefore, "radio resource reuse" may be necessary for high performance in relay systems. However, it also causes system performance degradation since resource reuse between RSs incurs channel interference. Therefore, effective resource reuse also should be considered for "high throughput coverage configuration" when relays are employed. We relate the resource reuse patterns of neighboring RSs to sub-cell coverage configuration. We determine the sub-cell coverage of the system depending on the ratio of received signal-interference-noise-ratio (SINR) of the mobile station (MS) from the BS and RS, respectively. Simulations illustrate the throughput performance as the function of SINR ratio, and it has different optimal point depending on the resource reuse patterns. Therefore, the "resource reuse pattern" and the "effective sub-cell coverage configuration" should be considered together for the high throughput performance of the relay system.

  • This paper proposes a novel non-coherent TOA estimation scheme using multiple correlation process on the existence of multiple simultaneously operating piconets (SOPs). Impulse radio-ultra wideband (IR-UWB) based on direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) using Gold sequence is employed in order to discriminate each piconet. In order to enhance the characteristic of correlation, this paper presents the method of multiple mask operation (MMO). The time of arrival (TOA) of direct line of sight (DLOS) path is estimated via two step coarse/fine timing detection. To verify the performance of proposed scheme, two distinct channel models approved by IEEE 802.15.4a Task Group (TG) are considered. According to the simulation results, it could conclude that the proposed scheme have performed better performance than the conventional method well even in densed indoor multi-path environment as well as in the existence of multiple SOPs.

  • In this paper, we consider a two way relay network for ship-to-ship communications in a fleet, where two communicating ships exchange the information with the help of a multi-antenna relay ship. For the network, we propose a rate-aware three-phase analog network coding to improve the reliability of the information exchange with asymmetric rates. The proposed scheme allows low-complex implementation of the relay without channel estimation by generating an improved analog network coded signal with the orthogonally received signals from two ships by using only the received signal power at each antenna. In addition, the proposed scheme reduces outages in the data exchange at asymmetric rates by adopting a rate-aware relay power allocation, which is confirmed by evaluating the outage performance via simulation.

  • In this paper, the performances of the presented D2D (device-to-device) systems under the environment of the cognitive convergent overlay networks are evaluated based upon the locations of the D2D users' terminals, the power consumptions of the terminals and the reductions of the interference levels. As the capabilities of the users' terminals improve, the optimization of the system is crucial to the efficient utilization of the radio resources of the individual networks considering their mobility and the features of their networks. Users' mobility model is given for the performance evaluation of the D2D system. In this paper, the performances of the D2D systems are evaluated in terms of the performance index of the FER (frame error rate) employing multiantenna techniques (MIMO:multiple input multiple output) for the various network environments.

  • Using the wireless communication among unacquainted vehicles, an intelligent vehicle safety system can be constructed to exchange vehicle safety-related information, such as urgency stop, traffic accident and road obstacles. In the majority of vehicle safety applications, vehicle safety messages are propagated in the form of broadcast. However, this approach causes some effectiveness and performance problems with massive radio collision, multi-hop propagation. This paper presents a priority based relay node selection method for propagating vehicle safety messages of traffic accident protection system. With this method, vehicle safety messages are relayed by a node that locates in proper distance out of the nodes that are included in the radio transmission range. By decreasing the number of duplicated messages, the packet overhead is lessened while the communication performance is raised. The proposed method was proven to be better than other schemes through network simulations.

  • Simultaneous time monitoring observations of $H_2O$ $6_{16}-5_{23}$, SiO J = 1-0, 2-1, 3-2, and $^{29}SiO$ ${\upsilon}=0$, J = 1-0 lines are carried out in the direction of the Mira variable star TX Cam with the Korean VLBI Network single dish radio telescopes. For the first time, the $H_2O$ maser emission from TX Cam is detected near the stellar velocity at five epochs from April 10, 2013 (${\phi}=3.13$) to June 4, 2014 (${\phi}=3.89$) including minimum optical phases. The intensities of $H_2O$ masers are very weak compared to SiO masers. The variation of peak antenna temperature ratios among SiO ${\upsilon}=1$, J = 1-0, J = 2-1, and J = 3-2 masers is investigated according to their phases. The shift of peak velocities of $H_2O$ and SiO masers with respect to the stellar velocity is also investigated according to observed optical phases. The $H_2O$ maser emission occurs around the stellar velocity during our monitoring interval. On the other hand, the peak velocities of SiO masers show a spread compared to the stellar velocity. The peak velocities of SiO J = 2-1, and J = 3-2 masers show a smaller spread with respect to the stellar velocity than those of SiO J = 1-0 masers. These simultaneous observations of multi-frequencies will provide a good constraint for maser pumping models and a good probe for investigating the stellar atmosphere and envelope according to their different excitation conditions.

  • 3C 84 (NGC 1275) is one of the most famous radio galaxies and a lot of VLBI observations have been conducted to date because of its brightness and proximity (z = 0.0176; 1 mas = 0.36 pc). The source is entering a significantly active phase with long-term increase in radio flux at cm wavelengths since 2005, and the increased activity at very-high-energy (VHE) gamma rays. In order to study properties of sub-pc-scale structure and the circumnuclear environment in 3C 84, we have conducted multi-epoch VLBI observations with the Korean VLBI Network (KVN) at 86 and 129 GHz, and monthly monitoring by the KVN and VERA Array (KaVA) at 43 GHz from 2015 August. Following the report in the previous KAS meeting (cf. 2016 KAS Autumn Annual Meeting, [구 GC-10]), we present further results mainly on the basis of twelve-epoch observations with KaVA at 43 GHz. Through the monthly monitoring with KaVA, we found that peak intensity of the pc-scale southern lobe (C3) was increased from $2.60\;Jy\;beam^{-1}$ in 2015 October to $9.80\;Jy\;beam^{-1}$ in 2016 June, corresponding to a flux increase of 3.7 times in eight months. We also detected change in direction of motion of C3 from transversal to outward with respect to C1, concurrently with the beginning of its flux increase in 2015 October. We consider that these phenomena are due to interaction of C3 with the ambient medium, and are related to the gamma-ray flare which has been detected with VHE gamma-ray telescopes such as MAGIC and VERITAS.

  • We report the performance of the 13.7-meter Taeduk Radio Astronomy Observatory (TRAO) radio telescope. The telescope has been equipped with a new receiver, SEQUOIA-TRAO, a new backend system, FFT2G, and a new VxWorks operating system. The receiver system features a 16-pixel focal plane array using high-performance MMIC preamplifiers; it shows very low system noise levels, with system noise temperatures from 150 K to 450 K at frequencies from 86 to 115 GHz. With the new backend system, we can simultaneously obtain 32 spectra, each with a velocity coverage of 163 km s-1 and a resolution of 0.04 km s-1 at 115 GHz. The new operating system, VxWorks, has successfully handled the LMTMC-TRAO observing software. The main observing method is the on-the-fly (OTF) mapping mode; a position-switching mode is available for small-area observations. Remote observing is provided. The antenna surface has been newly adjusted using digital photogrammetry, achieving a rms surface accuracy better than 130 ㎛. The pointing uncertainty is found to be less than 5" over the entire sky. We tested the new receiver system with multi-frequency observations in OTF mode. The aperture efficiencies are 43±1%, 42±1%, 37±1%, and 33±1%, the beam efficiencies are 45±2%, 48±2%, 46±2%, and 41±2% at 86, 98, 110, and 115 GHz, respectively.
