  • A modeling method for the modal and the transient vibration analysis of a multi-packet blade system excited by nozzle jet forces is presented in this paper. Blades are idealized as cantilever beams and the elastic structures like disc and shroud connecting blades are modeled as coupling stiffnesses. A modified Campbell diagram is proposed to identify true resonance frequencies of the multi-packet blade system. Different from the SAFE diagram that employs three dimensional space, the modified Campbell diagram proposed in this study employs a plane to find the true resonance frequencies. To verify the existence of true resonance frequencies, nozzle jet forces are modeled as periodic forces and transient vibration analysis were performed with the modeling method.

  • A numerical study for a two dimensional multi-jet with crossflow of the spent fluid has been carried out. Three different distributions of mass-flow rate at 5 jet exits were assumed to see their effects upon the flow characteristics, especially in the jet-flow region. For each distribution, various Reynolds numbers ranging from laminar to turbulent flows were considered. Results show that a fully developed laminar flow exists above a certain Reynolds number whose exact value depends upon the mass flow rate distribution. AS the Reynolds number increases, the flow becomes transitional from downstream and finally a fully developed turbulent flow forms in the jet-flow region. The critical Reynolds number where the fully developed turbulent flow forms is quite dependent upon the distribution of mass-flow rate. One interesting result is that the distribution of the skin friction coefficient along the inpingement plate in the jet-flow region shows a consistent dependency on the Reynolds number, i.e. inversely proportional to the square root of the Reynolds number, regardless of flow regime.

  • In this study, breakwater model which has several outlet pipes to discharge water is settled in the experimental open channel and mean velocity distributions of multi wall jet are measured. The length of flow of flow establishment of wall jet is shorter than that of free jet and decay rate of jet centerline longitudinal velocity along x is linear in 0.3 $\leq$ x/$\l_q$ $\leq$ 17. The rate of vertical width and lateral width spreading of multi wall jet is respectively 0.0753, 0.157~0.190.

  • In a severe accident of light water reactor (LWR), molten core material (corium) can be released into the wet cavity, and a fuel-coolant interaction (FCI) can occur. The molten jet with high speed is broken and fragmented into small debris, which may cause a steam explosion or a molten core concrete interaction (MCCI). Since the premixing stage where the jet breakup occurs has a large impact on the severe accident progression, the understanding and evaluation of the jet breakup phenomenon are highly important. Therefore, in this study, the jet breakup simulations were performed using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method which is a particle-based Lagrangian numerical method. For the multi-fluid system, the normalized density approach and improved surface tension model (CSF) were applied to the in-house SPH code (single GPU-based SOPHIA code) to improve the calculation accuracy at the interface of fluids. The jet breakup simulations were conducted in two cases: (1) jet breakup without structures, and (2) jet breakup with structures (control rod guide tubes). The penetration depth of the jet and jet breakup length were compared with those of the reference experiments, and these SPH simulation results are qualitatively and quantitatively consistent with the experiments.

  • The effect of triangular multi-tabs attached at the perimeter of jet nozzle on flow structure in the near field was investigated experimentally. A stereoscopic PIV(SPIV) system was employed to measure three orthogonal velocity components of the 3-D turbulent jet. In this study, two different types of sharp-edged jet nozzle having 4, 8 tabs were tested at the Reynolds number of Re=10,000. SPIV measurements were carried out at 5 cross-sectional planes. Six hundred instantaneous velocity fields were measured for each experimental condition and they were ensemble averaged to get spatial distributions of turbulent statistics such as mean velocity and turbulence intensity. Entrainment rate of surrounding fluid into the tabbed jets was estimated using the measured 3-D velocity field data. The strong vortex structure was induced for the jet flow with 4 tabs, increasing entrainment rate.

  • The present experiment investigates the effects of pore density f of aluminum foam heat sinks, the jet-to-jet spacing X and the nozzle plate-to-target surface spacing H of 3$\times$3 square impinging arrays on the averaged Nusselt number. The performance of the aluminum foam heat sinks and the rectangular plate heat sink is evaluated in terms of the enhancement factor. /equation omitted/. The multiple impinging jet with X/d=4.0 displays higher Nusselt numbers than single impinging jet for 12.0$\leq$H/d$\leq$20.0. With the variation of the jet-to-jet spacing, the aluminum foam heat sink of 10 PPI show higher Nusselt numbers than the 20 and 40 PPI aluminum foam heat sinks. Further, the 10 PPI aluminum foam heat sink demonstrates 26% higher enhancement factor than the rectangular plate heat sink in the range of 7000$\leq$Re$\leq$11000.

  • An experimental investigation is presented to study the effect nozzle spacing, jet to plate spacing and Reynolds number on the local heat transfer to normally upward impinging submerged circular water jets on a flat heated surface. Nozzle arrays are a single jet(nozzle dia. = 8 mm), a row of 3 jets(nozzle dia. = 4.6 mm, nozzle spacing = 37.5 mm) and a row of 5 jets(nozzle dia. = 3.6 mm, nozzle spacing = 25 mm), and jet to plate spacing ranging from 16∼80 mm(H/D = 2∼10) is tested. Reynolds number based on single jet exit condition is varied 30000∼70000($V_o$ = 3∼7 m/s). Except for the condition of H/D = 10, the average Nusselt number of multi-jet is higher than that of single jet. For H/D = 2, average Nusselt number is increased by 50.3∼82.5% for a row of 3 jets and by 52.9∼65.2% on a row of 5 jets when compared to the average Nusselt number on the single jet.

  • Metal cutting operations involve generation of heat due to friction between the tool and the pieces. This heat needs to be carried away otherwise it creates white spots. To reduce this abnormal heat cutting fluid is used. Cutting fluid also has an important role in the lubrication of the cutting edges of machine tools and the pieces they are shaping, and in sluicing away the resulting swarf. As a cutting fluid, water is a great conductor of heat but is not stable at high temperatures, so to improve stability an emulsion type mixed fluid with water and oil is often used. It is pumped over the cutting site of cutting machines as a state of atomized water droplet coated with oil by using jet. In this paper, to develop cutting fluid supplying nozzle to obtain ultra thin oil film for coating water droplet, a numerical analysis of three dimensional mixed fluid Jet through multi-stage nozzle was carried out by using a finite volume method. Jet flow characteristics such as nozzle exit velocity, development of mixing region, re-entrance and jet intensity were analyzed. Detailed mixing process of fluids such as air, water and oil in the nozzle were also investigated. It is easy to understand complex flow pattern in multi-stage nozzle. Important flow Information for advance design of cutting fluid supplying nozzle was drawn.

  • Flat panel display manufacturers are always investigating new techniques to improve productivity and reliability. For fluid dispense processes, Jet dispensing has shown benefits over traditional needle dispensing. Recent advancements in nozzle design and construction techniques enable jet dispensing capabilities far exceeding what has been previously achieved.
