Mechanical systems installed in transport devices, such as vehicles, airplanes, and ships, are mostly subject to translational accelerations at the joints during operations. This base acceleration excitation has a large influence on the performance of the system, therefore, its response must be well analyzed. However, the existing methods for dynamic analysis of structures have some limitations in use. This study presents a new numerical method using relative acceleration to solve these limitations. If the governing equation of motion is linear and the mass matrix, the damping matrix, and the stiffness matrix are constant over time in the finite element analysis, the proposed method can be applied to the transient behavior analysis and the harmonic response analysis of the structure. Because it is not necessary to introduce a virtual mass and the rigid body motions are removed from the analysis, it is possible to use not only the direct integration method in the time domain but also the mode superposition method to obtain the dynamic responses. This paper demonstrates with three examples how the present method is suitable for the dynamic analysis of a structure with multi-degree of freedom.
In this paper, an additional degree of freedom in phased multi-input multi-output (phased-MIMO) radar with any arbitrary desired covariance matrix is proposed using space-time codes. By using the proposed method, any desired transmit covariance matrix in MIMO radar (phased-MIMO radars) can be realized by employing fully correlated base waveforms such as phased-array radars and simply extending them to different time slots with predesigned phases and amplitudes. In the proposed method, the transmit covariance matrix depends on the base waveform and space-time codes. For simplicity, a base waveform can be selected arbitrarily (ie, all base waveforms can be fully correlated, similar to phased-array radars). Therefore, any desired covariance matrix can be achieved by using a very simple phased-array structure and space-time code in the transmitter. The main advantage of the proposed scheme is that it does not require diverse uncorrelated waveforms. This considerably reduces transmitter hardware and software complexity and cost. One the receiver side, multiple signals can be analyzed jointly in the time and space domains to improve the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio.
In real life, a decision-maker can assign multiple values for pairwise comparison with a certain confidence level. Studies incorporating multi-choice parameters in multi-criteria decision-making methods are lacking in the literature. So, In this work, an extension of the Best-Worst Method (BWM) with multi-choice pairwise comparisons and multi-choice confidence parameters has been proposed. This work incorporates an extension to the original BWM with multi-choice uncertainty and confidence level. The BWM presumes the Decision-Maker to be fully confident about preference criteria vectors best to others & others to worst. In the proposed work, we consider uncertainty by giving decision-makers freedom to have multiple choices for preference comparison and having a corresponding confidence degree for each choice. This adds one more parameter corresponding to the degree of confidence of each choice to the already existing MCDM, i.e. multi-choice BWM and yields acceptable results similar to other studies. Also, the consistency ratio remained low within the acceptable range. Two real-life case studies are presented to validate our study on proposed models.
The superior performance of the spherical actuator is establishing a new trend in the industry. Spherical actuators can perform multiple degrees-of-freedom (DOF) motions by using only one actuator. Therefore, a multi-DOF device using the spherical actuator can reduce weight and simplify the structure. This paper proposes a new spherical actuator that uses the operational principle of a rotational voice coil motor. The effectiveness of the actuator is verified through 3-D finite element method.
Limitations of the simple single degree of freedom vibration isolation theory in real applications are discussed and a theory of multi-dimensional vibration/noise isolation by power approach is introduced. Illustrations of the application to compressor of an air-conditioner are presented together with problems caused by approximations. Then possible sources of distortions in the vibration power estimation are looked into and some relevant research topics are suggested.
In automotive industries, one of major issues is the shifting shock, which is brought out when two clutches are engaged in an automatic transmission. The engagement and disengagement if two clutches means the variation of the D.O.F(degree of freedom) of system. Therefore to analyze the shifting performance, the variation of D.O.F should be considered in detail. Generally, the programs for analyzing the shifting transients have been developed as the problem-dependent codes because the artificial maris were usually used to indicate the change of shifting phase. To develop a software applicable to a general mechanism of transmissions, a self-determining algorithm of D.O.F must be applied. Through the experiences for the last several years, a generalized analysis software of shifting mechanism(so called by POTAS-MSM Version 2.0) has been developed. In this study, some major ideas of the software and the concept for the analysis of shifting characteristics are presented. In addition to that, this paper shows how to self -determine D.O.F of he multi-slipping systems using the stick-slip criterion on a single slipping mechanism. By using this software, the shifting characteristics of a vehicle are analyzed and compared with the experimental results.
Vibration of a non-linear system with multiple degrees of freedom under random parametric excitations was evaluated by probabilistic method. The non-linear characteristic terms of system structure were quasi-linearized and excitation terms were remained as they were. An analytical method where the expectation values of square mean of error was minimized was used. The numerical results were compared with those obtained by Monte Carlo simulation. A linear congruential generator and Box-Muller method were used in Monte Carlo simulation. The comparison showed the results by probabilistic method agreed well with those by Monte Carlo simulation.

Endoscopes for industrial and medical fields are expected to have multi degree-of-freedom (DOF) motions. A multi-DOF ultrasonic motor we developed consists of a spherical rotor and a bar-shaped stator, and the rotor rotates around three perpendicular axes using three natural vibration modes of the stator. In this study, a multi-DOF unilateral master-slave system for active endoscope using the multi-DOF ultrasonic motor is developed. The configurations of master and slave arms for active endoscope are similar, so that an operator can easily handle the master-slave system. First, driving characteristics of the multi-DOF ultrasonic motor are measured in order to design the slave arm and its controller. Next, the master arm and the slave arm are designed. Then, the unilateral feedback controller for the master-slave system is developed. Finally, the motion control tests of rotor are conducted. As a result, the possibility of the endoscope is confirmed.
Targeting a floating wave and offshore wind hybrid power generation system (FWWHybrid) designed in the Republic of Korea, this study examines the impact of the interaction, with multiple wave energy converters (WECs) placed on the platform, on platform motion. To investigate how the motion of WECs affects the behavior of the FWWHybrid platform, it was numerically compared with a scenario involving a 'single-body' system, where multiple WECs are constrained to the platform. In the case of FWWHybrid, because the platform and multiple WECs move in response to waves simultaneously as a 'multi-body' system, hydrodynamic interactions between these entities come into play. Additionally, the power take-off (PTO) mechanism between the platform and individual WECs is introduced for power production. First, the hydrostatic/dynamic coefficients required for numerical analysis were calculated in the frequency domain and then used in the time domain analysis. These simulations are performed using the extended HARP/CHARM3D code developed from previous studies. By conducting regular wave simulations, the response amplitude operator (RAO) for the platform of both single-body and multi-body scenarios was derived and subsequently compared. Next, to ascertain the difference in response in the real sea environment, this study also includes an analysis of irregular waves. As the floating body maintains its position through connection to a catenary mooring line, the impact of the slowly varying wave drift load cannot be disregarded. To assess the influence of the 2nd-order wave exciting load, irregular wave simulations were conducted, dividing them into cases where it was not considered and cases where it was included. The analysis of multi-degree-of-freedom behavior confirmed that the action of multiple WECs had a substantial impact on the platform's response.
