  • The amount of data stored, processed and transmitted in the multi-media systems has been growing very fast, especially for the image data. For example, it takes 0.75Mbytes to store 512 12 pixels of 24-bit color image. A video signal with 30 frames per second will require 22.5Mbytes of storage space. To solve this problem, we need a good image compression technique. Recently, many researches on the image compression technique based on the wavelet transform are being pursued to overcome the problems of traditional JPEG. This paper describes the architecture and design of two-dimensional wavelet transform circuit. To keep the sire of the circuit small, we tried to minimize the internal storage space by using external SDRAM. This circuit was designed in Verilog-HDL, synthesized using Design Compiler and verified using Verilog-XL.

  • For the DC-free encoding of source data, the Guided Scrambling (GS) technique is widely used as multi-mode coding in the optical data storage system. For DC-suppression GS coding in the holographic data storage system, the conservative array and balanced coding criteria are proposed. In this paper, equivalent integer programming models are developed to determine the optimal control bits for the minimum digital sum value (MDSV), conservative array, and balanced coding criteria. Using the proposed integer programming models, we compare the performance of GS encoding for the various combination of control bit/array sizes and scrambling polynomials.

  • The methods for determining the diffusion parameters for the diffusion of d-limonene, a major volatile compound of orange juice, through a multi-layered food packaging material and predicting its absorption into the packaging material have been investigated. The packaging material used was the 1.5-mm thick multi-layered packaging material composed of high impact polystyrene (HIPS), polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC), and low density polyethylene (LDPE). Orange juice was placed in a cell where volatiles were absorbed in the sample package and kept at $23{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ for 72 hr. The d-limonene absorbed in a 1.5-mm thick multi-layered food packaging material was analyzed by a solid phase micro-extraction (SPME). The absorption parameters for the absorption of d-limonene in the packaging material were determined and absorption of d-limonene into the packaging material was predicted using absorption storage data. The SPME desorption at $60^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr resulted in the most sensitive and reproducible results. The diffusion coefficients of d-limonene in the packaging material and the partition coefficient at $23{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ were approximately $1-2{\times}10^{12}m^2$/s and 0.03, respectively. The absorption profile no earlier than 30 hr was fit well by a model derived from the Fick's law.

  • Using biometrics to verify a person's identity has several advantages over the present practices of personal identification numbers (PINs) and passwords. At the same time, improvements in VLSI technology have recently led to the introduction of smart cards with 32-bit RISC processors. To gain maximum security in verification systems using biometrics, verification as well as storage of the biometric pattern must be done in the smart card. However, because of the limited resources (processing power and memory space) of the smart card, integrating biometrics into it is still an open challenge. In this paper, we propose a fingerprint verification algorithm using a multi-resolution accumulator array that can be executed in restricted environments such as the smart card. We first evaluate both the number of instructions executed and the memory requirement for each step of a typical fingerprint verification algorithm. We then develop a memory-efficient algorithm for the most memory-consuming step (alignment) using a multi-resolution accumulator array. Our experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can reduce the required memory space by a factor of 40 and can be executed in real time in resource-constrained environments without significantly degrading accuracy.

  • NAND multilevel cell (MLC) flash memory is widely issued because it can increase the capability of storage by storing two or more bits to a single cell. However if a number of levels in a cell increases, some physical features like cell to cell interference result cell voltage shift and it is known that a VT shift is unidirectional. To reduce errors by the effects, we can consider error correcting codes(ECC) or signal processing methods. We focus signal processing methods for the cell to cell interference voltage shift effects and propose the algorithms which reduce the effects of the voltage shift by estimating it and making level read voltages be adaptive. These new algorithms can be applied with ECC at the same time, therefore these algorithms are efficient for MLC error correcting ability. We show the bit error rate simulation results of the algorithms and compare the performance of the algorithms.

  • We have tried to enhance the density of the near-field optical memory and to improve the recording/readout speed. The current optical memory has the limitation in both density and speed. This barrier due to the far-field nature can be overcome by the use of the near-field$^{(1)}$ . The optical data storage density can be increased by reducing the size of the nanometric aperture where the near-field is obtained. To fabricate the aperture in precise dimension, we applied the orientation-dependent / anisotropic etching property of crystal Si often employed in the field of MEMS$^{(2)}$ . And so we fabricated the 10$\times$10 aperture array. This array will be also the indispensable part for speeding up. One will see the possibility of the multi-tracking pickup in the phase changing type memory through this array$^{(3)}$ . This aperture array will be expected to write the bit-mark whose size is about 100nm. We will show the recent result obtained. (omitted)

  • Storage devices such as memories are widely used in various electronic products. They require high-density memory and currently the data has been stored in multi-level format, that results in high error rate. In this paper, we apply error correction schemes that are widely used in communication system to the storage devices for satisfying low bit error rate and high code rate. In A WGN channel with average BER $10^{-5}$ and $5{\times}10^{-6}$, we study error correction schemes for 4-1evel cell to achieve target code rate 0.99 and target BER $10^{-11}$ and $10^{-13}$, respectively. Since block codes may perform better than the concatenated codes for high code rate, and it is important to use less degraded inner code even when many bits are punctured. The performance of concatenated codes using general feedforward systematic convolutional codes are worse than the block code only scheme. The simulation results show that RSC codes must be used as inner codes to achieve good performance of punctured convolutional codes for high code rate.

  • For speech coding, a vocal tract is modeled using Linear Predictive Coding (LPC) coefficients. The LPC coefficients are typically transformed to Line Spectral Frequency (LSF) parameters which are advantageous for linear interpolation and quantization. If multidimensional LSF data are quantized directly using Vector-Quantization (VQ), high rate-distortion performance can be obtained by fully utilizing intra-frame correlation. In practice, since this direct VQ system cannot be used due to high computational complexity and memory requirement, Split VQ (SVQ) is used where a multidimensional vector is split into multilple sub-vectors for quantization. The LSF parameters also have high inter-frame correlation, and thus Predictive SVQ (PSVQ) is utilized. PSVQ provides better rate-distortion performance than SVQ. In this paper, to implement the optimal predictors in PSVQ for voice storage devices, we propose Multi-Frame AR-model based SVQ (MF-AR-SVQ) that considers the inter-frame correlations with multiple previous frames. Compared with conventional PSVQ, the proposed MF-AR-SVQ provides 1 bit gain in terms of spectral distortion without significant increase in complexity and memory requirement.

  • This paper presents a self-powered sensor node circuit using photovoltaic and vibration energy harvesting. The harvested energy from a solar cell and a vibration device(PZT) is stored in a storage capacitor. The stored energy is managed by a PMU(Power Management Unit). In order to supply a stable voltage to the sensor node, an LDO(Low Drop Out Regulator) is used. The LDO drives a temperature sensor and a SAR ADC(Successive Approximate Register Analog-to-Digital Converter), and 10-bit digital output data corresponding to current temperature is obtained. The proposed circuit is designed in a 0.35um CMOS process, and the designed chip size including PADs is $1.1mm{\times}0.95mm$.

  • This paper has been studied a wavelet based still image transmission over the wireless channel. EZW(Embedded Zerotree Wavelet) is an efficient and scalable wavelet based image coding technique, which provides progressive transfer of signal resulted in multi-resolution representation. It reduces therefore the reduce cost of storage media. Although EZW has many advantages, it is very sensitive on error. Because coding are performed in subband by subband, and it uses arithmetic coding which is a kind of variable length coding. Therefore only 1∼2bit error may degrade quality of the entire image. So study of error localization and recovery are required. This paper investigates the use of reversible variable length codes(RVLC) and data partitioning. RVLC are known to have a superior error recovery property due to their two-way decoding capability and data partitioning is essential to applying RVLC. In this work, we show that appropriate data partitioning length for each SNR(Signal-to-Noise Power Ratio) and error localization in wireless channel.
