  • In this paper, a systematic beam splitter design for multi-beam forming is proposed. The objective of this research is to a design beam splitter that splits and focuses scattering microwaves into intense beams in multiple directions. It is difficult to split multi-beam to non-specific directions with theoretical approaches. Therefore, instead of using transformation optics(TO), which is a widely used process for controlling electromagnetic wave propagation, we used a systematic design process called the phase field design method to obtain an optimal topological structure of beam splitter. The objective function is to maximize the norm of electric field of the target areas of each direction. To avoid island structure and obtain the structure in one body, volume constraint is added to the optimization problem by using augmented Lagrangian. Target frequency is set to X-band 10GHz. The optimal beam splitter performed well in multi-beam forming and the transported electric energy of target areas improved. A frequency dependency test was conducted in the X-band to determine effective frequency range.

  • The available underwater acoustic spectrum is limited. Therefore, it is imperative to avoid frequency interference from overlapping frequencies of underwater acoustic equipment (UAE) for the co-existence of the UAE. Cognitive technology that senses idle spectrum and actively avoids frequency interference is an efficient method to facilitate the collision-free operation of multiple UAE with overlapping frequencies. Cognitive technology is adopted to identify the frequency usage of UAE to apply cognitive technology. To this end, we investigated two principle underwater acoustic sources: UAE and marine animals. The UAE is classified into five types: underwater acoustic modem, acoustic positioning system, multi-beam echo-sounder, side-scan sonar, and sub-bottom profiler. We analyzed the parameters of the frequency band, directivity, range, and depth, which play a critical role in the design of underwater acoustic cognitive technology. Moreover, the frequency band of several marine species was also examined. The mid-frequency band from 10 - 40 kHz was found to be the busiest. Lastly, this study provides useful insights into the design of underwater acoustic cognitive technologies, where it is essential to avoid interference among the UAE in this mid-frequency band.

  • Wave energy dissipation and energy transfer between wave components, during the directional wave breakings, are investigated. Directional incipient and plunging breakers were generated by focusing the multi-frequency and multi-directional wave components at a designed location, based on a constant wave amplitude and a constant wave steepness frequency spectrum. The time series of surface wave elevation was measured at 9 different locations around the wave focusing point, using a wave gauge array. In order to examine the variation of the directional spreading function, the horizontal velocity of fluid motion was also measured. By comparing energy spectrums, before and after the breaking, the characteristics of energy dissipation and energy transfer, caused by wave breaking, are investigated. Their dependencies on directionality, as well as frequency, are analyzed. The breakings significantly dissipate wave energy, through energy transfer, in the upper region of the peak-frequency band, while enhancing wave energy in the low-frequency band.

  • In this paper, a dual-band integer-N frequency divider is proposed for 2.4/5.2 GHz multi-standard wireless local area networks. It consists of a multi-modulus imbalance phase switching prescaler and two all-stage programmable counters. It is able to provide dual-band operation with high resolution while maintaining a low power consumption. This frequency divider is integrated with a 5 GHz VCO for multi-standard applications. Measurement results show that the VCO with frequency divider can work at 5.2 GHz with a total power consumption of 22 mW.

  • For measuring quad-band module system using WiBro network, frequency converter was developed. The size of the fabricated frequency converter is $3.1cm{\times}3.1cm{\times}0.4cm$. Noise figure of the receiver part of the frequency converter was 2.62 ~ 3.45 dB, EVM of that is -37.5 dB ~ -34.5 dB. And EVM of the transmission part was -42.5 ~ -35.5 dB. Quad-band module was fabricated with the developed frequency converter. Testing the quad-band module in 2.3 GHz WiBro network results the excellent internet connection for 2.5 GHz, 3.5 GHz and 5.5 GHz band.

  • In this paper, fully embedded 2.4GHz WLAN band pass filter (BPF) was investigated into a multi-layered organic packaging substrate using high Q spiral stacked inductors and high Dk MIM capacitors for low cost RF System on Package (SOP) applications. The proposed 2.4GHz WLAN BPF was designed by modifying chebyshev second order filter circuit topology. It was comprised of two parallel LC resonators for obtaining two transmission zeros. It was designed by using 2D circuit and 3D EM simulators for finding out optimal geometries and verifying their applicability. It exhibited an insertion loss of max -1.7dB and return loss of min -l7dB. The two transmission zeros were observed at 1.85 and 6.7GHz, respectively. In the low frequency band of $1.8GHz{\sim}1.9GHz$, the stop band suppression of min -23dB was achieved. In the high frequency band of $4.1GHz{\sim}5.4GHz$, the stop band suppression of min -l8dB was obtained. It was the first embedded and the smallest one of the filters formed into the organic packaging substrate. It has a size of $2.2{\times}1.8{\times}0.77mm^3$.

  • In this paper, we designed a compact frequency synthesizer with multi-function for Ka-band seeker. DDS(Direct Digital Synthesizer) is applied to generate various waveform and to cover high-speed frequency sweep. In order to reduce size, waveform generator and frequency up-converter are integrated in one module. Proposed frequency synthesizer provides precise detection and tracking waveform for low and high speed targets. It is observed that fabricated synthesizer performs $0.45{\mu}sec$ frequency switching time and -93.69 dBc/Hz phase noise at offset 1 kHz. The size of the synthesizer is kept within 120 mm width, 120 mm length and 22 mm height.

  • Due to the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) modernization, the recently launched GNSS satellites transmit signals at various frequency bands of L1, L2 and L5. Considering the Korea Positioning System (KPS) signal and other GNSS augmentation signals in the future, there is a high probability of applying more complex communication techniques to the new GNSS signals. For the reason, GNSS receivers based on flexible Software Defined Radio (SDR) concept needs to be developed to evaluate various experimental communication techniques by accessing each signal processing module in detail. In this paper, we introduce a multi-constellation (GPS/Galileo/BeiDou) multi-band (L1/L2/L5) SDR by utilizing Ettus USRP N210. The signal reception module of the developed SDR includes down-conversion, analog-to-digital conversion, signal acquisition, and tracking. The down-conversion module is designed based on the super-heterodyne method fitted for MHz sampling. The signal acquisition module performs PRN code generation and FFT operation and the signal tracking module implements delay/phase/frequency locked loops only by software. In general, it is difficult to sample entire main lobe components of L5 band signals due to their higher chipping rate compared with L1 and L2 band signals. Experiment result shows that it is possible to acquire and track the under-sampled signals by the developed SDR.

  • In this paper, a novel hybrid method for multi-focus image fusion is proposed. The method combines the advantages of wavelet transform-based methods and focus-measure-based methods to achieve an improved fusion result. The input images are first decomposed into different frequency sub-bands using the discrete wavelet transform (DWT). The focus measure of each sub-band is then calculated using the Laplacian of Gaussian (LoG) operator, and the sub-band with the highest focus measure is selected as the focused sub-band. The focused sub-band is sharpened using an unsharp masking filter to preserve the details in the focused part of the image. Finally, the sharpened focused sub-bands from all input images are fused using the maximum intensity fusion method to preserve the important information from all focus images. The proposed method has been evaluated using standard multi focus image fusion datasets and has shown promising results compared to existing methods.
