  • It is usual that underground structures are constructed within a multi-layered medium. In this paper, an efficient numerical modelling of multi-layered structural systems is studied using coupled analysis of finite elements and boundary elements. The finite elements are applied to the area in which the material nonlinearity dominates, and the boundary elements are applied to the far field where the nonlinearity is relatively weak. In the boundary element modelling of the multi-layered medium, fundamental solutions are not readily available. Thus, methods which can utilize existing Kelvin solutions are sought for the interior multi-layered domain problem. The interior domain problem which has piecewise homogeneous layers is analyzed using boundary elements with Kelvin solution, by discretizing each homogeneous subdomain and enforcing compatibility and equilibrium conditions between interfaces. Developed methodology is verified by comparing its results with those from the finite element analysis and it is concluded that coupled analysis using boundary elements and finite elements can be reasonable and efficient.

  • The load-following operation of small modular reactors (SMRs) requires accurate prediction of transient behaviors that can occur in the balance of plants (BOP) and the nuclear steam supply system (NSSS). However, 1-D thermal-hydraulics analysis codes developed for safety and performance analysis have conventionally excluded the BOP from the simulation by assuming ideal boundary conditions for the main steam and feed water (MS/FW) systems, i.e., an open loop. In this study, we introduced a lumped model of BOP fluid system and coupled it with NSSS without any ideal boundary conditions, i.e., in a closed loop. Various methods for coupling boundary conditions at MS/FW were tested to validate their combination in terms of minimizing numerical instability, which mainly arises from the coupled boundaries. The method exhibiting the best performance was selected and applied to a transient simulation of an integrated NSSS and BOP system of a SMART. For a transient event with core power change of 100-20-100%, the simulation exhibited numerical stability throughout the system without any significant perturbation of thermal-hydraulic parameters. Thus, the introduced boundary-condition coupling method and BOP fluid system model can expectedly be employed for the transient simulation and performance analysis of SMRs requiring daily load-following operations.

  • In this paper, we consider the multi-point boundary value problems for one-dimensional p-Laplacian at resonance: $({\phi}_p(x'(t)))'=f(t,x(t),x'(t))$, subject to the boundary value conditions: ${\phi}_p(x'(0))={\sum}^{n-2}_{i=1}{\alpha}_i{\phi}_p(x'({\epsilon}i)),\;{\phi}_p(x'(1))={\sum}^{m-2}_{i=1}{\beta}_j{\phi}_p(x'({\eta}_j))$ where ${\phi}_p(s)=/s/^{p-2}s,p>1,\;{\alpha}_i(1,{\le}i{\le}n-2){\in}R,{\beta}_j(1{\le}j{\le}m-2){\in}R,0<{\epsilon}_1<{\epsilon}_2<...<{\epsilon}_{n-2}1,\;0<{\eta}1<{\eta}2<...<{\eta}_{m-2}<1$, By applying the extension of Mawhin's continuation theorem, we prove the existence of at least one solution. Our result is new.

  • As the application of the MEMS parts increases, the structural safety of MEMS appears importantly. A lot of MEMS parts are made by a multi-grain silicon wafer, which is an orthotropic material. Moreover directions of the materials on each grain are distributed randomly. The stress analysis for the multi-grain is important factor in order to apply the MEMS parts to industrial applications. The finite element method (FEM) is commonly used by a stress analysis method but the boundary element method (BEM) is known as the result of the BEM is more accurate than that of the FEM since the fundamental solution are used. In this study, we derived the boundary integration equation for the orthotropic material by applying fundamental solutions with complex variables. The multi-region analysis procedure for the BEM and the multi-grain generation procedure by a random process technique are developed in order to apply the analysis of the multi-grain orthotropic material. The discontinuous element is used in order to remove the comer problem in the BEM. The results of the present method are compared with those of the finite element method in order to verify the present procedure.

  • This work presents a boundary estimation approach in electrical impedance imaging for binary-mixture fields based on a parallel structured multi-layer neural network. The interfacial boundaries are expressed with the truncated Fourier series and the unknown Fourier coefficients are estimated with the parallel structure of multi-layer neural network. Results from numerical experiments shows that the proposed approach is insensitive to the measurement noise and has a strong possibility in the visualization of binary mixtures for a real time monitoring.

  • The existence of $n$ positive solutions is established for second order multi-point boundary value problem at resonance where $n$ is an arbitrary natural number. The proof is based on a theory of fixed point index for A-proper semilinear operators defined on cones due to Cremins.

  • In this paper, we establish some sufficient conditions for the existence of positive solutions for a class of multi-point boundary value problem for fractional functional differential equations involving the Caputo fractional derivative. Our results are based on two fixed point theorems. Two examples are also provided to illustrate our main results.

  • Starting from the Eu's GH(Generalized Hydrodynamic) theory, the multi-species GH numerical solver is developed in this research and its computatyional behaviors are examined for the hypersonic rarefied flow over an axisymmetric body. To improve the accuracy of the developed multi-species GH solver, various slip-wall boundary conditions are tested and the computed results are compared. Additionally, in order to validate the entropy characteristics of the GH equation, the entropy production and entropy generation rates of the GH equation are investigated in the 1-dimensional normal shock structure test at a high Knudsen number.

  • The value and functionality of boundary barriers in rural villages have been neglected in the aspects as the buffer zone(boundary barrier) that links between the inside space(housing site) and the outside space(road). On this understanding, this study evaluated conservation value, economical efficiency and durability by the types and materials of the boundary barriers in rural village through Multi-attribute Decision Making. By applying to the current situations of boundary barriers on total 21 case study villages, each factor value was measured. And using Matrix Analysis Technique, the boundary barriers are classified into 4 types and the improvement ways for each type were proposed. As a result, the durability of boundary barriers in rural villages showed similarity value(more than 0.85 out of 1). But economical efficiency of those was low(less than 0.5 out of 1) and those functionalities were very lacking(about 0.3 out of 1). In the conclusion, the maintenance of boundary barriers in rural villages requires the policy that is able to complement conservation value and economical efficiency and is proper to the characteristic of each village. These renewable policies would contribute to the increase of the value of rural amenity as well as creation of economical and social value.
