  • Heterogeneous multi-core environment integrated with different functional cores is the powerful tool for the embedded system that became more complex and diverse. Specialized application requires one chip solution with different operating system over different cores. But this heterogeneity causes difficult configuration of the development environment, makes hard to develop and test software. We show the environment of heterogeneous multi-core processing can be mapped to symmetric multi-core environment. We construct Linux based RPMsg for the data exchange between processes similar with the heterogeneous multi-core RPMsg and experiment that the proposed environment can be used to reduce the steps of the heterogeneous multi-core application development. With this simplification, we suggest simulation method for easy development and debugging the heterogeneous multicore environment that makes complex steps to simple.

  • The emerging NVMe-based multi-queue SSDs provides a high bandwidth by parallel I/O, i.e., each core performs I/O through its dedicated queue in parallel with other cores. To provide a bandwidth share for each application with I/O, a fair-share scheduler that provides a bandwidth share to each core is required. In this study, we proposed a multi-core scalable fair-queuing algorithm for multi-queue SSDs. The algorithm adopts randomization to minimize the inter-core synchronization overheads and provides a weight-proportional bandwidth share to each core. The results of our experiments indicated that the proposed algorithm gives accurate bandwidth partitioning and outperforms the existing FlashFQ scheduler, regardless of the number of cores for a Linux kernel with block-mq.

  • OpenMP is becoming more and more useful as a simple parallel processing paradigm on SMP (Shared Memory Multi-Processors) computing environment with the development of multi-core processors. However, very few data is available publically regarding the OpenMP performance in CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics). In the present study a CFD test suite is prepared for the performance evaluation of OpenMP on various multi-core systems. The test suite is composed of two-dimensional numerical simulations for inviscid/viscous and reacting/non-reacting flows using three different levels of grid systems. One to five test runs were carried out on various systems from dual-core dual threads to 16-core 32-threads systems by changing the number of threads engaged for each test up to 80. The results exhibit some interesting results and the lessons learned from the tests would be quite helpful for the further use of OpenMP for CFD studies using multi-core processor systems.

  • As the process technology scales down and integration densities continue to increase, interconnection has become one of the most important factors in performance of recent multi-core processors. Recently, to reduce the delay due to interconnection, 3D architecture has been adopted in designing multi-core processors. In 3D multi-core processors, multiple cores are stacked vertically and each core on different layers are connected by direct vertical TSVs(through-silicon vias). Compared to 2D multi-core architecture, 3D multi-core architecture reduces wire length significantly, leading to decreased interconnection delay and lower power consumption. Despite the benefits mentioned above, 3D design technique cannot be practical without proper solutions for hotspots due to high temperature. In this paper, we propose three floorplan schemes for reducing the peak temperature in 3D multi-core processors. According to our simulation results, the proposed floorplan schemes are expected to mitigate the thermal problems of 3D multi-core processors efficiently, resulting in improved reliability. Moreover, processor performance improves by reducing the performance degradation due to DTM techniques. Power consumption also can be reduced by decreased temperature and reduced execution time.

  • As the process technology scales down, an interconnection has became a major performance constraint for multi-core processors. Recently, in order to mitigate the performance bottleneck of the interconnection for multi-core processors, a 3D integration technique has drawn quite attention. The 3D integrated multi-core processor has advantage for reducing global wire length, resulting in a performance improvement. However, it causes serious thermal problems due to increased power density. For this reason, to design efficient 3D multi-core processors, thermal-aware design techniques should be considered. In this paper, we analyze the temperature on the 3D multi-core processors in function unit level through various experiments. We also present temperature characteristics by varying application features, cooling characteristics, and frequency levels on 3D multi-core processors. According to our experimental results, following two rules should be obeyed for thermal-aware 3D processor design. First, to optimize the thermal profile of cores, the core with higher cooling efficiency should be clocked at a higher frequency. Second, to lower the temperature of cores, a workload with higher thermal impact should be assigned to the core with higher cooling efficiency.

  • Recently, multi-core processors have been drawing significant interest from the embedded systems research and industry communities due mainly to their potential for achieving high performance and fault-tolerance at low cost in such products as automobiles and cell phones. To process multimedia data, a scheduling algorithm is required to meet timing constraints of periodic tasks in the system. Though Pfair scheduling algorithm can meet all the timing constraints while achieving 100% utilization on multi-core based system theoretically, however, the algorithm incurs high scheduling overheads including frequent core migrations and system-wide synchronizations. To mitigate the problems, we propose a real-time scheduling algorithm for multi-core based system so that system-wide scheduling is performed only when it is absolutely necessary. Otherwise the proposed algorithm performs scheduling within each core independently. The experimental results by extensive simulations show that the proposed algorithm dramatically reduces the scheduling overheads up to as negligible one when the utilization is under 80%.

  • The reconstruction on the computed tomography requires much time for calculation. The calculation time rapidly increases with enlarging matrix size for improving image quality. Multi-core processor, multi-core CPU, has widely used nowadays and has provided the reduction of the calculation time through multi-threads. In this study, the calculation time of the reconstruction process would improved using multi-threads based on the multi-core processor. The Pthread and the OpenMP used for multi-threads were used in convolution and back projection steps that required much time in the reconstruction. The Pthread and the OpenMP showed similar results in the speedup and the efficiency.

  • With the increasing popularity of multi-core processors, they have been adopted even in embedded systems. Under this circumstance many multimedia applications can be parallelized on multi-core platforms because they usually require heavy computations and extensive memory accesses. This paper proposes an efficient thread-level parallel implementation for color space conversion on multi-core CPU. Thread-level parallelism has been becoming very useful parallel processing paradigm especially on shared memory computing systems. In this work, it is exploited by allocating different input pixels to each thread for concurrent loop executions. For the performance evaluation, this paper evaluate the performace improvements for color conversion on multi-core processors based on the processing speed comparison between its serial implementation and parallel ones. The results shows that thread-level parallel implementations show the overall similar ratios of performance improvements regardless of different multi-cores.

  • The current embedded devices are growing rapidly in the multi-core, and these demand fast boot time. But method of previous boot uses core only one. The method includes parallel techniques and modification of CPU Frequency policy. Parallel methods, after analyzing the Android boot process with analysis tool, applied to location where a lot of CPU operation. CPU Frequency policy is modified for high performance of core. The proposed method was applied to S5PV310 dual core and Exynos4412 quad core embedded system. As a result of the experiment, we found that the proposed method makes boot time fast about 20.71% and 31.34% in dual core and quad core environment as compared with the previous method.
