  • As the International Maritime Organization (IMO) recently introduced the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) for new ships building and the Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator (EEOI) for ship operation, thus an accurate estimation of added resistance of ships advancing in waves has become necessary. In the present study, OpenFOAM, computational fluid dynamics libraries of which source codes are opened to the public, was used to calculate the added resistance and motions of the KCS. Unstructured grid using a hanging-node and cut-cell method was used to generate dense grid around a wave and KCS. A dynamic deformation mesh method was used to consider the motions of the KCS. Five wavelengths from a short wavelength (${\lambda}/LPP=0.65$) to a long wavelength (${\lambda}/LPP=1.95$) were considered. The added resistance and the heave & pitch motions calculated for various waves were compared with the results of model experiments.

  • The planing craft is designed specifically to achieve comparatively high speed on the surface of the water. Most of planing crafts have installed the spray strip in decreasing of wave impaction and improving motion performance of rolling and pitching et al. It is known to reduce the spray and frictional resistance by the effect of lift and improvement of wave profile in high speed. In this paper, the high speed planing crafts with & without spray strip in bottom were performed to compare the resistance performance by model-test. In conclusion, the high speed planing crafts with spray strip in bottom was proved to effect of the resistance decrement of $3.0{\sim}5.0%$.

  • The hydrodynamic characteristics of amphibious assault vehicles are investigated using commercial CFD code, STAR-CCM+. Resistance performances of a displacement-type vehicle and a semi-planing type vehicle are analyzed in calm water. The self-propelled model is also computed for the semi-planing type vehicle. All computations are performed using an overset mesh system and a RANS based flow-solver coupled with a two-degree of freedom equations of motion. A moving reference frame is applied to simulate revolutions of impeller blades for a waterjet propulsion system. Grid dependency tests are performed to evaluate discretization errors for the mesh systems. The numerical analysis results are compared with the experimental results obtained from model tests. It is shown that RANS is capable of investigating the resistance and self-propulsion characteristics of high-speed amphibious assault vehicles. It is also found that a fully covered side skirt, which is covering tracks, reduces resistance and stern trim, besides increasing propulsive efficiency.

  • An analysis has been conducted of the flow characteristics and pumping performance of a thermopneumatic micropump with electrically conducting fluid. In the present study, considered is a thermopneumatic micropump for electrically conducting fluids with electromagnetic resistance alternately exerted at the inlet and outlet by alternately applied magnetic fields. A model of Prescribed Deformation is used for the motion of the membrane. Here, the pumping performance of the micropump and flow characteristics of the electrically conducting fluid are investigated in the range of Hartmann number less than 30. The current numerical study shows that the net flow rate through the micropump is almost proportional to the strength of the applied magnetic field.

  • In this study, R/S analysis which was proposed by Mandelbrot & Wallis(1969) was applied to evaluate the presence of the fractal property in the cone tip resistance of in-situ CPT data. Hurst exponents(H) were evaluated in the range of $0.660\sim0.990$ and the average was 0.875. It was confirmed that a cone tip resistance data had the characteristic of fractals and it was expected that cone tip resistance data sets are well approximated by a fBm process with an Hurst exponent near 0.875. It was also observed that the boundary between layers were obviously identified as a result of R/S analysis and it will be usage in practices.

  • In this paper, a two-phase flow solver $HiFoam^{(R)}$ has been developed based on the $OpenFOAM^{(R)}$ to predict resistance of a ship in calm water. The VOF method of $OpenFOAM^{(R)}$ was reviewed and a simple flux limiter was introduced to enhance the robustness of the solver. The procedure for predicting ship motion was modified by introducing Quasi-Steady Fluid-Body Interaction (QS-FBI) with least square regression to improve the efficiency. Other minor factors were considered as well in terms of the efficiency and robustness. The HiFoam was applied to KCS and JBC simulations to validate its efficiency and accuracy by comparing the results to experimental data and STAR-CCM+. The $HiFoam^{(R)}$ was also applied to various ships and it showed good agreements to the experimental data.

  • In this paper, the cooling performance of a microchannel heat sink with nano-particle-fluid suspensions ('nanofluids') is numerically investigated. By using theoretical models of thermal conductivity and viscosity of nanofluids that account for the fundamental role of Brownian motion respectively, we investigate the temperature contours and thermal resistance of a microchannel heat sink with nanofluids such as 6nm copper-in-water and 2nm diamond-in-water. The results show that a microchannel heat sink with nanofluids has high cooling performance compared with the cooling performance of that with water, the classical coolant. Nanofluids reduce both the thermal resistance and the temperature difference between the heated microchannel wall and the coolant.

  • Through the momentum considerations, added resistance of a ship in regular waves are studied within the framework of the linear potential theory for a ship moving with a constant mean forward speed. In this paper, added resistance in head waves with comparably small wave length is focused by modifying the Marou's method. The strength of the singularities for the Kochin function is modified by considering the diffraction potentials. Slender body theory is used to determine the diffraction potentials as Adachi did. The response of a ship motion is found by using new strip method. For the purpose of comparison with the present method, calculation was also conducted by Marou's and Gerritsma-Beukelman's method. Numerical calculations are performed for five different models, that is, series 60(Cb=0.6, 0.7, 0.8), S7-175 container ship and blunt bow model. Numerical results obtained by the present method show relatively good corelations comparing with experimental results in the region under considerations.

  • In this paper, we propose the mathematical model for the vehicle system including running characteristics. The well defined model for a system is necessary to study and to enhance system performance. To model the dynamic properties of vehicle system, we have considered two fundamental parts. The first part is the motion equations for vehicle based on Newton's second law. The second part is the torque dynamics of the traction motor. These parts are affected by outer conditions such as adhesive coefficient, running resistance and gradient resistance. The each parts are presented by the numerical formula. To test the driving characteristics of the developed model, we performed the simulations by dynamic system simulation software, "SIMULINK" and the results are given for several conditions.

  • Recently, memristor (anion-based memristor) is referred to as the fourth circuit element which resistance state can be gradually changed by the electric pulse signals that have been applied to it. And the stored information in a memristor is non-volatile and also the resistance of a memristor can vary, through intermediate states, between high and low resistance states, by tuning the voltage and current. Therefore the memristor can be applied for analogue memory and/or learning device. Usually, memristive behavior is easily observed in the most transition metal oxide system, and it is explained by electrochemical migration motion of anion with electric field, electron scattering and joule heating. This paper reports the latest trends and issues of anion-based memristor.
