  • This paper argues how Adrienne Kennedy embodies the features of a black woman's self-identity in Funnyhouse of a Negro. An educated young black woman, Sarah lives in a funnyhouse which is surrounded by mirrors. The reflections in the funnyhouse's mirrors are a metaphor of a black woman's life in America. Sarah's narrative is played out by four "selves," differing by sex and race. These selves imply her mixed cultural heritage. Two white women symbolize white European royalty, Jesus expresses christianity which is the basis of western culture and Lumumba represents Africa. Sarah's desire for whiteness is concentrated on skin color and hair. She longs for pallid skin and straight hair of the white race. Sarah wanted to be white, but her "tainted blood" by her black father made that impossible. Sarah is always obsessed by the fear of her father and the unhappy destiny of her mother. Ceaseless knocking, paralyzed images of lifelessness and surreal dreams effectively show her fear. Sarah's selves remain fragmented in the funnyhouse. Sarah exposures the black woman's anger and frustration through her death. Her death is a gesture of denial and refusal of the dominant society. At the same time, it was her last choice and struggle not to completely lose her own identity.

The subjects of this research consisted of 301 female high school students. The data collected were analyzed by multi-regression analysis. The father and mother's behaviors, defined as inconsistency, intrusiveness, physical abuse and neglect, all- resulted in increased levels of loneliness amongst the subjects, and also negatively influenced their perceived competence. However, the parent's monitoring, reasoning and affection behaviors tended to reduced loneliness and perceived lack of competence. The father and mother's affection, when recognized as such by female adolescents, revealed itself to be a positive influence on their various areas of perceived competence. Heater and examined how it affects them to national identity. Followings are the main results of this study. First, after measuring the discrimination experience level of those surveyed, their average was a bit higher than the normal level, showing 2.63(SD=.72), and their acculturation stress was 2.48(SD=.65) which is average. Second, their level of national identity showed 2.16(SD=.57), which was lower than the normal level, and there was statistically a meaningful difference between the groups depending on their academic level, parents' marital status, mother's Korean ability. Third, the factors that affected in national identity were in the order of their discrimination experience(${\beta}$=-.305), parents' marital status(${\beta}$=.286), acculturation stress(${\beta}$=-.225), academic level(${\beta}$=.186), mother's Korean ability(${\beta}$=.173). Based on these results, several ways are suggested to improve national identity of adolescents in multi-cultural family.

  • Purpose: This study was a grounded theory research aimed at generating a substantive theory that accounts for the explanatory social processes in which immigrant Korean single-mother families were engaged in the United States. Methods: In-depth interviews were conducted with 15 immigrant Korean single mothers who were living with children under 18 years of age at the time of the interviews. Data collection guided by theoretical sampling and concurrent constant comparative analysis of the transcribed data was conducted to identify the core social process. Results: The emerged core social process was "living for the children," which represented the driving process by which these women made transition to their new lives as single-mother families. The major task throughout the entire transition was re-creating their families. The women's transition involved practical and psychological transitions. The practical transition involved three stages: assuring family survival, struggling between the father role and the mother role, and stabilizing. The psychological transition involved becoming strong and settling in with a new supportive network. Conclusion: Study results added to the literature by elaborating the women's emphasis on maternal identity and the resilience-provoking nature of the women's transitions.

  • Purpose: This study was to verify the effects of infant massage on weight recovery from physiologic weight loss, physical development of infants, and identity of their mothers. Method: A study with quasi-experimental design with time delay method was conducted from October 20, 2004 through February 20, 2005 with mothers and infants recruited from postpartum care center. 20 infants in the experimental group (once a day massage group) and 22 control group remained for the final analysis. Data were analyzed using SPSS win 11.0 program by frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test and $X^2-test$. Results: There was no significant group difference in weight recovery from physiologic weight loss. However, experiment group showed significant increase in weight and chest circumference in 4 weeks after birth compare to the control group. For changes in behavior, experimental group showed more positive behavioral changes. The mothers who conducted massage for their infants showed higher score of identity as mothers. Conclusion: Since massage applied once a day can be still effective on physical growth of the infants, massage training program for mothers should be developed to apply easily for their infants at home. Further study is suggested to identify influencing factors on performed by mothers and identity as mothers.
