New porous $TiO_2$ nanostructures with shapes of pearl and rice were synthesized by hydrothermal treatment of $TiO_2$-liposome nanocomposites in acid and base solutions, respectively, as identified by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images and large Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface areas. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and selected area electron diffraction proved them to be well-defined anatase crystals. Their UV-visible reflectance absorption spectra were observed to have low band gap energy (3.03 and 3.07 eV, respectively), exhibiting surface absorption band in the visible range from 400 to 600 nm. The degradation of methylene blue (MB) over the $TiO_2$ nanostructures was observed upon visible-light irradiation, which was found to be very efficient as compared with any other conventional visible-light responsive $TiO_2$ nanostructures.
A ferredoxin adsorbed hetero self-assembled layer was fabricated on chemically modified Au substrate, 4-Aminothiophenol (4-ATP) was deposited onto Au substrate and then N-succinimidyl-3-[2-pyridyldithio] propionate (SPDP) was adsorbed on the 4-ATP layer, since SPDP was used as a bridging molecule for ferredoxin adsorption, Ferredoxin/SPDP/4-ATP structured hetero layer was constructed because of strong chemical binding of ferredoxin, SPDP, and 4-ATP, The surface of the ferredoxin-adsorbed SPDP/4-ATP layer was observed by scanning tunneling microscopy, The hetero film formation was verified by surface plasmon resonance measurement. The current flow and rectifying property based on the scanning tunneling spectroscopy I-V characteristics was achieved in the proposed hetero layer. Thus, the hetero layer structure of ferredoxin functioned as a molecular diode with rectifying property, The proposed molecular diode can be usefully applied for the development of molecular scale electronic devices.
Cloning and characterization of the gene encoding a solvent-tolerant protease from the haloalkaliphilic bacterium Geomicrobium sp. EMB2 are described. Primers designed based on the N-terminal amino acid sequence of the purified EMB2 protease helped in the amplification of a 1,505-bp open reading frame that had a coding potential of a 42.7-kDa polypeptide. The deduced EMB2 protein contained a 35.4-kDa mature protein of 311 residues, with a high proportion of acidic amino acid residues. Phylogenetic analysis placed the EMB2 gene close to a known serine protease from Bacillus clausii KSM-K16. Primary sequence analysis indicated a hydrophobic inclination of the protein; and the 3D structure modeling elucidated a relatively higher percentage of small (glycine, alanine, and valine) and borderline (serine and threonine) hydrophobic residues on its surface. The structure analysis also highlighted enrichment of acidic residues at the cost of basic residues. The study indicated that solvent and salt stabilities in Geomicrobium sp. protease may be accorded to different structural features; that is, the presence of a number of small hydrophobic amino acid residues on the surface and a higher content of acidic amino acid residues, respectively.

Nano hybrid superlattices consisting of organic and inorganic components have great potential for creation of new types of functional material by utilizing the wide variety of properties which differ from their constituents. They provide the opportunity for developing new materials with new useful properties. Herein, we fabricated new type of organic-inorganic nano hybrid superlattice thin films by a sequential, self-limiting surface chemistry process known as molecular layer depostion (MLD) combined with atomic layer deposition (ALD). An organic layer was formed at $150^{\circ}C$ using MLD with repeated sequintial adsorption of Hydroquinone and Titanium tetrachloride. A $TiO_2$ inorganic nanolayer was deposited at the same temperature using ALD with alternating surface-saturating reactions of Titanium tetrachloride and water. Using UV-Vis spectroscopy, we confirmed visible light absorption by LMCT. And FTIR spectroscopy and XPS were employed to determine the chemical composition. Ellipsometry and TEM analysis were also used to confirm linear growth of the film versus number of MLD cycles at all same temperature. In addition, p-n junction diodes domonstrated in this study suggest that the film can be suitable for n-type semiconductors.

Morphological evolution of amorphous carbon film is investigated by molecular dynamics simulation. Here, energetic carbon atoms (75 eV) are deposited on the diamond (001) substrate to find effect of incidence angles. At normal and near-normal incidences ($0^{\circ}{\sim}30^{\circ}$) atomically smooth surfaces are observed during their growth. However, rough surfaces emerge and develop into a ripple structure at grazing incidences ($60^{\circ}{\sim}70^{\circ}$). The different growth modes according to the incidence angles can be described by impact-induced displacements of atoms. Downhill transport along any sloped surfaces is predominant for the case of normal incidence. As the incidence angles become grazing, uphill transport is allowed along the surfaces, which have smaller slopes than incidence angle, so the surface features can be amplified. Impact-induced transport and self-shadowing effect can be responsible to the initial growth of seeding structures at a grazing incidence, which would be grown up as tilted columnar structures in further depositions.

Sulfonated poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG-$SO_{3}$) grafted polyrotaxanes (PRx-PEG-$SO_{3}$) were prepared in order to utilize the unique properties of PEG-$SO_{3}$ and the supramolecular structure of PRx, in which PEG-$SO_{3}$ grafted $\alpha$-cyclodextrins ($\alpha$-CDs) were threaded onto PEG segments in a PEG-b-poly(propylene glycol) (PPG)-b-PEG triblock copolymer (Pluronic) chain capped with bulky end groups. Some of the PRx-PEG-$SO_{3}$ demonstrated a higher anticoagulant activity in case of PRx-PEG-$SO_{3}$ (P 105), and compared with the control they showed a lower fibrinogen adsorption in PRx-PEG-$SO_{3}$ (F68) and a higher binding affinity with fibroblast growth factor. The obtained results suggested that polyrotaxane incorporated with PEG-$SO_{3}$ may be applicable to the surface modification of clinically used polymers, especially for blood/cell compatible medical devices.
Various bupivacaine-loaded microspheres were prepared using poly(d,1-lactide) (PLA) and poly(d,1-lactic-co-glycolide) (PLGA) by a solvent evaporation method for the sustained release of drug. The effects of process conditions such as drug loading, polymer type and solvent type on the characteristics of microspheres were investigated. The prepared microspheres were characterized for their drug loading, size distribution, surface morphology and release kinetics. Drug loading efficiency and yield of PLGA micro- spheres were higher than those of PLA microspheres. The prepared microspheres had an average particle size below 5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The particle size range of microspheres was 1.65~2.24${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. As a result of SEM, the particle size of PLA microspheres was smaller than that of PLGA microspheres. In morphology studies, microspheres showed a spherical shape and smooth surface in all process conditions. In thermal analysis, bupivacaine-loaded microspheres showed no peaks originating from bupivacaine. This suggested that bupivacaine base was molecular-dispersed in the polymer matrix of microspheres. The release pattern of the drug from microspheres was evaluated for 96 hours. The initial burst release of bupivacaine base decreased with increasing the molecular weight of PLGA, and the drug from microspheres released slowly. In conclusion, bupivacaine-loaded microspheres were successfully prepared from poly(d,1-lactide) and poly (d,1- lactic-co-glycolide) polymers with different molecular weights allowing control of the release rate.
The relationship between morphological differentiation and production of trypsin-like protease (TLP_ in streptomycetes was studied. All the Streptomyces spp.In this study produced TLP just before the onset of aerial mycelium formation. Addition of TLP inhibitor, TLCK, to the top surface of colonies inhibited aerial mycelium formation as well as TLP inhibitor, TLCK, to the top surface of colonies inhibited aerial mycelium formation as well as TLP activity. Addition of 2% glucose to the Bennett agar medium repressed both the aerial mycelium formation and TLP production in S. abuvaviensis, S. coelicolor A3(2), S exfoliatus, S. microflavus, S. roseus, s. lavendulae, and S. rochei. However the addition of glucose did not affect S. limosus, S. felleus, S. griseus, S. phaechromogenes, and S. rimosus. The glucose repression on aerial mycelium formation and production of TLP was relieved by the addition of glucose anti-metabolite (methyl .alpha.-glucopyranoside). Therefore, it was concluded that TLP production is coordinately regulated with morphological differentiation and TLP activity is essential for morphological differentiation in streptomycetes. The proposed role of TLP is that TLP participates in the degradation of substrate mycelium protein for providing nutrient for aerial mycelial growth.
Indium aluminum arsenide(InAlAs) was grown by molecular beam epitaxy on (001) indium phosphide (InP) substrate and the effects of growth temperature on the properties of epitaxial layers were studied. In the temperature range of 370-$400 ^{\circ}C$, we observed that the surface morphology, optical quality and structural quality of InAlAs epilayers were improved as growth temperature increased. However, the InAlAs epilavers grown at $430 ^{\circ}C$ have the bad surface morphology and show the same trends as structural and epical quality. As a result of these measurements, it is suggested that the InAlAs epilayers of very good properties can be grown at $400 ^{\circ}C$.
This paper presents a numerical analysis of the lubrication characteristics of condensed water molecules on a solid surface by conducting molecular dynamics simulations. We examine two models consisting of a simple hexahedral substrate with and without water molecules to reveal the lubrication mechanism of mono-layered water molecules. We perform a sliding simulation by contacting and translating a single asperity on the substrate under various normal loads. During the simulation, we measure the friction coefficient and atomic stress. When water molecules were interleaved between solid surfaces, atomic stress exerted on individual atom and friction coefficient were smaller than those of model without water molecule. Particularly, at a low load, the efficacy of water molecules in the reduction of atomic stress and friction is remarkable. Conversely, at high loads, water molecules rarely lubricate solid surfaces and fail to effectively distribute the contact stress. We found a critical condition in which the lubrication regime changes and beyond the condition, significant plastic deformation was created. Consequently, we deduce that water molecules can distribute and reduce contact stress within a certain condition. The reduced contact stress prevents plastic deformation of the substrate and thus diminishes the mechanical interlocking between the asperity and the substrate.
