  • The goal of this paper is to set the research and development (R&D) strategic plan of Honam Sea Grant (HSG) program which is to secure the base technologies for the success of Jeollanamdo's policy projects in the area of maritime and fisheries. HSG's mission is to support science-based sustainable management, conservation and enhancement of Honam coastal and aquatic resources through research, extension and education. Firstly, 80 cases of Jeollanam-do's policy project and 48 cases of HSG's R&D project are compiled and classified into the five areas of maritime and fisheries. Secondly, typical key words are extracted from each five areas and assessed the inherent meanings of each key words using quarterly segmented meaning allocation techniques with 'intended for practical use', 'intended for theoretical use', 'intended for future', and 'intended for current'. Then, we proposed R&D strategic plan based on the evaluation results and, it's practical use is also discussed.

  • The coastal area of Republic of Korea is very clean compared to other countries. In this reason, west coastal area of our country is a good place for breeding up a fish such as shrimp. In winter season, the heating system is required for preventing shrimp death caused by freezing in the farm. The heater in the heating system for fishery's farm is operated very severe combating corrosion due to high accumulation by feeding material and high temperature in heated sea water. Almost all manufactured heaters of STS 316L and Ti material are scrapped every year due to heavy corrosion such a general and crevice corrosion. For comparing the general and galvanic corrosion in new heater material, the test material of Zirconium (Zr), Titanium (Ti) and STS 316L are tested by potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), current density-time methods and microscopic examination in a 3.5% NaCl solution. The corrosion potential (Ecor) measured by potentiodynamic polarization for Zr, Ti and STS 316L reveals -198, -250 and -450mV, corrosion current density 0.5, 2.5 and $6.5{\mu}A/cm^2$ respectively. The film resistance measured by EIS are Zr 63,000, Ti 39,700 and 316L $3,150{\Omega}$, and the current of Zr-Ti couple is $0.03{\mu}A$, whereas Zr-316L SS is $0.1{\mu}A$. According to the result of this experiment in 3.5% NaCl solution, Zr is excellent corrosion resistance material than Ti and STS 316L.

  • Applicability of the MIKE21 model as a real time coupled tide-surge model had been examined at the previous study. In this study, another applicability of the model as an inundation model is also examined. Prior to real cases, effect of artificial structures on the inundation is analyzed. The results show that inundation depth is not altered, while inundation area is lessened as a result of decreased inundation speed. Comparative study between the coupled model and an uncoupled storm surge model is also carried out at the Masan coastal zone, which shows the coupled model is considered to be plausible at the time to maximum inundation, while both models show similar results at the inundation area and inundation depth.

  • MIKE21, a commercial hydrodynamic model, was applied at the Masan Bay to evaluate the model's applicability of simulating the inundation phenomena. A storm surge/inundation model which adopts overflow computation scheme was applied together for comparison. The results of both models show correspondence with not only observed inundation area but also inundation water depth to prove their ability as inundation models. Especially, the accuracy of the MIKE21 model, which just adopts wetting/drying scheme, does not seem to be behind the inundation model. Moreover, an inundation simulation of the virtual MAEMI which was generated at preceding study, was conducted. The inundation area of the virtual MAEMI is similar to that of the real MAEMI, but inundation water depth is deeper than the real MAEMI.

  • This study was conducted to find out the effects of relationship between ocean conditions and snowfall when cold and dry continental air mass passes through the West Sea of Korea. Route of continental high atmospheric pressure can cause effect on snowfall at the west regions (Inchoen, Gunsan, Mokpo) of the Korean Peninsula. The continental high atmospheric pressure extend from the southern China to western coastal region of the Korean Peninsula during the December, and it extend from the north side of China through Bohai Sea and Yodong Peninsula to central area of the Korean Peninsula during the February. Therefore, more snowfall recorded in Incheon is higher during Feb. than Dec.. whereas Gunsan and Mokpo is the opposite. The heavy snowfall at the western coastal region of Korea was caused by loss of the heat from the ocean to air when it's higher than $100W/m^2$. the heavy snowfall was also observed when the arrangement of continental high atmospheric pressure and low pressure was high at the West and low at the East, which formed a front in West and when the wind blow from the North or North West at the speed of $4\sim8m/sec$. There were not much relation between salinity in the western sea and snowfall in the western coastal region of Korea.

  • Background: The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between soil environmental factors and halophyte distribution in the west coast of South Korea. Soils of our study sites were categorized into two groups: salt marsh and estuary marsh. Results: Salinity was higher in the salt marsh group than that in the estuary marsh group. However, total nitrogen, silt, and clay contents were higher in the estuary marsh group than those in the salt marsh group. Although altitude had a wider range in the salt marsh group, the mean altitude was higher in the estuary marsh group than that in the salt marsh group. Annual halophytes of seed propagation species were distributed parallel to the coast line on salt marsh. Higher coverage of vegetation was found in the area closer to the coast line. Plant density was higher near dead parental plants in estuary marsh, showing less difference in area that was more distant from the coast line. Conclusions: Results of canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) for vegetation distribution and sediment environmental factors and germination analysis in the coast line showed significant relationship with halophyte distribution. Therefore, they can be used as an indicator of coastal plant movement due to sea level rise.

  • The present study evaluated the blocking effect of natural and artificial topography on sunshine duration in the southern coastal area of Haui-do. The geospatial data for the target area was constructed by geographic information system(GIS) data. Three-dimensional modeling based on solar azimuth and altitude angles was conducted for the assessment of sunshine environment. The sunshine area was evaluated over 80~90% of the target area in the daytime, especially in summer. The blocking effect of mountainous terrain on sunshine duration was presented at the northern residential area in the late afternoon. There was also the effect of artificial topography by construction of fill-up bank on sunshine environment at the southern residential area early in the morning and the south-western part of salt field in the late afternoon.

  • Many countries foster the tour and leisure industries as a national strategic industry of the 21st century. The tour and leisure industry is expected to be reorganized from the land-based industry to the ocean-based industry as the GNP in a nation is over USD $20,000{\sim}30,000$ dollars. In Korea, since we adopt a five-day week, the total working hours for a week is shortened. As the result, leisure activities in family, such as experience tour, ecological tour, travel, and overnight tour, are expected to be increased. Leisure and sports tours, which link the tour and sports to rafting, hang gliding, and marine leisure, have been also increased over 21.6%. A number of small and big islands near Ho-Nam coastal areas play an important role as natural breakwater. Thus, the ports in Ho-Nam area is safely protected from physical effects by ocean waves and is maintained without constructing a breakwater. In this paper, we analyses the required conditions as the marine leisure base in the southwest sea area which has the natural advantages for marine leisure. We also discuss how to activate the yacht business on Ho-Nam coast area. And then we analyse the present situations and obstacles of a domestic marine leisure. We also suggest the plan to build up echo-marine leisure infrastructure for industrial growth of marine leisure in Ho-Nam area.

  • In this study, shallow-water design waves are calculated for the return period of 10, 20, 30, and 50 years, based on the extreme value analysis of the wave measurement data at Gangneung beach. These values are compared with the results of SWAN simulation with the boundary condition of the deep-water design waves of the corresponding return periods at the Gangneung sea area provided by the Fisheries Agency (FA, 1988) and Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute (KORDI, 2005). It is found that the shallow-water wave heights at Gangneung beach calculated by the deep-water design waves were significantly less than the observation data. As the return period becomes higher, the significant wave heights obtained by the extreme value analysis becomes higher than those computed by SWAN with the deep-water design waves of the corresponding return periods. KORDI computed the hindcast wave data from January 2004 to August 2008 by WAM with a finer-grid mesh system than those of previous studies. Comparisons of the wave hindcast results with the wave observation show that the reproducibility of the winter-season storm wave was considerably improved compared to the hindcast data from 1979 to 2003. Hereafter, it is necessary to carry out hindcast wave data for the years before 2004 using WAM with the finer-grid mesh system and to supplement the deep-water design wave.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the vegetation structure and ecological characteristics of the coastal forest Pinus thunbergii community in Busan Metropolitan City (BMC) and to establish reference information for the management of the coastal forest in BMC in the future. We set up 97 plots with an area of $100m^2$ each for the analysis and investigation of the vegetation characteristics. The analysis using the TWINSPAN and DCA techniques found seven community groups: Pinus thunbergii-Quercus aliena community, Pinus thunbergii-Eurya japonica(1) community, Pinus thunbergii-Eurya japonica(2) community, Pinus thunbergii-Quercus serrata community, Pinus thunbergii-Camellia japonica(1) community, Pinus thunbergii-Camellia japonica(2) community, and Pinus thunbergii-Eurya japonica-Camellia japonica community. According to the analysis of vegetation structure, Pinus thunbergii was a main dominant species at the canopy layer in all sites while Eurya japonica and Camellia japonica were dominant species at the understory layer. Pinus thunbergii-Quercus serrata community is predicted in the forest succession because of the competition between Pinus thunbergii and Quercus serrata in the canopy layer and the understory layer. As such, it is necessary to observe changes by continually monitoring this community. Tree species with strong salinity tolerance, including Pinus thunbergii, have formed community groups because of the environmental characteristics of coastal forests, strong with salinity tolerance species are forming community groups. Therefore, all community groups except for the Pinus thunbergii-Quercus serrata community will maintain the current vegetation structure unless drastic environmental changes occur.
