Benzyl Alcohol Oxidation over H5PMo10V2O40 Catalyst Chemically Immobilized on Sulfur-containing Mesoporous Carbon (황이 포함된 중형기공성 탄소에 화학적으로 고정화된 H5PMo10V2O40 촉매 상에서 Benzyl Alcohol 산화반응)

  • $H_5PMo_{10}V_2O_{40}$ ($PMo_{10}V_2$) catalyst chemically immobilized on sulfur-containing mesoporous carbon (S-MC) was prepared, and it was applied to the benzyl alcohol oxidation reaction. S-MC was synthesized by a templating method using SBA-15 and p-toluenesulfonic acid as a templating agent and a carbon precursor, respectively. S-MC was then modified to have a positive charge, and thus, to provide sites for the immobilization of $PMo_{10}V_2$. By taking advantage of the overall negative charge of $[PMo_{10}V_2O4_{40}]^{5-}$, $PMo_{10}V_2$ catalyst was immobilized on the S-MC support as a charge matching component. It was revealed that $PMo_{10}V_2$ species were finely and molecularly dispersed on the S-MC via chemical immobilization. In the vapor-phase oxidation of benzyl alcohol, $PMo_{10}V_2$/S-MC catalyst showed higher conversion of benzyl alcohol and higher yield for benzaldehyde and benzoic acid than unsupported $PMo_{10}V_2$ catalyst. The enhanced catalytic performance of $PMo_{10}V_2$/S-MC was due to fine dispersion of $PMo_{10}V_2$ species on the S-MC via chemical immobilization.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the residue amount of harmful materials on the 113 commercial fruit teas (Gugija, Omija, Sansuyu) in Gwangju area. It was performed using the GC-ECD, GC-NPD, GC-MSD and the LC-UVD, LC-FLD, LC-MSD to analyze 200 pesticides. The heavy metals were determined using a Mercury analyzer and AAS. The sulfur dioxides were analyzed by modified Monnier-Williams method. The residual pesticides were detected in 4 samples (Gugija). The mean values of heavy metal contents (mg/kg) were Pb, 0.024; Cd, 0.031; As, 0.010; Hg, 0.003. The measured values of Pb, Cd, As, Hg showed within MRLs. The sulfur dioxides were over MRLs in 4 samples (Gugija). These results will be used to establish on the regulation of commercial fruit teas in Gwangju area.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the residue amount of harmful materials on the 153 commercial medical herbs in Gwangju area. It was performed using the GC-ECD, GC-NPD, GC-MSD and the LC-UVD, LC-FLD, LC-MSD to analyze 200 pesticides. The heavy metals were determined using a Mercury analyzer and AAS. The sulfur dioxides were analyzed by modified Monnier-Williams method. The residual pesticides were detected in 7 samples, and were over MRLs (Maximum Risk Levels) in 2 samples (1.3%). The mean values of heavy metal contents (mg/kg) were Pb, 0.570; Cd, 0.081; As, 0.082; Hg, 0.0093. The measured values of Pb, As, Hg showed within MRLs. The excess samples of MRLs were 3 samples (changchul 2, cheongung 1) on Cd. The sulfur dioxides were over MRLs in 7 samples (4.6%), hwanggi and gugija. These results will be used to establish on the regulation of commercial medical herbs in Gwangju area.

H2S tolerance effects of Ce0.8Sm0.2O2-δ modification on Sr0.92Y0.08Ti1-xNixO3-δ anode in solid oxide fuel cells

  • $Sr_{0.92}Y_{0.08}Ti_{1-x}Ni_xO_{3-{\delta}}$ (SYTN) was investigated in the presence of $H_2S$ containing fuels to assess the feasibility of employing oxide materials as alternative anodes. Aliovalent substitution of $Ni^{2+}$ into $Ti^{4+}$ increased the ionic conductivity of perovskite, leading to improved electrochemical performance of the SYTN anode. The maximum power densities were 32.4 and $45.3mW/cm^2$ in $H_2$ at $900^{\circ}C$ for the SYT anode and the SYTN anode, respectively. However, the maximum power densities in 300 ppm of $H_2S$ decreased by 7% and by 46% in the SYT and the SYTN anodes, respectively. To enhance the sulfur tolerance and to improve the electrochemical properties, the surface of SYTN anode was modified with samarium doped ceria (SDC) using the sol-gel coating method. For the SDC-modified SYTN anode, the cell performance was mostly recovered in the pure $H_2$ condition after 500-ppm $H_2S$ exposure in contrast to the irreversible cell performance degradation exhibited in the unmodified SYTN anode.

  • To compare the content of natural existence with artificial addition experimental subject of 152 cases(25 kinds) were classified by two category of 42 fresh samples(14 kinds) and 110 processed samples(23 kinds). The content of sulfur dioxide were determined by Monnier-Williams's modified method. In mean content of 42 non-processed samples studied the range of contents was between 0.00 and 9.46 mg/kg. Radish contained the highest amount of sulfur dioxide(8.97 mg/kg), followed by onion(8.04 mg/kg). In mean content of 110 processed samples studied, the range of content was between 0.00 and 1,828.59 mg/kg. Gourd contained the highest amount of sulfur dioxide(1,064.61 mg/kg), followed by apricot(869.62 mg/kg), dried persimmon(64.11 mg/kg), dried radish(29.00 mg/kg), dried pumpkin(17.63 mg/kg), and those were lowe. than criteria. To supply safe food for the citizens, the quantitative level is required to be reinforced to supply safe foot continuously.

  • In this work, we investigated the variation of physical and chemical characteristics of solvent-insolubles and solvent-solubles in Canada's Athabasca oil sands by solvent-insolubles experiments. N-Heptane, n-Hexane, and n-Pentane were tested for solvents and asphaltenes were separated from maltenes by using a modified ASTM D 3279 method. Elemental analysis, boiling point distribution (SIMDIS), molecular weight distribution, heavy metal contents, API gravity, viscosity and SARA fractions were measured for thorough samples. The asphaltenes-removed maltenes contained less sulfur and heavy metal amounts and had lower molecular weight than the original bitumen. N-Pentane solvent could lower sulfur and heavy metal amounts, molecular weight, and viscosity of maltenes compared to the other solvents. Eventually, we confirmed that the obtained experimental data could be used as basic informations of bitumen upgrading processes for the production of SCO (synthetic crude oil).

  • Cordierite has a very low thermal expansion coefficient, but has problem that it has a weak mechanical strength and is apt to be attacked by acid such as sulfur for using as a diesel particulate filter support. The physical properties of $ZrTiO_4$ modified with $SiO_2,\;Al_2O_3$, MoOx, $Cr_2O_3\;and\;Nb_2O_5$ were investigated with XRD, SEM, UTM and thermal expansion, etc. in this paper. $ZrTiO_4$ powder was synthesized as a monoclinic structure with processes that starting materials of $TiO_2\;and\;ZrO_2$ were mixed with ball mill and calcined above $1240^{\circ}C$ for 3 hr. Additive modified $ZrTiO_4$ specimens for flexural strength and thermal expansion measurement were obtained by mixing $ZrTiO_4$ powder with additives, pressing and firing at $1300^{\circ}C$ for 3 hr. The porosity of additive modified $ZrTiO_4$ decreased monotonically with increasing additive content by 5 wt% regardless of additive types and saturated for further increase of additive by 10wt. The flexural strength of $Al_2O_3$ (5, 10 wt%) modified $ZrTiO_4$ shows a large increase, but that of other additives modified $ZrTiO_4$ decreased. The thermal expansion coefficient of additive modified $ZrTiO_4$ except $Nb_2O_5$ decreased continuously with the content of additive. In particular, the lowest thermal expansion coefficient of $ZrTiO_4$ was obtained for the additive of $SiO_2$.

MBE growth and magnetic properties of epitaxial FeMn2O4 film on MgO(100)

  • FeM2X4 spinel structures, where M is a transition metal and X is oxygen or sulfur, are candidate materials for spin filters, one of the key devices in spintronics. Both the Fe and M ions can occupy tetrahedral and octahedral sites; therefore, these types of compounds can display various physical and chemical properties [1]. On the other hand, the electronic and magnetic properties of these spinel structures could be modified via the control of cation distribution [2, 3]. Among the spinel oxides, iron manganese oxide is one of promising materials for applications. FeMn2O4 shows inverse spinel structure above 390 K and ferrimagnetic properties below the temperature [4]. In this work, we report on the structural and magnetic properties of epitaxial FeMn2O4 thin film on MgO(100) substrate. The reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) results indicated that films were epitaxially grown on MgO(100) without the impurity phases. The valance states of Fe and Mn in the FeMn2O4 film were carried out using x-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS). The magnetic properties were measured by vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), indicating that the samples are ferromagnetic at room temperature. The structural detail and origin of magnetic ordering in FeMn2O4 will be discussed.

Improvement of hot work environment in the curing processes of a tire manufacturing company (타이어 제조공장 가류공정의 온열환경 개선에 관한 연구)

  • Generally, the tire curing process is the process in which the sulfur is added and subsequently the tire is heated to give the tire elasticity. In this process, all kinds of the chemicals in the tire are emitted with a lot of heat. The chemical fume and heat aggravate the work environment. To solve this problem, 92 local exhaust ventilators and 8 gravity ventilators were used, but not satisfactory yet. Preliminary survey showed that the temperatures in the process were very high: 30.3, 32.9 and $37.2^{\circ}C$ at 2, 4 and 6m above the ground level, respectively in the winter (outside temperature was $2^{\circ}C$). It can be imagined that the process is severely hot in the summer time. The higher temperature distribution in the higher space tells us that the hot plume could not be removed with the existing ventilation systems. Therefore, in this study, some alternative ventilation systems were designed. The partitions were used to contain the hot plume to increase the capture efficiency. The gravity ventilators were newly designed to improve the extraction efficiency of hot fume. To satisfy the balance of pressure in the curing process, some supply air system was introduced by renewing the existing air conditioning system. Many alternative solutions were evaluated by using computational fluid dynamics modelling. The best and applicable solution was selected and the existing ventilation system was modified. After implementing the new ventilation system, the hot environment was much improved. The temperature reduction in the curing process was about $6.4^{\circ}C$.

Chemical Modification and Feedback Inhibition of Arabidopsis thaliana Acetolactate Synthase (아라비돕시스 탈리아나 Acetolactate Synthase의 화학적 변형과 되먹임 방해)

  • Acetolactate synthase (ALS) was partially purified from Escherichia coli MF2000/pTATX containing Arabidopsis thaliana ALS gene. The partially purified ALS was examined for its sensitivity toward various modifying reagents such as iodoacetic acid, iodoacetamide, N-ethylmaleimide (NEM), 5,5'-dithiobis(2-nitrobenzoic acid) (DTNB), p-chloromercuribenzoic acid (PCMB), and phenylglyoxal. It was found that PCMB inhibited the enzyme activity most strongly followed by DTNB and NEM. Since iodoacetic acid did not compete with substrate pyruvate, it appeared that cysteine is not involved in the substrate binding site. On the other hand, the substrate protected the enzyme partly from inactivation by phenylglyoxal, which might indicate interaction of arginine residue with the substrate. The partially purified enzyme was inhibited by end products, valine and isoleucine, but not by leucine. However, the ALS modified with PCMB led to potentiate the feedback inhibition of all end products. Additionally, derivatives of pyrimidyl sulfur benzoate, a candidate for a new herbicide for ALS, were examined for their inhibitory effects.
