  • This study was carried out to investigate the liquefaction behaviour and predict deviator stress with matric suction, of unsaturated silty sand. The unsaturated soil tests were conducted using a modified triaxial cell and specimens were prepared using the moisture tamping method. The axis translation technique was used to create the desired matric suctions in the specimen. Undrained triaxial compression tests were carried out at matric suction of 0, 2, 5, 10 and 25 kPa. The specimens were sheared to axial strains of about 20% to obtain steady state conditions. The results showed that liquefaction of silty sand only occurs at matric suction of 0 kPa and 2 kPa. The results also show that at matric suctions of 5, 10 and 25 kPa, the resistance to liquefaction increases. As the suction increases, the undrained effective stress path approached the drained stress path. Also, the predicted and measured maximum deviator stress for unsaturated soils using the effective stress concept showed good agreement as matric suction increases. The deviator stress increase is nonlinear as matric suction increases.

  • In the study, dynamic behavior of laminated orthotropic beams on elastic foundation is investigated. Consistent model presented here combines the finite element solution of the system with SAP2000 software and the calculation of soil parameters with MATLAB software using Modified Vlasov Model type elastic foundation. For this purpose, a computing tool is coded in MATLAB which employs Open Application Programming Interface (OAPI) feature of SAP2000 to provide two-way data flow during execution. Firstly, an example is taken from the literature to demonstrate the accuracy of the consistent FEM-Vlasov Model. Subsequently, the effects of boundary conditions, subsoil depth, elasticity modulus of subsoil, slenderness ratio, velocity of moving load and lamination scheme on the behavior of laminated orthotropic beams on elastic foundation are investigated on a new numerical example. It can be concluded that it is really convenient to use OAPI feature of SAP2000 to model this complex behavior of laminated orthotropic beams on elastic foundation under moving load.

  • A menu-driven shell program DSFS (Daily Streamflow Simulation Model), that can process the input data, optimize the parameters, execute the program, and graphically display the results of a modified tank model, was developed and applied to simulating daily streamflow from small watersheds. The model defines daily watershed evapotranspiration losses from potential values multiplied by monthly landuse coefficients and correction factors for soil water storage levels. The parameters were calibrated using observed hydrologic data for fifteen watersheds, and the results were correlated with watershed parameters to define empirical relationships. The proposed model was tested with streamflow data of ungaged conditions, and the simulation results overestimated the annual runoff.

  • More time is required for consolidating soft clay when its hydraulic conductivity around the vertical drains is reduced by soil disturbance. One of the methods to be proposed to solve such problem is the electro-osmotic flow application. This study presents the experimental results of model tests using a modified oedometer and a large-scale cylinder with a sand drain. Results show that the development of negative excessive pore water pressure due to the DC electrical field in saturated clay can be transformed to additional loads causing more consolidation settlement.

  • Risk Assessment is an important area in toxicology and the methodology for risk assessment has been developed. Mathematical models used for risk assessment include one-hit multi-hit, two-stage, probit logistic, multistage, and linearized multistage models. For the assessment of exposure dose, environmental monitoring has been applied, but it has limitation to accurately assess exposure level because the levels in the air, water, foods, and soil may vary depending on time of sampling. In addition, humans can be exposed to various sources of exposure and thus it will be impossible to estimate the total level of exposure in humans by environmental monitoring. To eliminate the limitation of environmental monitoring, a direct measurement of toxic materials or modified biomolecules (called biomarkers) associated with the exposure of toxic materials is needed. Here, scientific basis of biomarkers and future direction have been considered for the assessment of carcinogen exposure and cancer risk in humans.

  • The character of a recombinant bioluminescent bacteria's light emission enables us to monitor toxicity in water, soil and air. In this study, various bioluminescent responses to water samples containing toxic chemicals, such as phenol and mitomycin C, were obtained and analysed through the use of a multi-channel two-stage minibioreactor system. The bioluminescent pattern from each channel can be used as a standard for identifying the degree of toxicity in field samples. When various concentrations of toxic chemicals were injected in a step manner, different bioluminescent patterns were obtained. Also this system showed variation in its bioluminescent pattern as the injection manner was changed, i.e. using a modified version of the bell-curve type injection. In conclusion, the toxicity was shown to be related with the bioluminescent response when using these standard bioluminescent patterns. Comparing this standard with a bioluminescent response from a field sample, we can estimate the degree of which the sample is toxic.

  • This paper presents a case history of a deep open cut excavation of Nakagawa section for Futuoka Subway construction which adopted observational mettled against boiling failure and completed with success by modifying construction based upon field monitoring. One of the difficult conditions for the excavation was sandy layer with high water pressure which was anticipated boiling failure. The boiling was generally considered as one of the difficult phenomena to work with the observational method because of its unpredictable catastrophic nature. Laboratory experiments showed the existence of the prefailure movements of the ground and the possibility of the application of the observational method against the boiling failure. Construction step was planned to be modified, if necessary, based upon field monitoring and was completed with success.

  • In order to treat flow problems for an unsaturated soils, it is required the mediation of the coefficient of permeability with variation of suction. The coefficient of permeability for soils can be determined by the direct or indirect methods. The direct methods of permeability can be performed either in the laboratory or in the field. The indirect methods can be predicted from the soil-water characteristics curve. Laboratory test methods to measure the coefficient of permeability can be categorized into two types, steady-state and unsteady-state. In this study, the coefficient of permeability for unsaturated soils was determined by the modified apparatus for steady state-method(Klute, 1972) and was predicted from the equations of Brooks and Corey(1964) and Van Genuchten(1980). Experimental results were compared with predicted coefficient of permeability and verified applicability of the two equations.

  • In Korea, due to its broad efficacy as a systemic insecticide, imidacloprid has been widely used in rice paddies to control sucking insects, soil insects, and some chewing insects and in apple orchards to control various insects pests. To quantify the imidacloprid residue concentrations, samples are assayed in vitro using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays(ELISA). These assays generally require several hours to perform. As a biosensor, a competitive imidacloprid ELISA was modified to measure insecticide concentrations. It was found that a total assay time of 15 min(10-min antibody-antigen binding, and 5-min substrate development) is sufficient for monitoring imidacloprid concentrations. Further work is needed to improve the sensitivity of the measurement protocol.

  • The objective of this paper is to analyze the environmental effects by the fertilizer change with wastewater reuse for agriculture. For this research, Lysimeter tests are being implemented to cultivate rice with different levels of fertilizer applications with wastewater irrigation., and to analyze the nutrient loading by wastwater reuse in paddy fields was examined the CREAMS-PADDY model. CREAMS-PADDY model is modified from CREAMS model for considering the hydrologic cycles in paddy field. As a result, in the lysimeter treated by irrigation with wastewater and chemical fertilizer with half of the conventional amount showed generally similar tendency to the control plot. This may require the modifications of standard cultural practices for rice in terms of fertilizer and pesticide applications. However, high concentration of sodium in wastewater might cause damage to physico-chemical properties of paddy soil. And the wastewater reuse effects on nutrient loads were quantitatively analyzed and this results provide the reasonable management for agricultural reuse.
