Inlay is a high technique of inlaying patterns on the surface of crafts and widely used transcending time and place at various hand crafting area. Inscribed pattern technique using rare materials in the area have been used by the artisans of artistic flair and functionality and its value is also highly regarded from ancient to modern and inherits and is being developed today. Existing inlay technique, however, has not been spread out because it needs craftsman's skill based on the handcraft and inscribed materials are very rare to use. This paper aims to replace natural wood Sanggam materials for traditional furniture patterns such as Samho Jang, Ohho Jang, Seongtoenoe Moon, Gyeopgwinoe Moon and wood inlay text like Soo (Long life), Bok (Luck), Kang (Peace), Ryoung (Relaxed) and gammadion cross pattern. Gathered black, yellow and white color dyed wood using power tools can replace rare natural inlay materials through reliable and standardized supply. Dyed-gathered inlay materials can easily replace wood inlay materials, therefore, attempt to create an improved direction regarding materials and fabrication techniques in order to make traditional or contemporary artistic furniture to be produced.

The bent wood technique has been used for making the bow, the musical instruments and the wagon wheel, The Winsor chair of England in 1730's was the first Lfurniture product by using this method. This method was spread out by Michael Thonet in Austria after the Industrial Evolution. Early making technique of Winsor chair was relatively easy, but Michael Thonet's bent chair was mass produced by the machine and launched the revolution in the industrial furniture. 20th-Century European furniture designers applied the method of layering and forming plywood to bent chairs, enhanced the function and conformability. The bent chair had a big impact on modern chair design. The bent chair has the formative beauty and convenience from the character of softness and colors of wooden materials and has been developed variously by furniture designers. This study is a new approach to use Dyed-Gathered Wood with various colors and patterns as a material of the bend wood. First, bent wood with the Dyed-Gathered Wood enhances a close texture of wooden material textures instead of coating the surface. Second, flexibility of the bent wood with the Dyed-Gathered Wood enables wood bending techniques. Lastly, the Dyed-Gathered Wood is made with relatively cheap woods, replaces expensive imported woods which cause product price rise. This method enables a material cost saving and a stable supply of material.

In the process of changing from modern society to contemporary society, innovation of various fields is considered as important with rapid social change and one of the consequences of this changing movement is the innovation of living space. In this paper, based on this motive, we will study a modular shelf that can create a private space, and serve function like role of partition that delimits space in the one-room. Modular shelves can provide openness, closeness, and autonomy to individual spaces in a one-room space without space divisions. In a small one-room for residential purpose, it is able to function effectively to show the atmosphere of personal space and display small items reflecting personal taste in addition to the function of storing books and items. In addition, a modular shelves considering disassembly and movement are proposed in order to take advantage of one-room that can make different space configurations as needed. It is aim to suggest a basic modular shelves structure that used traditional Chinese wood-joints during which techniques was sturdy while reducing the use of timber. Futhermore, the purpose of this study is to study the design of shelf furniture that can add individuality.

The purpose of this study is to identify characteristic of Swedish craft and modern design in especially furniture and interior design through the philosophy and humanitarian functionalism of Svenskt Tenn. The study completed through researching what the design paradigm of architecture and furniture design in those days was, and theoretically analyzing how this unique brand became a leading modern Swedish style in the European stream of functionalism design. Working upon this research, the study concludes the concept of the humanitarian functionalism design what Firma Svenskt Tenn wanted to realize through analyzing the aspects of form and material of Josef Frank' works who mainly contributed to form the Svenskt Tenn's unique design identity and comparing them to the other design examples of those days. The result are as follows: 1) Organic composition of space and elements, styles and functions, 2) Unique space composition of amalgamation, 3) Open space with abstract patterns, 4) Furniture shapes of displaying space environment, 5) Overcoming the limits of pragmatic functionalism based on rationalism.

A Study on the Characteristics of the Modern Chair Design The features of the modern chair design results from the diverse life style unfolded as per the 20th century social structure and the change of the residential space, and new design has been being developed by the scientists and the artists in various fields through their cooperated work in a way. The field of the scientific or technical study and creation of arts can be developed where they can evoke the sympathy in the circumstances under which the various styles of both arts and science meet across, complement crash together, and grow up. The operation which can control in the network of such pluralistic sphere has been needed for a long period and it has been facing the needs from a time and society. The engineering furniture as the counterplan of the above has brought the value of materials into relief to the forms of human life by making the properties of matter the maximum value or changing it. It can be summarized as following characteristics in its materials and forms along as well as the 3 types (handycrafty, mechanical, and ecological expression) in process through the 20th century. 1. Characteristics in Materials elasticity of the chair as per the changes of the flexibility in the steel pipe development of systematic chair using the plasticity of the plywood, plastic, and wire lightweight due to the materials such as aluminum. 2. Formative characteristics formative simplicity for the increase of the function and the quality improvement such as sociality, productivity, environmental and aesthetic nature emphasis on the structure as per the architectural environment and tecniques pursuit of the forms as a container of the human body seeking for the formative values as the cultural symbols coping with the needs from thepluralistic social structure Furniture is not the makeup for convenience sake but most importantexpression as necessaries of our environments. It should identify itself always as per these kind of needs and also it should be able to used to keep the relation of such mutual division, otherwise the purchase of new furniture should be necessary according to every change of the existing situatiov. Our residence doesn't need the specific style but expresses only the properties of the dwellers.

Recent tendency in modern society for urban design and public space forming it recommended diversity of studies and design development, for the interest in urban design is increasing. In particular, street furniture being one of the important components to construct public space has been researched and developed in aspects of formative and emotional style, broken from the old way of the function-oriented purpose. It could be said that this results from the desire of human pursuing a well-off life, the new value standard regarding design and the life styles in mode. The new development of street furniture could be a creating the value-added source potentially being able to raise community, identity of nation and international competitiveness, beyond the primary purpose, namely the improvement of surrounding environment, and therefore the most of countries in the world are concentrating their life and death on development of design in reality. For this investigation the concept of city design, the basic content analysis of the street furniture and also the contents in the related sectors were reported. In order to develop the bench design, one of the representative items of the street furniture furthermore it was proceeded that basic process for the design like data searching for the object place and the existing case studies. On the basis of this the series of the design development processes such as idea sketch, computer rendering and drawing work were described step by step. The aim of this study is therefore to contribute in compiling the development processes of bench design as a new shape into a data and in utilizing it as a design case study and research material in the related sectors.

I would like to design a customized furniture for one-person households that have emerged as mainstream in modern society. In particular, I focused on the tendency of generations to improve the quality of life, and wanted to design the aesthetic furniture close to art furniture. To this end, I look at art furniture in domestic and overseas furniture. and present the concept of combined custom design based on current trends. The combined custom design differs from the existing one by creating separate designs for each part and fusing them to enable more diverse and aggressive molding. This is in harmony with the active tendency of one-person households who shows a lot of interest in the quality of life. Especially, it is suitable for small quantity production of various kinds, so it can be produced in the existing craft workshop system, and the two tables can confirm the possibility of the morphological concept according to actual combined custom design.

Postmodernism has blurred the line between design and art. We would like to suggest a design case that took diversity in the modern era that harmonizes functionality and shape of the top board of a furniture and trend of the role of furniture and objet into consideration. This study aims to project a new role into space via convergence of objet that has aesthetic function and furniture design that plays practical role in space. Thus, furniture design attempts to combine ceramic and carpentry and demonstrate the value and potential the combination possesses. By creating a distinct design from previous furniture that had visual limitations with ceramic bridge that adopted existing piling method in ceramic design, we expect a fresh blend of furniture and space that encompasses a different sensation from color and texture of soil and glaze, unable to attain from simple wood.

Mendini works architect of magazine. He is a era-transcending designer who started design in late fifties and still works actively. In his design, there are some ordinary emotions which make people easier to approch to than without having any resistance. The purpose of this research paper is to define the traits of Mendini's design work. There are four main characters in his design; post-modernism, combination of art and design, use of contemporary art and traditionary italian colors and redesign. Mendini interpret tradition in modern way. His individuality came from the tradition, and also he modernized italian tradition to it.

Modern furniture is mostly made of panel products such as a glue-up panel, a particle board and a medium density fiberboard(MDF). Warping is a major defect of these panel products resulting in degrading final products. In this study the factors related to the warping of a glue-up panel and MDF were investigated by comparing the physical properties of warped specimens with those of the unwarped. The differences between the moisture contents measured on the both surfaces of specimens were found to mainly influence the warping of glue-up panel specimens whether conditioned or not. The average oven-dry density of warped glue-up panel specimens was definitely higher than that of the unwarped at l% significance level. For MDF the influencing factor on warping has not been revealed yet, however it was found that the conditioning reduced the number of warped specimens.
